↳the rolling hills stretched for miles, row after row of viridian flora swaying gently in the wind. that vibrant green, reminiscent of jake's eyes, contrasting against the scarlet sunset; again, like jake, those shining emeralds resting upon bloodstains. his pelt matched his personality, bright and bubbly, cheery and free-spirited. talltail had tried not to get attached, he really had; every night he spent with the other he assured himself, this is it, this is the last time, but when it came down to it he was weak, unable to push away that curious and enthusiastic gaze or that uncannily wise and intelligent demeanor. a sigh left his lips, his head drooping slightly as dread pooled in his stomach; he would face his clan soon, but talltail knew not if they would accept him. after all, he had run off, abandoned them in favor of chasing after pointless vengeance. he wondered how his mother fared, remembering how withdrawn and lifeless she had become after the death of finchkit and later sangorse, yet simultaneously he knew she must be fine without him. woolytail was her mate now, and they had three kits; she didn't need him, none of the windclan cats did. to return would be to succumb to a life of solitude and isolation.
↳but perhaps there would be no need for him to continue solo. if he was honest with himself, he felt for the other feline, a spark deep in him; he could not bear to part with the other, and so a question formed itself upon his tongue. it was a dangerous venture, an idea that filled him with trepidation, but he felt it necessary. if an effort was not made, if he simply walked off and never looked back, he knew he would never forgive himself or find it possible to continue with the guilt of letting jake go without a fight.
↳”jake,” he began, not yet facing the ginger kittypet. his breath hitched, his lungs constricting as he stumbled over his words. jake made him tongue tied, confused and disoriented with his mere presence. talltail inhaled, gulping in oxygen as if he had been lost in the desert and barely found water; a moment of silence passed before he finally turned to the other, a silent plea in his eyes, wide and truly fearful of his companion’s reaction, as he gazed into jake's eyes. “come with me, join my clan.”
↳ the slender feline looked to the other with hope in his eyes, despite the sudden unease that pierced his heart. what would he do if jake refused? if he was forced to return home alone, to never see his beloved again? for he truly felt a bond with the bright kittypet; he was so positive, optimistic, always smiling, and he listened. that was already so much more than talltail’s clanmates. sure, most of them meant well, but jake had guided him, stuck by his side no matter how perilous the journey became or how much he questioned talltail's motives. it was selfish, the tom knew, but shouldn't he be allowed a moment of selfishness? after so many moons of shrewclaw's incessant teasing, of his father's sudden death, of the sister he never even had a chance to meet—talltail had learned to forgive, to rationalize and view things from sparrow’s perspective, but that didn't mean he no longer mourned. with jake by his side, he felt he could face anything. the judgmental glances of his clanmates he would surely receive, his own insecurities; tailtail had been drowning, and jake was his lifeline. without him he would surely asphyxiate.
