zay didn’t know why, but her heart felt a bit of a clench as he spoke. she turned to look at him. “that’s good then.”. she said, nodding. “my names arzaylea. but you can call me zay.”. she said with a small smile. she was trying her best to be kind. this boy didn’t know her life, she had no right to take her anger out on him. she couldn’t judge him off of a few minutes together in a room and things her friends had said about their... wild nights together. zay looked at him, trying to come off as nice as possible. who knew? maybe the kid was really nice, just with a tough exterior.

at his words- the dark-haired girls facial features seemed to soften slightly, as if his words had made her reconsider the ways she was acting around him. yet, he knew he was being a total ass. he grew up with one, so it's only reasonable he, himself, become one, too. and a few minutes with a girl that had shown more emotion in the past few minutes then he had the past few years, he wasn't going to just give up the title being an ass had gotten him. "cool.. jay." what? he had to live up to classic 'bad-boy' standards somehow. "as you already know, i'm hunter. hunter maddox," he decided not to say his last name, but instead his middle- to avoid being compared to his father. he didn't want that, and he'd avoid all connections he could for as long as possible.

zay narrowed her eyes at his words. she knew he was messing with her, so she just brushed it off. “yeah. hunter.” she nodded. she sighed through her nose. she looked over the boy, as if she was trying to read the boys whole life story through his body posture and the way his eyes shined in the light. but she really couldn’t. he hid every emotion behind a little facade. she twisted around completely in her chair, her legs facing hunter. she wasn’t going to do anything anyways, why not just talk to the boy?

he didn't know what he was doing. one second- it was drowning his own sorrows away in the form of alcohol- the next, it was stumbling around the quiet streets, quivering hands wrapped tightly around his phone, eyes glaring at the battery- which was currently extremely low in the red zone. five percent. it's not like he could go home to charge it, and he had the red hand mark still prominent on the left side of his face evidence to prove that. but, it's not like he exactly wanted to go home, either.

the longer he stared at the bright screen, the lower the battery got. "y'know, you're useless-" he then muttered into thin air, "dear old dad was right, you don't belong." while it may of been his drunken self muttering away, he knew the words were true. they had to of been. the small tremble in his hands still hadn't stopped, not when he downed his first shot- not when he downed his second, and not when he was stumbling out of the damn place.

finally, he reached the point where he built up enough confidence to use his remaining three percent to call the contact his phone had been opened to for the past twenty minutes- a number with no previous records of calls before it. arzaylea.

arzaylea was working on a project for science, glue all over her hands and glitter in her hair. she was in the middle of gluing down a photo of a plant when her phone started to ring. she looked at the contact name and couldn’t help but to raise her eyebrows. it was hunter. over the past few months, her and hunter had become extremely close. to the point she would eat detention on purpose just to have more time to be with him. and set down the glue and the photo, pressing the green phone button to answer the call. she put it up to her ear, clearing her throat. “hey, hunter. what’s up?”. she asked. it was pretty late at night, and she could hear the sounds of cars going down the street. she listened intently for an answer.

he knew it wouldn't take long for her to pick up, because if there's something he'd learnt from knowing her the past few months- it'd definitely be that she never went anywhere without her phone, and in this situation, he was actually kind of glad for it. she was first to speak- and he was almost hesitant to answer. "do you think anyone would miss me if i disappeared?" he suddenly spoke quietly, voice laced with a tone he'd never even heard himself speak with before. vulnerability. it was then a wash of guilt flooded over him- why was he burdening her with his problem? he'd already ruined one life, hadn't he? he wasn't about to ruin hers. "um- s-sorry- i gotta go."

zay’s eyes watered at the words that came out of his mouth. they sounded broken and hurt. like hunter had finally been broken to a point where he couldn’t return. he was drunk to make matters worse. and she was terrified now. she was scared she was going to lose him. “hunter no!” she yelled into the phone, standing up and throwing a jacket and shoes on as she grabbed her car keys. “do not hang up. where are you right now?”. she asked, her voice full of worry.

his voice was trembling almost as much as his hands. he couldn't help but wonder why she actually cared for him- or if she even did at all. maybe it was all an act? his father had said no one would ever love him- was he right? definitely. he hadn't done anything worth loving- or even so much as liking. so why the hell did she care? it didn't make sense. his words were slurred when he finally managed to get them out- cracking almost every second. "i don't even get why you care." he gave a lazy chuckle at this. "but, because i like you or whatever- near that big- light up casino building? you know that place? i don't know what it's called, but man, their drinks are golden! anyways, it says raith street on this sign." not even ten seconds after he told her his location- the line went flat, an obvious sign his phone had given up on him.

almost screaming out of rage- he threw his good for nothing phone to the ground, watching it shatter into millions of pieces, when he could finally feel the tears streaming down his face at a rapid speed.

zay heard him tell his location, then the line went dead. she ran down the stairs and out her front door, hopping into her car. she barely let it start before she was speeding out of the driveway. she didn’t expect anyone to pull her over or to be in her way. it was almost three in the morning. she held back tears as she sped to the spot where her best friend was, saying silent prayers that he was okay. she didn’t know what she would do if he wasn’t. he was her only true friend. she got to raith street, she came to a speeding stop. she only put the car into park before she hopped out. she saw hunter and ran over to him, wrapping her arms around him tightly. she knew he was crying, and at this point so was she. she didn’t say anything. she just held him in her arms.
