✴Phlegethon✴Basil rested fitfully for hours, waking to a pitch room. For a while he just lay there, wishing for the oblivion of sleep to come back to him. It was a fruitless effort, though, and he soon crawled out of the bed and silently snaked his way into the hall. Everything was dim and quiet, save for the crackling fire. In the living area the fireplace was alive with light, the whole room warm and inviting. Small things had been left out for them. Pilfering through the food he took some of the bread and goat cheese for himself. He still didn't have much of a stomach for anything. He had felt sick and drained for days, and the walking and weather hadn't helped. Sitting on the hearth he drew his feet up, letting the warm stones bring some relief.
Why help them? Why even bother? No good deed goes unpunished. His thoughts troubled him. His instincts told him that he was doing the right thing. It was such a primal urge that at first there was little hesitation. Now, with time to give it thought, it was feeling more and more like a mistake. His eyes drifted towards the entrance. It would be so easy to slip away into the night. To leave and go far from all the trouble he had gotten dragged into for his entire life. He could run to the ends of the earth. No one would come after a worthless rat. He knew there were places he would thrive.
He only sighed, resting his head on the wall.

✴Phlegethon✴The creaking of a floorboard clued Basil in that someone else was awake. Eventually he watched Ulicia walk into the room. It amused him. She looked so out of place. Somewhat pulled from his self-deprecating vigil he called out softly from his fireside perch. "Good morning."

||Seraphine|| "Oh, thank you." she walked over to the food and drinks and grabbed a few things before joining Basil by the fire. "So what are you doing up at this time? I would have imagined after all the traveling we did you would have been as exhausted as I am. I'm probably going to crash again as soon as I'm finished here."

✴Phlegethon✴"I have never been good at sleeping," he said, leaning his head back onto the stones. "I ache. Everything hurts. I have hardly recovered from my near death experience. Travelling for days in harsh weather hasn't helped either. I just feel sick and troubled." It was an honest admittance for once, and his tone reflected it.

||Seraphine|| "I see. Back home the witchdoctor used to have concoctions for that. I picked up a thing or two from him just by watching. Sadly I don't think I learned the way to make the sleeping medicine, but I do know something that may be able to help with the pain. I just need a few extra ingredients. Would your mother have any herbs growing by some chance?"
