Mary gave a nod as she watched them leave. She figured she'd give David a chance; she cared just as much for Alessa as David did. Alessa walked with David, relieved that she got some time to relax at home.

[LilacSky]

David could hardly believe it. He had thought Mary hated him, or disliked him at least. Was she doing this out of pity? Did she know David liked her? Okay, that was obvious. But he’d been trying so hard to hide it. He set his clock to three in the car, and they started driving home.

[Boomer]

Alessa got in the backseat and buckled herself in. She held onto Scarlett as she was silent the whole time. She hoped that David wasn't mad at her.

[LilacSky]

“Alessa...” David said. “We need to talk about what happened in there.”

[Boomer]

Alessa's ears drooped as she looked down at the floorboard. It was clear that she felt guilty about what happened.

[LilacSky]

“I know you hate shots, but we all have to do things we don’t like. All you did today was prolong the inevitable. You’ll have to take the injections later.”

[Boomer]

Alessa gave a nod, understanding the situation. "I'm sorry..." she whispered, still not looking up. She truly was sorry about her behavior; part of her was worried about if she was going to be punished. Alessa would've never acted in the way she did if she had been with her mother; any sort of resistance or usage of her power meant a beating.

“Thank you. Please just try to bear through getting the injections. They might not be as bad as you remember. We have to try new things. Okay?”

[Boomer]

Alessa's chest rattled as she took a nervous breath. She simply nodded, not wanting to argue with David. As they got closer to home, she thought about working on her story's illustrations.

David remembered his deadline and Alessa’s story as well. “Hey, are you going to start illustrating your book?” he asked, trying to get her mind off of it.
