[Boomer]

Alessa brought the clothes out to the car, setting them next to her. She buckled herself in and looked out the window as they headed to school. The pup hoped that today would be an easy day.

Chrys dropped the clothes off at home and drove Alessa to school. "Have a great day, sweetie!" she said as she drove off.

[Boomer]

Alessa grabbed Scarlett and her knapsack before getting out of the car. She waved to Chrys before going into the building. She made it to class a few minutes early, so she put away her things and sat with Scarlett.

Chrys and Henry relaxed at home after dropping Alessa off.

Meanwhile, a nurse came into David's room. "Mr. Clark? We heard the swelling has gone down, so you're going to try to walk, alright?" she said.

[Boomer]

Alessa quietly talked to Scarlett until the other kids showed up. She went silent as the others took their seats.

Mary blankly stared at the TV in her room. She didn't normally like to sit and do nothing, so this was maddening her. She sighed some as she flipped through the channels. "How does Maria do this all the time?" she mumbled.

David heard Mary's voice; she wasn't that far away. "Mary!" he said. He had a reason to try and walk.
The nurse flipped his comforter and bedsheet back. She moved David, so he didn't feel any pain yet. She positioned him so his feet were just above the ground. "Go slow and be gentle, Mr. Clark," the nurse said.
"Just call me David," David groaned. Not even Aurora called him Mr. Clark. And he felt like he didn't deserve the title.
David wiggled his backside, not his legs, and his feet touched the ground. Instantly a sharp pain went up both legs. He yelped.
"Mr. Clark, are you alright?" the nurse cried.
David felt himself start to black out again. "Yes!" he groaned. He had to make it to Mary. He fell forward, landing on his hands and knees, bruising his arms severely. He started crawling.
"David Clark, this is not walking. Get back into bed before you hurt yourself."
David's knees were working a bit, just not his feet and shins. He climbed like a newborn pup, surprised at how easy it was. The pain lingered which was why there was black at the edges of his vision. The nurse followed quietly, confused and not knowing what to do.
David was sweating by the time he reached Mary's room. He saw her and propped himself up on her bed. As he stood, his legs began throbbing even worse. Biting back a scream, he hugged Maria, gave her a kiss on the cheek, scooted her over slightly, and flopped facedown onto her bed. Instead of looking like he passed out like last time he scared Alessa, this time he just looked tired and his sleeping sounds were normal and healthy-sounding. With his legs on the bed he slept soundly. And he had made it to Mary.

[Boomer]

Mary pricked her ears as she heard noises coming from the hallway. She turned to see David crawling around like an infant pup. "What in the hell are you doing?!" she barked, furious that someone allowed him out of bed. It was clear that he needed more time resting and he wasn't totally normal. Even with him standing, his stance was still off. She wasn't all that happy with having to share a bed, especially with her back acting up from the crash. A previous childhood incident had caused one of her discs in her back to pinch on her spine, causing pain if she exercised too much or do too much lifting. Mary had always hid the pain, as her fear of going under the knife was intense. Her back twitched and a spasm of pain shot through her. No longer able to hide the pain, she whimpered softly and tears streamed down her face.

"Mr. Clark!" a new nurse said angrily. The one that had been watching David had called her for help. She was new and didn't know what to do.
The new nurse picked David's body up and made more room for Mary. "I'm so sorry, Miss Mary. I know it hurts. Let me get you some more morphine." She adjusted everything for Mary's liking, then carried David back to his bed. "He wasn't supposed to walk yet! Who told that new nurse he could?" the nurse muttered angrily as she fixed everything.

Mary took a deep breath as she looked to the ceiling. "I'll be okay... please, take your time." she said softly. She wasn't being sarcastic at all. She knew that she needed to do something about her back problem; how would she be in a year or two from now? Although it frightened her, she made the decision to speak with a surgeon, once she talked to Maria and David about it.

When David woke up, he instantly wanted to go back to sleep. He was constantly either drowning in morphine or dying from pain. Right now it was the latter. He wanted to apologize to Mary. He spoke to the nurse about it.
