kalani trudged past the snow towards the diner. there wasn’t much of a point keeping most restaurants open in the winter since everyone couldn’t bear leaving a heated home to go out into the freezing cold. but skyline diner was the most popular restaurant in briarwood, and a regular teenage hangout spot as well. school was canceled because of the snow, so kalani headed straight to the diner. a few extra bucks meant a lot, especially towards her college funds. perhaps if she took a gap year and then found a well paying job...she could earn enough. she saw her little sister, kenzie, laughing with her friends and making a snowman. the scene warmed her heart. her sister fit in so well in her school but she didn't seem to mind about money, or at least she hid it very well. she was so understanding, and always shook it off with a smile and a hug when guilty kalani couldn't buy anything for her birthday. it was so strange how her sister handled their financial business better than kalani did herself.

kalani sighed as she twisted the key in the keyhole. another day of waiting tables. most of the employees were on their christmas break to exotic places like hawaii or europe. kalani yearned for the day she could leave this miserable town. the dishes from the day before hadn’t been washed. she stared at them, a heap of the mess that she hadn’t made, yet still had to clean up. life was unfair. so, so unfair. no, kalani! a little voice in her head hissed. stay positive! the diner opened in fifteen minutes and she just had to clean the whole restaurant. no problem...

alex stared out the window of the train. the snow was so thick that he could only see the fog his breath was making on the window. he couldn’t believe what had happened to him in the past few weeks. so what if he hooked up with another girl? tiana moore was an absolute pain in the behind. and skylar o’brien was so much more attractive-and he prefered models over singers anyways. he winked at the girl gawking at him from the seat across from the train, but when he turned back to the window, he rolled his eyes. being famous was hard sometimes. all the girls seemed to want him. but he supposed that was nice, usually.

the train jerked to a stop and alex peered out the window, trying to get a glimpse of the town. he had lived here until he was fourteen-right before he started high school, and then he left for LA. it was strange being back. his manager insisted he finish off his senior year in public school. public school! he fingered the key to his new apartment. oh, how he wished to go back to his beach house in malibu, or his mansion in beverly hills, or his penthouse in manhattan.

he stepped out of the train and took in the view. wait, there was no view. it was just...plain old houses, some trees...an ordinary town. with a sigh, he dragged his suitcases to his apartment. he didn’t even need a car-the town was so small you could probably cross the whole thing walking in about thirty minutes. but he did find a shiny black bmw waiting in the apartment garage. his face lit up. the thing about being famous was that he was always being driven around in a limo. he hadn’t driven in years. he decided to take his new baby out for a spin when he noticed the ground around him was all snow. great.

after sitting in his empty bedroom for ten minutes, alex was starting to get twitchy. he was usually always doing something-partying, recording, with his friends...he put on his shoes and went out for a walk. the freezing cold was better than that plain apartment. he noticed a lit up diner among the cloudy sky and watched in the direction. it was six forty five in the morning, but there were already people outside. he had to admit, the community seemed very friendly. he opened the door.
