marcella just shook her head. “don’t be. it was a wake-up call.” she shrugged, continuing to frost her cake. “i guess.” she shrugged, looking at river. “damaged my self-esteem more, but who cares at this point?”

river slowly nodded, his head falling back with a quiet groan at her last words. "how did it damage your self-esteem more?" he inquired, resting his forearms on the counter. "i mean, you were aware what you were doing to those guys, weren't you?"

marcella nodded. “it makes me aware of how much of a terrible person i am, which is me damaging my self-esteem. it was never really that big to begin with. at school i’m a totally different persom, y’know, playing with hearts and things is an alter-ego, like a crust for me.” she paused. “at school i’m an ultra confident queen... but...” she sighed

river listened to marcella, opening the fridge and pulling out some apple juice. "but.." he urged, pouring the juice and glancing over at the girl. he had a feeling he knew what she was going to say, but he kept quiet for now.

marcella shook her head. “i’m not. i’m just some screwed up kid who has daddy issues and low self esteem.” she shrugged and put her cake on the counter.

river hummed, bringing the cup to his lips and drinking some juice before lowering it. "alright, i'm gonna pretend i'm some therapist." he declared, taking a seat. "i think that you do that to those guys because deep down, you want someone to feel the pain of losing that love like you did. i think that you push people away, because you're afraid of love, when really you probably need it the most right now."

marcella looked down, before looking at river with pain in her eyes. “you’re... completely right.” she said quietly, running a hand through her hair. she blinked back tears, before sighing.

river pursed his lips at her response, nodding his head. "it's okay to want someone, y'know." he murmured, finishing off his juice. "you don't need to be this tough chick all the time." river added, placing his cup in the dishwasher.

marcella nodded quietly. “but there’s nobody to want in school. the boys are complete douches to the girls.” she told river quietly. she knew these things all along, like how she remembered her mother’s screaming and the blood on the knife, her father’s angry face, not payong attention as she escaped. she sighed.

river shrugged his shoulders. "you'll find someone. maybe just don't push him away, though." he winked with a slight smirk, turning his head as the doorbell rang. moving to the door, he pulled out some cash, opening it and handing it to the pizza dude before taking the boxes. after signing, he shut the door and placed the pizzas on the table. "pizza's here!" he announced.
