"Let's explore!" Reis had been sitting on the windowseat, but now leapt to his feet.
[ Meanwhile, down the hallway... ]
"Are you certain this is a good idea?" Khave was glancing over the written proposal on the table before him. After reading it for the tenth time, he regarded the visiting king with a frown. "They are so young, Aris. I fear that the damages may outweigh the benefits. A kidnapping could be deeply traumatizing." He expressed his concern, leaning back in his chair to listen as Aris gave his reply.
"Nonsense, Khave-" Aris waved a hand. "Reis is ten; practically a young man. And Neveah is a year before him. I believe they are old enough to handle it."
"It is not a matter of age, my friend." Khave shook his head. "We must consider the children's maturity in this matter. At what age must they be expected to handle such weighty emotion and trauma?"
"They are no longer children." Aris' reply was quick. "And they are royals. If they are to rise in the world of the nobles, they must be well prepared. They must be exposed to the dangers and risks of the royal blood inside them."
"Neveah and Reis are no strangers to the darkness of the real world." Khave reasoned. "But this..." He motioned to the plans for the staged kidnapping. "This is madness."
"I do not believe you are seeing my point, Khave." Aris leaned forward, searching the other man's eyes with his own. "Reis is ready for this. He will be stronger for it. However, if you think that Neveah is too delicate..." He put up his hands. "I suppose we can call it off. Not all of us are hearty enough to withstand the pressures of this dangerous life."
"That is not what I am saying." Khave replied, and Aris cut him off before he could continue.
"Then what is your excuse? We have the chance to preserve our legacy here, Khave. To increase the strength of our heirs. How can you turn that down?"
Shaking his head once more, Khave gave Aris a faint smile.
"You're not going to give up on this idea, are you?"
"Have you ever known me to quit anything, Khave?" Aris chuckled. Sighing heavily, Khave nodded.
"Very well. It will be done, as you wish."
“So you really are a princess.” Maverick's eyes burned both with anger and hurt. "When were you planning to tell me; before or after I got killed trying to protect you?”
