joby was in the hospital after a really bad accident, which hadn't been his fault, and he was just told he had amnesia. it had some fancy name and explanation, but he couldn't remember. basically, all his memories from before the accident were gone. it was the most shocking news he'd ever received. well, he didn't know for sure, because he couldn't remember any other shocking news. the nurses had told him he didn't have any family, so they'd called who they assumed was his girlfriend. he didn't expect he'd have a girlfriend, and he couldn't imagine how awkward it was going to be. he cursed silently and tried to sit up, but the sharp pain in his head and ribs made him gasp and collapse back into the bed. sighing, joby closed his eyes, waiting nervously. what would he do if he ended up not having anyone? he would have to start his whole life over.

after madeline got the news about the accident, she immediately stopped what she was doing. the oil painting that she was working on prior to the call was left unfinished, with a huge red stripe across the center from nearly dropping the brush. she quickly grabbed her purse, phone still in hand, as she dashed out the door, and slid into the driver's seat. the doctors spared her the details of the accident, rather they said her boyfriend was in the hospital after a major head injury, so she didn't know what to expect. once there, madeline pushed through the double doors of the hospital entrance, eyes darting around to find the nearest person with a white lab coat. "miss steelsmith?" one of them finally spoke up, his head raised from a clipboard in his hands. she nearly choked on her words. "yes, yes, that's me," she replied, her voice cracking as she tried to retain her moment of shock. the doctor's face was grim. "follow me, please." madeline didn't hesitate to fall in the man's footsteps, her arms folded over her chest as the nauseating stench of rubbing alcohol filled her nose, along with a few other steril smells. "i'm dr. wright, joby's doctor?" he said amid the silence, his tone of voice sounding more like a question. madeline didn't reply, and nodded in place. once they reached joby's room, dr. wright paused, turning to madeline as a small sigh escaped his lips. "before we go in, i don't want you to be alarmed. while he did manage to survive a fatal head injury, his memories will be.. blurred." the doctor's words put the poor woman from little to no ease at all, as he opened the door. madeline tried to hide the anxiety and sheer concern in her features, rather to stay calm, for joby, just to offer a bit of reassurance. the doctor had left by the time she made it to his bedside, a weak smile spreading across her lips.

joby was busy worrying about what would happen next, when he heard voices outside his room. he opened his eyes, blinking slowly. was she here? his girlfriend, supposedly? finally, the door opened, and he looked up curiously. a woman about his age, but very pretty, entered and approached him. he swallowed, suddenly feeling very shy. h-hi. are you...? they said... they said i didn't have any family to call so they would call my girlfriend.." he spoke quietly, his voice barely audible. he was still feeling tired and weak from the dull pain and the drugs pumping into him. whoever this girl was, he needed her. she was probably the only person who knew who he was and what happened to his family, and pretty much everything about him. he hoped, anyway. "i'm really sorry if i worried you. i just.. don't remember who you are.." joby felt bad, for himself and for her. he just hoped she would help him.

madeline's lower lip quivered at his words. he really didn't remember anything, did he? all those times they'd spent together, the first time they kissed, their first date, and everything else that followed was just like the doctor said: a blur. something that neither madeline nor joby would ever get to relive again. all of those cherished memories, gone. and to hear him apologize for it all made her feel even worse. swallowing her grief, the woman pulled up a chair to sit beside him, her fingers intertwined over her lap as her gaze rose to his bedside, then to his face. "it's alright. the only thing you need to worry about is getting better." madeline pursed her lips. "i'm madeline steelsmith," she greeted. for once, saying her name, to joby no less, rolled strangely off her tongue.

the look on her face told joby she must've really cared about him, and he must've really cared about her. "nice to meet yo- uh, well... anyway, i'm- i suppose you already know my name.." embarrassed, he decided to close his mouth. "i should be okay. doctor said i had a few broken ribs, broken fingers, and the stitches in my head..." he added, biting his cracked lip and tasting the dried up blood. "i'm not sure when i can leave.. but... well, you'll come get me, right? i mean, i know i don't remember you, but.. i don't know anyone else, or even where i live. o-or we live." joby was unsure if they were moved in together, but either way he would need help getting home. he was pretty sure whatever car he had was completely wrecked.

hearing about joby's injuries made everything seem a bit more real, as madeline traced her thoughts over his bruised features. she contained the ultimate feeling of pity buried deep in her stomach, her fingers splayed neatly on her lap becoming a bit more restless. madeline nodded crookedly, hazel eyes dropping a few times as he listened to his words carefully. "yes, you live with me, in a small apartment a few blocks away from here," she replied. "it's small, but it's kept us by for a while. once you get checked out of here in a couple weeks i'll show you around town." for once, madeline's smile grew sincere, washed away of any remaining worry. "you always liked the park over by the town square; we can make that our first stop once you're feeling well enough."

joby listened to her, looking grateful. to him, she was like an angel. he couldn't imagine what would have happened if she didn't show up, or if he didn't have her. and her smile made him believe that maybe he'd be okay, eventually, and his life could be normal. "that sounds great. thank you, really.. i-i don't know what i would've done if i had no one. i just feel like a stranger to the whole world." he sighed shakily, rubbing at the bandages covering a long cut on his face, sure to leave a scar. he started playing with the blanket covering him, looking down at his hands. "and.. when i get out of here, will you tell me about.. me? and us? i want to know everything.."
