ink and flowers || one x one

[miss kobayashi]

ren sighs softly, waving goodbye to the customer who left with a bouquet of roses. they had come in in desperate need for an anniversary gift, something quick they could buy as they had forgotten about the day until it inevitably arrived. ren had a bouquet of roses on standby after a cancelled order, so it worked out well.

the soft ping of his phone grabbed his attention, and he read the text with a grin. 'ok!!!' he replies, then sending a short array of cartoon dog emoticons with a giggle. he moves to the back of the store, pulling out a arrangement he had been working on.

it was a thank you gift for kyo, an assortment of dailias, bluebells, and, of course, irises. he had made sure to order extra for the season.

kyo smiled at the response, chuckling at the random dog emoticons that followed. finishing up a few more things, kyo quickly reorganized his working area before rising to his feet and entering the break room. grabbing his water bottle, he exited the room, heading towards the main door of the parlor.

"i'll be back." he spoke to dee, who winked at him with a knowing look. kyo shook his head with a small grin as he exited the parlor, taking the familiar way to ren's flower shop, smiling as all of the bright and beautiful flowers came into view.

grasping the handle of the door, kyo pulled it open and stepped inside, smiling to himself as he made his way to the counter. "hey, ren." he called out, knowing the male was probably in the back at the moment.

ren had put the finishing touches on the arrangement, complete with a bow, hearing the chime of the bell at the front door that rang every time someone came in. he popped his head from the back room, giving kyo a quick wave before ducking back into the room.

seconds later, he returned from the room and walked up to kyo, his hands tucked and holding the arrangement carefully behind his back. a small, simple smile crossed his face.

" hey! " he hummed sweetly. " how was your day? "

kyo tilted his head with a slight smile was ren quickly waved before returning to the back. figuring the male was busy, kyo allowed his eyes to roam the familiar shop, observing the new flowers.

hearing footsteps, kyo turned his head, the smile on his lips returning as he saw ren. "it was pretty good so far, how about you?" he returned, before noticing ren seemed to be hiding something behind him.

"whatcha got there?" kyo questioned, his curiosity getting the best of him as he tried to casually peek behind ren to see what it was the other was hiding.

ren hums quietly in thought. " tiring. but good. like most days, I guess. " he replies, barely able to hide the surprise from kyo, even biting his lower lip to suppress an even larger smile.

he chuckles when kyo gets curious, even mirroring the actions of kyo so he couldn't see behind him. " oh, it's nothing... " the male coos teasingly. in an instant, he pulls the arrangement forward as an offering to kyo.

" i got you something! " ren says, beaming. " i know it's just flowers, and you've gotten mine before, but it's the only thing I really know how to do. annnnnnd there's a meaning. " he points to the individual flowers in the arrangement. " there's bluebells, they represent humility and gratitude, and dahlias, they represent thankfulness, oh, and I added a few irises, too. I... um... just wanted to say thanks, for what you did. "

kyo nodded his head in response as ren spoke about his day, glad that it was going well. he narrowed his eyes playfully as ren copied his movements so he couldn't see behind his back. "that's cruel." kyo declared playfully.

when the arrangement of beautiful flowers was suddenly handed out to him, a wide grin overtook kyo's face at ren's words, listening to him explaining the flowers and nodding. kyo carefully took the arrangement, setting it down on the counter safely before turning to ren.

moving towards the male, kyo immediately engulfed ren into a hug, the grin still on his lips. "i love it. thank you, ren. it's amazing, and beautiful. you're so sweet." he murmured happily, his heart swelling at the sweet gesture ren had done for him. he knew the moment would end soon, but he really didn't want it to. he loved having ren in his arms, it was so warm and comforting to him.

he giggled happily when kyo grabbed the bouquet, watching him set it on the counter. ren was relieved that kyo looked happy, he was concerned the gift would be a little cheap because it was pretty easy supplies for him on hand.

it took him a little by surprise when he was wrapped into a hug, flinching slightly in shock. after a short moment, he hugged kyo back, resting his head slightly on the male and giving a small but content sigh, shutting his eyes.

" it really wasn't any trouble. i-i mean, there's a lot of flowers here, haha. but i'm glad you liked it. " he murmurs quietly.

kyo hummed in contentment as ren returned the hug, smiling at his words. "oh! that reminds me," the male mused, reluctantly pulling away from the hug before he held onto ren for too long and made it awkward.

"do you have any roses? i just need a single one." kyo questioned with a smile, glancing back to the beautiful arrangement ren had made him, admiration shining in his blue eyes.

checking the time on his phone to make sure he wasn't late or anything, he relaxed as he realized he still had time to hang out with ren. it made his lunchtime much better.

ren pulls back slightly, rubbing his arm and looking back up at kyo with a soft grin.

disappointment flooded his chest. he needed a rose? a single rose? did kyo get back together with that other guy? there wouldn't be any other explanation. ren snapped out of his thoughts, trying desperately to hide any sense of sadness. " oh, sure. " he murmurs.

" what color do you want? there's a larger variety now. " ren moved to the rose display, tilting his head back to kyo to wait for his answer.

kyo hummed, following ren to the rose section and observing the colors. "red is fine, please." he spoke happily, pulling out the cash as he had been through this many times before.

handing it over to ren, he stepped back so the male could retrieve the rose, a small smile on his lips as he tucked his hands into his front pockets.

"so, aren't you going to that wedding, soon? you must be excited." he murmured, trying to keep the conversation going as he peered around the flower shop, humming to himself.
