he looked at sparrow gawkingly, amazed by her supreme smoothy making skills. he stood up promptly after her, clutching the slushie drink in his hand. "hmm, do you wanna walk around the trail or somethin'?" he asked, peering out the aged window at the treeline. he didn't even wait for her to agree, simply gesturing to the door he slid away. "c'mon, we're going for a walk."

he led her to one of the trails, and the two submerged themselves in foliage. it was peaceful, the trees whispered songs of the wind and birds chattered amongst themselves. "so, where do you go to school anyways?" he cocked his head to the side, taking another sip of the smoothie. the two had cranked out the general conversation. they knew the basics, but they never talked about school. it was something most teenagers tried to avoid during the summer. maybe if he knew what school she went to, he could keep in touch somehow. he knew it was a far-cry, yet he felt this upcoming school year would be a little lonely considering he wasn't easy at making friends in school. at camp, everyone was a misfit and everyone loved it. at school, everyone was a misfit and nobody liked it. it was so perverse, he could never understand it.

sparrow was trying to sneak up on a rabbit when harper asked her his question, oh, i go to school in colorado, whitewater home of the devils! she said making lil' devil horns with her fingers. why, where do you go? she asked, walking beside harper attempting to match his long strides. sparrow was doubtful that harper would be anywhere near her, but she still hoped he was. he was a good friend, and he trusted her enough to drink the smoothie she made him, which was rare. you better be close by or imma move into your basement. she joked.

he froze, turning to face her with his jaw practically to the floor. a smile plastered on his face, he looked at her in awe. "are you pulling my leg, bird?" it seemed almost unreal that he would have transferred to the school that she attended. as she made some remark about moving him into her basement, he shook his head and placed his cup on the forest floor, then put both his hands on her shoulders. "no, no, you don't get it." he said giddily. "i moved early this year, i'm transferring to whitewater. we're going to the same school!" it was almost uncanny that they would've met, and ended up also at the same school. he shook her about for a second before releasing his grip and stepping back. "finally i'll have a friend." he chimed, half-joking. part of him was completely serious, however. to have someone he already knew at school would be a godsend.

dude! no way! she said a huge grin had taken over her face, you gotta be joking! no way this could've happened, its literally like some sort of cheesy fairly tale. she joked, to excited to do much more. she threw her hands in the hair and gave harper a big ol' hug, what'd ya mean 'finally have a friend' you are one of the best people i know! she back up a few paces, but continued to yell as if he was a few yards away. dude this school year is gonna be the literal BEST. her joyful windfall was interrupted by an announcement over the camp intercoms, "all campers please report to your cabins for nightly check in, or if you have a nightly activity, please report to the dining hall. if you are caught outside your cabin after hours, you will be excluded from camp activities tomorrow. thank you, and good night." sparrow scowled, great timing. but are you signed up for any night activities? i think the options were bon fire, star gazing and star tipping? but i don't know i'll have to check again.

sparrow's arms wrapped around harper's body, embracing him in a tight hug. he placed his hands around her back, a bashful rose-tint brushing onto his cheeks at her compliment. he wouldn't consider him one of the 'best people sparrow knew' but he never felt like the unwarranted dislike towards him was fair. maybe it was his bags under his eyes, or how his hair almost matched his skin tone and he just seemed weird for bringing a blanket into class. whatever it was, students weren't fast to accept him. she backed up, as did harper as they continued to squeal and squawk at each other like raging birds. "i know! i know! I can't wait!" he folded his arms over his chest, feeling a bit interrupted by the intercom demanding the camp members head to their bunkhouses or activity areas. "great timing is right." he rolled his eyes. "i'm pretty sure i was signed up for bonfire, i'm not one for star gazing at summer camp. what about you? did you sign up for something?"

i think i was signed up for the bon fire as well! but i need to get back to my cabin to check! see you there dude! and she took off down the trail leading back to camp, waving and squawking something inaudible. on her arrival at her cabin, her lungs burned but a huge smile was plastered on her face. all her cabin mates jumped as she burst through the door, we are going to the bon fire right? she said a little to loudly, all her cabin mates hesitantly nodded. yes! she shouted and ran to the bathroom to change, yet again. it was going to be a lot colder at night, so she decided to grab this outfit, ( cuz y'know, she's basic. ). when she got out her bunk mates simultaneously taunted her about harper again, but she didn;t really care, she was to ecstatic to care honestly. c'mon guys, you take foreeever, ugghh. sparrow whined, pushing some of her cabin mates out the door. "its not like we all don't care about our appearance sparrow, god. we actually want to look better than a piece of fat trash." one of her bunk mates yelled from the bathroom. sparrow went eerily silent for a few moments, oh. ok, sorry. she said flatly, and walked outside and waited on the porch outside their cabin.

"alright, sounds good. i'll see you there!" the two parted ways once again. harper slid into his cabin to meet up with his cabin mates. while the guys goofed off and talked about girls, harper grabbed a knit blanket from his suitcase and held it in his arms. "are you guys gonna come or what?" he hissed. "yikes harper, what's got you so cranky?" "i just want a s'more, and you guys are taking a millennium to get your lives together." that, and he just couldn't wait to see sparrow again and talk about what havoc they could wreak on the school. he figured they had enough braincells to find their way to the fire alone, so harper decided to meet sparrow at her cabin.

Once harper caught sight of hee, he unfolded his blanket and wrapped it around his shoulders, then ran up to sparrow with it blowing behind him like a cape. "ooooh lady bird!" he hollered, coming up to her and wrapping his cloak around her. "what's shakin'?" he inquired, looking at her with a readiness to listen.

sparrow was just staring off into space until she heard the loud squeal of harper as he ran towards her, hey, nothin' much. she said wistfully, can we just go to the camp fire, i don't really wanna stay around here. her tone was sort of flat and melancholic, which was highly unusual for sparrows spry personality. she tightened the blanket around her shoulders and stared off into space, shaking slightly.

why do they have to be like this? why do I have to be like this? i am just a no good piece of fat trash aren't I..? she thought to herself, over and over. sparrow had always been fine with taking insults about her intelligence or other things, but when people commented on her body, she kinda shuts down. her mind just stops functioning, and she just mentally stops working. hey, uh.. harper?she said, stammering slightly, im not over weight am i?

a full one eighty. sparrow seemed dark, gloomy and sollumn. she almost begged to leave, ushering him away from the site. he didn't want to pry, guessing maybe her roommate said something stupid. they walked on, harper fell into his thoughts once more. he wondered what was going on at home, and how his sister was doing. he was close to laura, often the two would end up sleeping in the same room and hanging out all the time. her and sparrow would probably get along great, he thought. he could see it already, the two of them exchanging dark secrets about harper and painting their nails.

pulled from his string of thoughts, sparrow dug out a question from seemingly nowhere. it was so offputting, that harper stopped and turned to her, furrowing his brows. "you? no, no! what makes you ask that?" sparrow was thin, and seemed pretty fit. she certainly had better stamina and charge than he had, as he found out during a race across the camp site. "where'd that question even come from?" he spoke with a concerned tone, starting to walk a bit more. it was starting to click why she wasn't eating often.

ahh, its nothing. she said, a sad smile coming across her face, just something someon- never mind, its nothing. she cut herself off, not wanting to get her 'friends' in trouble with harper. that would probably be absolutely terrifying. she thought to herself, but smiled at the thought of harper throwing someone into a lake because he slightly offended her. she was glad that she had someone by her side for once, someone she trusted to say the least. when at last the warm glow of the fire came into view and sparrow perked up, c'mon dude! i'll race ya there! she half shouted at him and took off towards the bon fire. upon arriving, she snatched two seats close to the fire for her and harper and some marshmallows for them as well. when harper FINALLY arrived, she handed him his marshmallow and wrapped herself underneath his blanket. she stuck her marshmallow into the fire, watching it roast.


man i could get used to this. sparrow thought, and laid her head on harpers shoulder, hey dude, this school year is gonna be liiiiit. and pulled her burning marshmallow out of the fire, get it, its a fire pun. then blew out the flames quickly engulfing her marshmallow.
