Darkness came faster than Piper had expected - it was so hot out it seemed like the day would never end, but by around 5:30 the sun descended from the sky, and a crescent moon took its place. Piper had positioned herself in a office chair next to the window, where she sat staring up at Australia's vast sky. That was among her favorite things about her job, getting to see the stars from every angle. The two strangers hadn't exchanged too many words since arriving at the hotel, and she felt partially at fault. After awhile, she turned and broke the silence, her honey brown eyes looking over Jon, "Do you know anything about this artifact?" She asked mildly, her fingers crossed over her knee while she leaned back into the chair.
[sure thing, its been slow so far, time to get into plot c:<]

JONATHONxiC.
jon was seated at the kitchen table straight across from piper, textbook in hand. his fingers traced along the tiny lettering, brows creased with interest. but he looked up from his studies at hearing her comment, keeping a thumb on the page he was reading. "i'm not entirely sure," said jon, his voice reaching the level of a faint murmur. he clutched the spine of the textbook in his hands, shuffling over to piper's bedside. he plopped himself down on the edge of the mattress, pointing a finger to a black and white picture on top of the splotches of text surrounding it. "but i've picked up on a few things, and i think this is it." the picture was the shape of a tiny elephant, carved in a deep jade that wouldn't have been visible from the lack of color. "they call it the emerald ivory." jon glanced over from the book to piper, searching for any sort of interest in her gaze. "they don't have much information about it, other than its location and rarity."

"Jade elephant." Piper repeated in a distracted voice. Her brow furrowed slightly, "But, there are no elephants in Australia." Her voice was in a low, thoughtful tone. Certainly, and aboriginal artifact would be, aboriginal... Unless it was just hidden here. A narrow hand met Piper's chin while she considered the possibilities,"I've heard of animal statues all over the world, but normally the statue reflects something in the culture..." It further suggested that it was being hidden here. Maybe, an African or Asian artifact disguised as something else. Australia was full of hidden caves, like the Mulka Cave or the Jenolan. Piper was under the school of thought that places were called haunted as a rouse, to discourage people from investigating them - or to encourage them to look for something else. A disgruntled sigh came out of her throat while she thought about all the possibilities, the unanswered questions, the loose ends. "I guess we'll have to find the answers if they aren't in there." Piper was a linguist, and was proficient in culture... But when it came to tribal situations like this, speaking the language was the easy part.
