'dorian'. it felt much more familiar than mr. clarke, and bee felt inclined to address him as something more familiar. he looked to be around her age, spoke to her like a friend rather than a peer. but his words were stiffly practical, stuck to what felt like a script.

"she is an enigma. they all were. there is so much we can learn from them-" she broke off to flip the page in the folder, displaying a diagram sketch of a tooth- jagged edges in a serrated pattern, hooks on the edges as if made for catching prey. "her molars are made for a herbivorous diet, but these frontal teeth here are made for hunting- despite not being a hunting species. she scavenges, she's a flight animal-" bee realized she was getting worked up, and took a little breath. "amoretti was the smartest. he could clear an escape course in under ten seconds. nova, though, she was unique." there just weren't enough words in the world to describe the enthralling allure of the behavioral activities of her troodons. she knew she could go on forever, so she stopped, sat back, and folded her hands in her lap, meeting dorian's gaze steadily and awaiting a response.

xxxAt this point if I were a preteen I would be writing something childish about how the two of us were going to get married. But I was much too mature for that. I would have to do the right thing and ask her for lunch or coffee or something. That would be better than sitting in my office daydreaming for the remainder of the day. However some part of me figured it was a valid option, despite how silly it was. It’s not like I don’t have work to do.

xxxthere was a kind of pride that she held about the species that she had clearly spent a good chunk of her life studying. Clearly they showed signs of reflecting what modern omnivores do in today’s day and age. Which was rare for the period that they were found in. There could be potential for discovery there . I made note of this despite the page being short mostly me looking at her name and seeing How well her name would mesh with mine. Again childish thoughts that would get me nowhere in the real world. “fascinating. How long did you study these animals for?” now this was diverging from what I had been told to ask. I was genuinely curious to see how long she had with them. It might clear a few things up. But I knew one thing I knew which species I was going to recommend. Probably will get chosen because of my way up the ranking ladder.

she wasn't going to lie- he was cute. and there was something fetching about his friendly demeanor, yet still sticking to a composed and professional scripture. but she had else to focus on, and if she wanted to get nova out of there, it wasn't in her best interests to pine for an attractive interviewer. yet.

"just over two years." bee responded promptly. shorter than some of the other handlers, but then again, most of her time researching behaviorial science had been in school, and before that she'd been intent on her career path with the air force. everything had changed since then, and it was funny to think how far she'd come. and all of it would be for nothing if she failed to save nova's life. she knew she was out there, somewhere. she had to be. this couldn't all be for nothing.

"what do you do for ingen, if you don't mind my asking?" she figured it wasn't too out of line to turn the tables a bit, get to know this man and his strange choice in pens.

xxxtwo years. Shorter than the IBRIS project yet still long enough to allow attachment to grow between herself and the animals. They clearly meant a lot to her, but then again, it’s not like that trait was something that handlers were lacking. They all seemed to display some kind of need to want to be with their animals again despite the fact that they could have easily been killed by one of the carnivores on the island. It’s not that huge of a shocker. However if Beatrice seemed to be convinced that her animal had managed to survive on the island by itself, at this point I had no reason not to believe her. .

xxx i stopped almost in my tracks mid sentence as I write down a few more things when she asked me about why I was here. It would be so much easier to lie. So much easier to tell her some kind of fabricated story about how coincidentally I managed to get this job. But it was so much more than just that. I cleared my throat and sat up a little trying to clear my head enough to answer the question fully. ”I am currently surdying under Doctor Henry Wu in the area of genetic engineering.” I said. Not st all a lie, but to not like it contained the full truth. The truth I was unwilling to share with anyone.

genetic engineering- something bee had no experience in whatsoever. she had taken a single course in biology, but never learned much past the basics. "that's pretty cool," she mumbled, not really paying attention to word choice. though 'cool' was probably not as impressive and impressionable as a myriad of words her vocabulary was probably capable of, 'cool' just about covered what she thought of the subject. beyond her comprehension as a handler, but interesting nonetheless.

"don't you think, as a genetic engineer student, it'd be useful to examine the genetic properties of flight creatures as well as the aggressiveness of the carnivores?" she blinked back up to stare at him, one last try at saving nova. if nothing else, she could at least leave him thinking. bee moved to stand, grabbing her folder and slipping it back into the messenger bag before slinging it over her shoulder. "why do you use that pen?" she spoke then, once more without really thinking, gesturing vaguely at his fountain pen. as soon as she realized she had spoken that aloud, bee regretted it. she surely looked an idiot, now, if not before.

xxxmost asked me some kind of question about building the perfect creature or something up that I’ll. However she had responded with a sentence. That it was cool. I suppose there was a first time for everything including a response to what I have been training my entire life to do. This also gave me one less time to explain the creature that we had in a holding pen in the lower levels of the facility. No one else had seen him however, for both security reasons and because I didn’t want too.

xxx i allowed the question she asked to be rethorical as I knew that the answer was an obvious one. Of course I did, I wish I had been permitted to apply earlier so I could have actually worked on the island for a while. That would have been spectacular. Maybe then Kroor would be better off, myself having a better idea of how to care for him. But I think that I’ve done a pretty good job. Especially given the research from the failed IBRIS project. When she got up and asked me about my pen I carefully placed the cap back on deciding that it was now or never if I wanted to ask her to spend my break with me. “lets just say, you aren’t the only one enthusiastic about Dinosaurs.” I commented standing up as well.it is now or never. “since this interview was much too short for my liking, I finally have my first break and was wondering if you wanted to accompany me?” I asked my voice not faultering. Wow, on a roll today.

an odd response, but he had proved to be a quizzically odd person, and this made her want to get to know him all the more. so when he extended an invitation to join him on his break, bee tried to obscure the bright smile spreading across her lips. "I'd love to, dorian." perhaps it'd be in her best interest to get her mind off of nova. it was all she had thought about and focused on, and was beginning to wear at her subconscious, leaving her anxious and panicked most of the time when she thought about the troodon.

she figured she'd let dorian lead the way, tilting her head to the door. did this count as a date? or just a friendly gesture? was she reading into this too much? yes, yes she was.

xxxi crossed the small room to where he coathanger was. My jacket was very out of date but I still found it practical. For what I had heard it was my fathers, I had never seen him wear it for some reason. Maybe i was just not all that observant. It was black and mostly fashioned out of what appeared to be a faux leather. Lots had looked at it and argued weither it was real or not but never a conclusive answer. Carefully I did up the front and stepped over to where my new companion was by the door.

xxx she seemed more than eager to come with me on this outing and honestly I couldn’t be more delighted. There was something striking about her and I wanted to get to know her better. Maybe it could be considered a date but I did want to see how this went first of course. I also hoped that she would be just as impressed with my line of work as well. I decided not to talk about Kroor as I am certain she would want to meet him. Something I was unwilling to do. I walked over to the door holding it open for her. “I am glad to hear it.” I hoped that she would have some interesting questions to ask me as well. I probably enjoyed talking about myself far too much. .
