Jaxon frowned as he glanced down at the concotion bubbling inside his cauldron. That day in potions class they were making a Volubilis Potion, a challenge he had been looking forward to at the beginning of class. However he was now quiet perplexed questioning where he had gone wrong while attempting to brew the potion. He reviewed all the steps he was supposed to have followed in his head. He had heated the first mix of ingredients until the potion turned red, then green. Then he added honeywater until the liquid turned pink. The brew had then been heated again, until it had turned the proper orange color, and after that he had added the mint sprigs the potion so that it turned green. Just like it was supposed to. Heating the potion again until it turned blue had followed the previous step and then, he had added more mint sprigs as the recipe printed on the board stated to do. The potion should be have turned pink after that, but instead was fading to a deep, wine colored red. Jaxon sat there, stumped and frozen with disbelief. He never messed up a potion, or if he did he knew how to fix it and get it back on track. However, as he stood there lost in his thoughts, the potion slowly grew worse as he failed to think of how to fix it. Little did he realize that the last ingredient he had added wasn't mint springs, just another herb that had looked incredibly similar to anyone not paying articulate attention to the plant. A small, simple mistake that would have a very large consequence if not fixed soon....
(Here we go, and I'll try to do more in coming posts.)

xx As Ashton worked on his own potion, he payed no mind to any of the other students.
They were finally doing something he was confident in. The only spell that he was confident
in. He exhaled softly, adding in the last ingredient: mint sprigs. It took a moment before
turning the desired color, which frightened Ashton. But once it turned the desired color, he
was filled with relief and satisfaction. He began to gloat about his potion to the girl sitting
next to him, but as he looked in her direction he saw a Slytherin boy struggling with his.
Striking curiosity filled him; He'd never spoken to this boy, but he had never messed up a
potion the entire time Ashton had been in the same class as him. After moments of
debating where he wanted to help the boy or not, he shuffled his way over and away from
his own potion.
"Hey," the Hufflepuff boy spoke softly as he always had. His voice had never been low and
deep, commanding, or manly in any sense. But it also wasn't girly: It was just a voice. One
that suited him, to say the least. "That's not right at all," a chuckle escaped his lips after
his words. He looked at it for a moment, before realizing the boy's mistake. "Hang on," he
said, walking up to the ingredients. After retrieving mint sprig, he returned to the
Slytherin's table, "This," he smiled as he spoke, "is what you should have put in." He sat it
down, picking up the herb almost identical to it that the Slytherin had put in it, "And this,"
he waved it around a bit, "is what you did put in."
Picking up the mint sprig, he plopped it into the boy's potion. It faded from its red color
to the color to indicate it had been done correctly. Typically, you wouldn't need to add as
much as Ashton did to the boys, but since he made a mistake he needed something to
cancel it out of sorts.
Smiling softly, dimples showing, the Hufflepuff welcomed him. "You're welcome," he said
in a say-so voice after getting no thanks. "Can't make a potion, can't say thank you." He
giggled after, his giggle filling the thin air around them. He started back to his table,
ready for whatever would come next.
‣‣‣ sorry if this is a bit long!!!

Jaxon looked up at the sound of someone greeting him and quickly recognized one of the hufflepuff boys in his year and class. He also vaguely recognized the other wizard from quidditch games, but that wasn't relevant to what was going on right then. He frowned and raised an eyebrow as the other stated something about his potion not being correct. Well of course it wasn't, or else the slytherin wouldn't be sitting there with a red colored potion. He would have completed his by now and turned a sample of it in if the potion had been.
He frowned as the other seemed to recognize the problem and then went to fetch some ingredients. He came back with mint sprigs and Jaxon frowned. He already had some of those. His frown didn’t disappear as the other clarified how some of the herbs he’d used hadn’t actually been mint sprigs and he took the look alike and inspected it closely. He couldn’t believe he’d made such a stupid mistake. How had the look alike herb gotten in with the mint sprigs he’d used the first time anyways? He shook his head like it didn’t matter, because it didn’t anymore. The mistake had been made already.
As soon as the potion began to change color and lighten, Jaxon was hovering over and fussing with it, making sure it was as close to perfect as he could get it. He was entirely focused on the task and seemed almost annoyed as he glanced up as the hufflepuff spoke again. He frowned and tilted his head at the other’s giggled comment, watching as the boy went and sat back down before shaking his head and returning his attention to his potion. Once he was sure it was as good as it was going to get with his little screw up, he started putting a sample of it into a vial so he could turn it in.
(oh, no, you're perfectly fine!)

Hurrying to the front with his sample in hand, Ashton checked the time. It was nearly time for them to be let out. And although he hadn’t had a particularly bad time in that class, potions was by far his least favorite class. That day’s potion was the only one he knew how to do, in all honesty. Usually, he was the one making silly mistakes and having things blow up right in his face.
He placed his sample in its respected spot before scurrying back to his seat, nearly bumping into the Slytherin he’d helped early. That would’ve been bad.
Their professor spoke a bit until it was time for them to leave. Ashton just had to talk to the boy he’d helped today, and his Hufflepuff nature wasn’t opposing that idea. He loved talking to anyone and everyone!
Standing up, he rushed over to the Slytherin. “So,” he smiled, “What happened today? You’re usually great in this class. Sometimes I even catch you giving me dirty looks anytime I mess up.” He knew considering this boy’s Slytherin nature he could agitate him, but he didn’t mind. He’d been yelled at his fair share of times by someone in every Hogwarts house, including his own.

Jaxon had finished pouring a vial of the potion and was taking it up when the hufflepuff boy from earlier almost bumped into him. The slytherin frowned but didn't say a word as he continued to the front of the front to turn in his sample. He went back and began cleaning up his table as he waited for class to end, taking care to separate the mint sprigs and their lookalikes before putting them away properly so some poor fool wouldn't mix them up like he had.
He had returned to his now clean table and was now putting away his book and personal supplies when somebody came over and began speaking to him. He looked up to see it was the hufflepuff from earlier. He frowned deeply as the other pointed out how he'd messed up and rolled his eyes as the other mentioned how he was usually the one to mess the potions up. "That was a stupid mistake I shouldn't have made on my part. Somebody obviously got the ingredients mixed up at some point, but i should have double checked to make sure they were the proper ingredients. It was a first year mistake that shouldn't have happened. As for when you mess up potions....... it's either because you get to worked up while doing them so you screw them up, or you don't pay close enough attention so you screw them up. Or sometimes both. You just need to relax and pay attention and they might now be so horrendous," he answered truthfully. Why should he sugarcoat it at all...?

The Hufflepuff scanned the other’s body, semi-intimidated in his presence. He frowned slightly as the Slytherin brought up why and how Ashton failed. How often he failed. His frown grew, “Horrendous? I’ll have you know, I think I’m doing great! I’m trying my best, and that’s all that matters,” a smile spread across his lips as he spoke gently.
“Well,” he smiled, shrugging his shoulders ever so slightly, “At least I wasn’t the one to do horrendous today.” he smiled once more, this time cockily, “Don’t blame your mistakes on others.”

Jaxon frowned as the other tried to say he was doing great. Pretty much failing class was doing great? Jaxon didn't think so...... Being the best was doing great, and if 'doing your best' didn't make you the best out of everyone else, then you had to do more, give more than just your best. You had to be perfect to be the best and greatest. It was this ambitious kind of mindset that made Jaxon a Slytherin. And it was something he took a lot of pride in.
His thoughts were cut short though as the other pointed out his mistake yet again. He scowled even more, but for some reason didn't snap at or jinx the other like he might have with anyone else. Didn't even point out that he had specifically said it was his fault for making the stupid mistake. Just rolled his eyes, huffed, and looked away to check and see if anything else might need cleaned up.
