forty-twoHad Brooks stayed in the city with his friends and new school he wouldn't have been as happy as he was at the beach. Even without college he still has friends and a new opportunity right here: a small sandy town, where if you don't know everybody's name then you'll learn at least half of them after just one day. Though he didn't always have these views, frankly, he wanted to leave the town as soon as he graduated from high school. After being crowded with no new faces in his life he thought college was a good escape. Little did he know that he would get homesick only after a week. Calling his mama everyday soothed it, but it wasn't the same as the freedom he felt as he walked along the smooth ocean waves, letting the water touch his bare feet as he stared into what seemed like nothing. He still had his studies to distract him, which he really did enjoy but it was still enough to annoy him. He would've escaped and gone down to the sand, nonetheless, he would only be greeted by pavement if he left his apartment.
forty-twoAnd when he finally came back and told his parents that he was taking a gap year before pursuing his career, the poor boy was bedridden. Not because he was sick, the only cause of it was his mother. She was the first one in her family to go to college, including Fish's father who didn't care for an education. Maybe this was what inspired her to yank her eldest son's collar and drag him towards his old bedroom and say, "keep looking at that ocean 'til you're tired of it!" The boy looked out of his bedroom window until his mother finally came in and asked him to come eat dinner, a special gumbo that she knew was his favorite. His mother was a smart woman and knew one day he'll go back, she would have to at least treasure the time he wants to spend at home. She also knew that her son would never feel tired from looking out into the sea.
forty-twoBrooks now worked at a place called Tom's Raw Bar, a dog-friendly restaurant that's outside bar is bigger than the one inside. He loved the place because it had a nice view of the ocean, though the gnats during the evening really killed him which is why his shifts normally weren't around that time. After working his regular lunch shift he decided to go out on a little excursion, something he found himself doing regularly. Fish knew the lands quite well, just like any other local of the town. Because of this he could've taken a long difficult trail and walk it as his quick as he could, but God, shifts are tiring. He finally picked a short and easy trail that was only one hour long. Fish still decided to take it slow and enjoy the almost bare greenery around him. After a while he noticed someone, and the back of their head couldn't tell him who they were.
forty-twoFish tilted his head and started to walk their way. Once he was close enough he stopped and thought to himself, the boy had some familiarity to him but he still couldn't put his finger on it. Well, it had been long enough, he was afraid the person had caught on and was thinking he was some creep. "Hm, excuse me?" he asked while grabbing his hand around a near tree and swinging around it to propel himself towards the boy who he had chased for awhile now. He stumbled forward clumsily and smiled. "It's hard to greet a new face around these parts. Who might you be?"

jalal had never felt this cornered in his life before. never. every second he spent was budgeted, accounted for, and dedicated to something, but there was never any particular schedule. sometimes he would catch up on sleep during the early morning, bleeding into the midday sun, and other days would be from four to ten in the evening. the bags under his eyes gained weight as jalal crammed more and more into them, not noticing their truly meager depths. there wasn't a pattern to get used to, and in the beginning, that was appealing. his iranian parents did raise him to work hard, but even they worried he overworked himself to collapse.
he tried to keep it hidden from those he knew - they seemed to understand his limits better than he did. jal resented that fact, feeling weak and out-of-touch with his very own body; it only riled things up. but his parents still saw it once they figured out how to use the video chats, and their distraught expressions finally convinced him to take a break. their solution was a simply vacation out of the state, a small town on the other end of the country, with access to a beach as well as excellent hiking trails. he'd scoffed, but bought the tickets anyways.
he'd landed about four hours ago, and promptly spent two just lazing about his rented condo. it was small, but it whispered spacious with the way it was organized and even that was welcoming compared to his cramped and shared apartment. jal dumped his two and a half suitcases over in one corner as to not disturb the seemingly untouchable emptiness. whereas he'd dreamed of being among the stars before, now he could meditate in the light years between them and bask in the vast nothingness.
after some time, he dragged himself to the local hiking trail, hoping to find the easiest path possibly. in his insomniac state, he probably wouldn't get far. somehow, his pleading was answered with a small but fairly pretty path, accompanied by endless oaks, shrubbery, flowers, and so much more foliage. jalal hadn't seen this much greenery in the past five years, and it was so vibrantly soft, it lifted his mood slightly.
there were hardly any people around, but he paid little to no attention to the fact until someone had swung into his peripherals from behind a tree. the figure sharpened into a guy around his age, maybe younger, and he stumbled forwards. jal felt a small smirk involuntarily tug his face while deja vu tugged at his brain. something seemed so natural about the way this guy just appeared; it was odd but not out of the ordinary.
"oh, yeah, i'm just stopping by this town for a little bit to clear my head, college's been stressful," a slightly awkward laugh, "but uh, call me jasper. you?"

42 ;)"I'd like to say I'm in the same situation, Jasper," Fish chuckled. Of course, he had been clearing his head for about two years now. Fish almost chuckled again at the thought of that. He lazily leaned against the tree he once swung around before and crossed his arms. When he turned his head to get a closer look at Jasper it made him smile, it was almost satisfying to see such a new face at the town. Well, the recent stranger did look a good bit familiar and his name only made Brooks think more. He might've seen him walk by during his college days, he did like to think he had a good memory. And what a small world if so.
42 ;)His pondering must've clouded his train of thought because he found himself with a small "oh" planted across his face. "Sorry—I'm Brooks, though people call me Fish." He scratched the back of his head and an even bigger smile started to form. He had finally found it, stored in the back of his mind for who knows how long. "Jasper... You know Mary Alston's right?" he asked softly.
42 ;)Fish's childhood was something he didn't think much of, but he remembered Jasper because he was one of his only friends to move away. Both of their moms were work buddies so the two did spend a good amount of time together for a while. And when they had left and when Fish's mother took business trips more often than she did now she would mention visiting them. Brooks started to wonder how long it had been since they had seen each other, he was also hesitant if this was the right Jasper.

the other guy - he'd hopefully introduce himself soon - leaned against the tree, crossing his arms. he seemed at ease, completely calm, but that only threw jalal off. who was this dude? why was he so familiar? it seemed to be so close, so familiar, yet jal was unable to reach into that gloomy depth, beneath which the memory glimmered and glittered and snickered, beyond his grasp. it was like forgetting your age - it seemed impossible to forget it, and yet he hesitated so many times before to think about it and count the years. it wasn't the face as much as it was the mannerisms and voice, for some reason. he'd heard it before, it seemed to him. but from where?
a few seemingly awkward moments passed, and then the other seemed to realize he hadn't introduced himself yet. this was easily remedied; the other identified as brooks, or fish, which seemed to be a nickname. it was oddly specific - jalal wondered if it was an incident or a shortened name that gave brooks his nickname. the chortle in the abyss echoed louder. not many people were named fish - why did it seem all too difficult to put an explanation behind his eerie familiarity?
brooks seemed to grin, and jal's brows furrowed. mary alston. mary alston? he stood in an awkward stupor for a moment before his brows went upward and nearly ran into one another. "are... you serious..?" he stopped. "fish alston? would a, uh, jalal sound familiar to you then?" he usually stuck to the americanized name for people who didn't quite know him enough or for those who struggled with the name. surely his childhood friend would recognize it, at least?
well at least it all started to make a little more sense. jalal had moved away at least a decade ago, but somehow now the face seemed to be exactly the explanation that matched the faces in that deep crevice dubbed memory.
