Adelaide scoffed, looking up at him. "Don't say that. Do you know how much you helped the team in your whole time on the team? I thought you were the greatest player on the team, River," she responded honestly. She felt a smile begin to creep onto her face. Though she hated seeing him like this, his very presence seemed to make her smile. Sure, she was one of his ex's friends, but she always had a little crush on him. She admired his passion for football, and how determined he was to lead his team to victory.

Hearing the comforting words Adelaide was saying truly did help River feel a little better. She was right in the sense that he had won a lot of games for his team, which helped them a lot when it came to support and funding. The boy felt a small smile pull at the corners of his mouth when it resonated with him that Adelaide considered him to be her favorite, "Really?" the boy asked, kind of surprised that out of all of the players, she favorited him the most. River took a deep breath as he looked down at the girl, his mood improving just a little bit, "Walk with me to my locker? I gotta drop some things off and then we can head to homeroom," he asked, really not wanting to stray away from Adelaide's company. He was also hesitant to go to his locker alone, as it was in the hall with a few of the other guys on the team, and also his ex-girlfriend.

Addie caught the slight smile that flickered on his face, making her smile widen a bit more. At the mention of staying with him, she nodded. "Sure. Though everyone might have a problem with me hanging out with you still," she paused, glancing at him to catch his reaction. She just said to that to see how he'd react, she didn't actually care what they thought. River was amazing, and just because they hated him didn't mean she had too. "But I don't care what they think. I'll scream it from the rooftop that I'll continue to hang out with you because you're amazing," she found herself smiling like a dork, looking down the hallway. Adelaide took off down the hallway in the direction of his locker, knowing where it was due to her locker also being in the same hall.

River immediately felt his body loosen a little when Adelaide agreed to walk with him to his locker. He had been stressing about walking down this long hallway to get to his locker for the past two days, as he knew all he would get were death stares and maybe even a few rude comments. Having Adelaide's company made him worry less about all of that, because his focus remained on her. That happiness quickly faded away when she mentioned everyone having a problem with her hanging out with him. She was right, everyone really would hate that. The boy frowned as he looked down at the floor for a few moments. He was about to reassure her that she didn't need to walk with him if she was worried about what people thought, but before he could speak she added onto her previous comment. The boy's smile quickly returned to his face, unable to understand why this incredible girl was risking everything just to continue to be his friend. The boy's eyes followed her as she took off down the hall towards his locker. River did a quick jog down the hall in order to catch up with her, and then he walked beside her the rest of the way. As they turned down the hall where both their lockers were, his heart dropped. He immediately spotted his ex-girlfriend leaning against his locker, flirting with another player on the team, one he used to consider his best friend. River stood still for a moment, allowing what he was witnessing to set in. They hadn't even been broken up for twenty-four hours and she was already with another guy. River looked over at Adelaide, remembering that all of the other people didn't matter since she helped make it clear who his true friends were. River took a deep breath before walking over to his locker with his head held high, "Excuse me," he said coldly, his eyes leading the people to his locker in order to help tell them to move.

Adelaide wove her way towards his locker, feeling the dirty looks from all directions now for walking with River. She felt slightly powerful, seeming as she had made River smile when he probably didn't want to. As the turned down the entrance of the hall, she noticed his ex-girlfriend flirting with River's, seemingly former, best friend, and scoffed. "You literally have a whole school to go around and flirt, but you choose here," she commented, rolling her eyes and staying beside River the whole time. Her mind was clouded with a lot of different emotions, mostly anger, and made her almost keep walking down to where her locker was, but she stopped herself so that she could stay beside River. She could only imagine how cheer practice would go tonight. The girls would probably not listen to anything she did and waste their practice time talking and gossiping about her and River right in front of her, but she would only motivate her to continue being friends with him. Like she said before, she enjoyed hanging out with River, and just because the team had their own opinions about him wouldn't stop her.

"Look who actually showed their face today," his former best friend commented, moving to the side as he spoke. River ignored his comment and glared at his ex-girlfriend as she remained in her spot, leaning against his locker. Adelaide made a valid remark about them having the whole school to flirt, yet choosing to do it right in front of his locker. That only made him believe that they had planned that out, which wasn't beneath them. River looked down at Adelaide for a second before he returned his eyes to his ex, Izzy. He stood tall as he waited to see if she was going to move or say anything, but when she didn't, he simply shook his head, "Iz, move." he told her, "Please," he added. His eyes followed the girl's as she looked at him and then at Adelaide. He had known Izzy long enough to know what her looks meant, and this one was telling him that she was curious and annoyed to see him with Adelaide, but not because she was mad at him for losing the game like everyone else. This was a look of jealousy, which gave River a little piece of joy knowing that even though he had lost everything else, he still had the power to make her jealous. Riv raised his eyebrows as he gave Izzy one more look, telling her to move. When she finally did, he opened his locker and placed his backpack on the floor. He quickly slipped his letterman jacker off and threw it in there. He knew everyone was watching him, but he couldn't wear that jacket for one more second.

With a roll of her eyes, she felt herself glare at Izzy as she turned to the other side of River. She saw the look she gave her, and if anything, she saw the look of pure jealousy that she shot at her. Adelaide leaned against the lockers to River's right and watched him. She was about to make a remark about wearing his letterman herself, but she decided not to. "Someone's feeling a little better, eh?" She whispered it to him, wearing a charming smile. She hoped it was her that made his mood brighten a little. After seeing his ex girlfriend and best friend, he seemed to be doing well, and not freaking out on them like she would've.

After the jacket was in his locker, River bent down to his backpack and grabbed a few books from out of it. He didn't want to have to carry them around all day, so he thought it be best to empty out his bag. As the boy stood back up and placed the three books in his locker one by one, he turned to face Adelaide with a smile, "Thanks to you," he replied. The boy's smile quickly grew on his face as he spoke to Adelaide, forgetting anyone else was in the hall with them for a second. She really did help him feel better, because before talking to her he had been in the worst mood possible. Knowing that he had at least made one true friend over the past three and a half years really brought him some relief. He didn't know if he could handle having every single person in this school hate him. The boy placed his last book in his locker before bending down to pick up his bag. He swung one strap over his shoulder again and reached his hand out to close his locker. Just as he was about to do that, his eyes drifted over to Izzy at the sound of her voice. He couldn't help but overhear the flirtatious comments she was making to his old best friend, Marcus. The boy smirked slightly, both surprised and proud of himself for not feeling any anger towards his ex as she flirted with a guy right beside him. The boy looked over at Adelaide and reached into his locker, grabbing his letterman jacket from out of it, "Here," he said quietly, handing it to her, "Someone else should show it some love for the day," he added.

She couldn't help but smile when he handed her his letterman. "Sweet. I've always wanted to wear a guy's jacket," she added, gently setting her backpack on the floor. She pulled the jacket onto her and left the front unbottoned. Her face burned as she glanced at the sleeves of his jacket. The whole thing looked oversized and baggy on her, but that was because she was much smaller than him. "Thanks. How do I look?" Adelaide smiled, giving a little twirl to add in some humor. She picked up her bag once again, slinging it over her shoulder again. She heard the first bell ring, meaning they should probably head to homeroom. She wasn't in a hurry, though; they had two minutes until they were marked tardy.

River laughed quietly as the girl did a little spin in his jacket, "You look perfect," he replied, not just talking about the jacket. River looked up at the bell which was above the lockers when he heard it ring, "Better get going," he commented, slamming his locker shut and gripping onto the strap of his backpack. For some reason he had an urge to take Adelaide's hand, but he didn't. He wasn't sure why he suddenly wanted to do that. Was to to make Izzy jealous or because he genuinely wanted to hold her hand? He had no clue, but either way he didn't do it. The boy started walking in the direction of homeroom with Adelaide by his side. It had only been a few minutes that they had been together, but he was enjoying every moment of it. He regretted not spending more time with her when they were under better conditions, and he wasn't despised by everyone.
