the jock used to be captain of the football team and could get anything he wanted. but after his grades began going down, as well as his focus, he causes the team to loose the biggest game of the season. suddenly when he returns the following week, he finds out he's been kicked from captain position and is now the most hated player on the team. and to add onto that, his girlfriend, a girl on the cheersquad, broke up with him as soon as he was booted from his captain position.

the head cheerleader is the queen bee of the school. she's kind and generous and isn't snobby like most of the stereotypical queen bees. she's a friend to all, though some may not believe what she says. when they lost the biggest game in the season, she tried to convince the football team not to throw him from his position but she failed at trying to get him to keep him as captain. to this day, she's pretty much the only cheerleader/football player that doesn't have any sort of resentment for him. when his, now ex, girlfriend broke up with him, she was pretty much the only one there for him.

this is a 1x1 between rose- and wild. please don't post unless you're us, thank you.

River James is an eighteen year old male from California. He is the son of Cameron James and Sophia Mendez. River's father is a dentist, and his mother Sophia is a real-estate agent. River's parents have always been extremely focused on their careers, which caused them to not give River the attention he needed from them growing up. River was mostly raised by his grandmother, but when she passed away he was forced to figure out a way to get the attention and love he desired from his parents. He had many failed attempts of doing this, until one day he decided to go out for the football team at school. After making the team and helping them win almost all of the games during his first year, he slowly became his high school's star football player. The popularity he got from being one of the best players on the team slowly attracted the attention of his parents. When they figured out that their son was the reason this town won the state championships for the first time in seven years, they made it their mission to get involved in their son's life. River's parents started to attend every game in order to cheer him on, they supported his football career in anyway they could, and they soaked up the attention they got for being the ones who brought this star high school player into the world. Ever since joining the team River has been a star athlete at his high school. So far it has all been fun and games for River, but now that college is slowly approaching he is starting to feel the real pressures of being the best player. College scouts have started coming to his games in order to figure out if he's worthy of being signed to their teams. Because of that, River's coaches and parents have started putting an immense amount of pressure on him before each and every game, always reminding him what's at stake when he goes out there. His grades have started to slip because of the pressure he's putting himself under over his college career, and his home life is also getting pretty rough. He's been under an immense amount of stress lately, so his work ethic on the field has also been struggling. River has helped his team win the past three state championship games, but with all of the stress he's been under lately he wasn't able to bring a win home from this last game. He thought with his past track record that everyone would easily be forgiving of his head not being in the game, but boy was he wrong. In less than seventy-two hours he was replaced as captain, dumped by his girlfriend, and dismissed by his parents. Now poor River is trying to pick up the pieces of his world that had all come crumbling down in just a few short days.

How could one even put into words how terrible this past weekend had been for River? I guess you could describe it as being a catastrophe, but that would be putting it nicely. To start off the disastrous weekend for River, River and his team played at the state championship game on Friday night. He had led his team to victory for the past three years at this game, so he figured nothing would change. Little did he know that all the stress and anxiety he had been bubbling up inside him finally would explode during the most important minutes of the game, causing his team to lose. River had of course been mad at himself, but he spent the remainder of that night convincing himself that his team would forgive and forget because of all the past victories he had given them. He was wrong again. Bright and early the next day he got a call from his coach telling him they thought it was best that he stepped down as captain of the team, and take a few days to himself as he figured things out. Obviously losing the title he had worked so hard and long to get was heartbreaking, but to make matters worse for River, when he broke the news to his parents they basically dismissed him from existence. He was no longer their son who they put all their money and attention on, because he was no longer the son who was the football star and made the whole town love them. After losing the support from his parents, River paid his girlfriend a visit in hopes of getting some support again. Once again poor River was left disappointed, because on Sunday he woke up to a text from his girlfriend telling him it was best that they take a break. Now it was a new day, Monday morning to be exact, and River was impatiently waiting for the next devastating thing to occur in his life. Everything had just come crumbling down in his world, one thing after another all weekend, so he figured more devastation and heartbreak was ahead. The young boy gripped the steering wheel of his car as he took a deep breath in. He had been sitting in the school's parking lot for the past twenty minutes, trying to gain the courage to go inside and face the crowd. River was no longer the football star he had left school being on Friday afternoon, and he really couldn't remember what life was like before he became Mr. Popular. After a few more minutes of sitting in the car, the boy finally got out and headed towards the school doors, gripping the strap of his backpack with one of his hands as it hung off of his shoulder. He could already feel the stares and hear the whispers as he passed by people on his way to the front doors, but he tried his best to ignore them. This was a walk that he had never paid much attention to before today, but now he focused on every little detail of it as he tried to ignore everyone around him.

    Adelaide Matthews

Adelaide Matthews' weekend by far had to be the most stressful, though she knew that was an understatement compared to the one person's weekend that remained on her mind. Yup. That boy was River James, now ex-football captain and ex-boyfriend of one of her best friends. Friday night, their small town lost the biggest game of the season. Both the cheerleaders and football players blamed him for it, but Addie didn't believe them. She tried everything in her power to stop them from calling up the coach to break the news that they wanted him booted, but since this was only one person trying to persuade a group of at least 25 individuals not to do something they most definitely wanted to do, she failed. This only infuriated her, not understanding why they would do someone they know so well that dirty. She spent the rest of the weekend worrying about River, though she could've saved her the worrying.

It was now Monday. Addie had gotten a ride from one of the other cheerleaders, arriving later than most. She wore a simple red flannel and black ripped jeans, something she often wore. She laughed at something her friend had said, her eyes scanning the students entering the building as they approached. "Wait, Morgan. Hold up," she called out, kneeling down and removing her backpack from off her back. She unzipped the top zipper, searching through her belongings for the phone that wasn't in her back pocket. She needed it if she was going to make it to homeroom on time, though she managed to get into homeroom without the teacher noticing. After finally spotting the phone, she pulled it out of her backpack. Zippering it once again and placing her phone in her back pocket, she jumped at the small growl from the girl beside her.

"It's River. He actually had the audacity to show his face at school."

Adelaide rolled her eyes, leaving her friend in the dust. She took off speed-walking in hopes of meeting paths with him. She did eventually cross paths, after she'd paused. She smiled in attempt to calm the nervousness that clearly radiated off the boy. She could already hear the whispers about him, and decided to speak over them. "Good morning, River," she chimed, her hazel eyes trying to find his.

So this is what it felt like to have the people who you thought were your friends turn on you because of one dumb game. Who knew this school loved football that much? Oh wait, he did. The only reason River ever got recognized in this small town was because of his athletic talent. He had spent his entire life in this town, and it wasn't until his first year of high school that people actually took the time to learn his name. Before he was just known as the son of the town's favorite dentist, or the young boy always spotted with the best real-estate agent in town. You might think that's not a big deal, but in a small town where everyone knows everyone, it hits you hard when you realize no one knows who you are. Football was River's way in when it came to the small groups this town had formed. You had the jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, drama kids, ect., all under the same roof of this high school. Students quickly figured out which group they belonged to in their early middle school years, except River. Unlike the rest of the kids in this town, River didn't find his place until after taking a risk and going out for the football team. When he first started out he belonged to no group and had barely any friends. It's kind of a miracle he didn't end up being weird and anti-social, because he really didn't have much of a social life—or family life for that matter. He spent the majority of his childhood keeping his grades high and staying locked in his room playing video games by himself. Not much fun when you think about it, but it's all he had. His parents were always at work, and while some kids from school would occasionally come over and hang out with him, they never really connected enough for River to consider them his friends. He had been lonely for so long, that he kind of started to get used to it.

But high school changed all of that for him, at least for three years it did. Now it was the middle of River's senior year of high school, and he was pretty sure his failure of winning the game was about to take him back to those lonely days he had experienced as a kid. River let a quiet sigh escape him as he pushed the front doors of the school open, and watched as everyone immediately turned to look at him as he entered. Instead of being greeted with smiles and high-fives, all River got were death stares and irritated whispers. The boy continued on his walk through the school, heading towards his locker so that he could drop some things off, specifically his letterman jacket. River wore this jacket almost everyday because he was proud to be a member of the football team, and enjoyed the attention he got because of it. But now that everyone was against him, he figured it was best to take a break from wearing his favorite jacket. As he headed towards the hall that his locker was in, he was approached by a familiar face. At first he was hesitant to hear what she had to say, but after the kind greeting left Adelaide's mouth, he knew he still at least had one person who didn't hate his guts, "Morning Ade," he said quietly. His eyes moved around the room as he paused from walking in order to speak to the girl. He noticed all the people with there disgusted looks on their faces, shocked that he would show his face after what happened Friday night. The boy let out a quiet sigh as he looked down at Adelaide, "Not sure how good of a morning it is though," he eventually said, the feeling of everyone's eyes making him tense up.

The girl tried to smile, but even she felt the stares of the people who stopped to give River dirty looks. Maybe it was just her, but she thought she heard a flicker of her name getting tossed around by the people who whispered. Anger bubbled within her surface. He didn't deserve this for just one loss. The others probably didn't even remember how much succession this boy had caused their town. Ever since he joined the team freshman year, the team began winning their games more frequently. She turned back to him as she spoke again. She gave a slight nod. "I understand. Just know I don't hate you and I'm here if you ever want to talk," Adelaide responded, looking up at him again.

The young boy forced a faint smile onto his face as he listened to Adelaide speak to him, "Thanks," he replied. In this moment he appreciated Adelaide more than he ever had before. They had become friends shortly after he had joined the team, mostly because both the football players and cheerleaders had practice on the field at the same time. They were always around each other, so their friendship was bound to happen eventually. She was always a bubbly and positive person to be around, and was nothing like the stereotypical cheerleading captains. She was kind and caring to not just her friends, but also everyone else in the school. River loved that about her, and it's what actually caused him to form a small crush on her. Those feelings he had for her subsided when he started dating his now ex-girlfriend, but as he stood in the halls with Adelaide, he began to remember what he had appreciated and liked so much about her. She knew he was the most hated guy in school now, but yet she still took the time to talk to him and remind him she was still there for him. River ran his hand through his hair as he continued to stand in the hall, "...I really do need someone to talk to," he admitted, his eyes dropping to the ground as all the events that had happened this past weekend flashed in his mind.

Noticing his frown, she decided to try to say something to cheer him up. "Come on, Sunshine. Smile more. I know it's hard right now, but all you gotta do is get yourself back up there. You really didn't deserve any of the stuff that happened this weekend," she tried, smiling once again up at him. She wanted to offer skipping her first period class since she had a pretty decent grade in it, but she pushed the thought into the back of her mind. She watched Morgan pass, now walking with one of her friends. Morgan shot her and River a dirty look, making Addie's face fall. Morgan was being an actual friend to her this morning, but now that Adelaide was talking to River, she didn't seem to like the idea of her. She rolled her eyes, still holding an annoyed face as she kept her gaze down.

The boy’s eyes looked back up for a few moments as he listened to Adelaide speak, but his eyes once again dropped to look at his shoes as his mind ran wild. River shrugged slightly and shook his head in disagreement, ”I lost one of the biggest games of the season, Ade. They have every right to hate me,” he explained. The reason he felt so badly about all of this was because he was blaming himself for losing the game. If he hadn’t been so distracted with all of the things that had been stressing him out lately, he would’ve been able to catch the ball and score a touchdown in the last few minutes of the game. He knew deep down that after so many victories it was bound to happen that he would lose one, but he just hated that it was this one that he had lost.
