𝖌𝖗𝖆𝖇𝖇𝖎𝖓𝖌 her hand softly and slowly, shylo was
flushed with mild regret. not only because he
knew she could hurt him mildly, but because he
was nervous, and that meant his hands were
sweaty and clamy. he had always been self-
conscious of that.

but, the angel in him couldn't help but trust
her. "but?" he asked as she trailed off.

rei was slightly surprised when shylo actually grabbed her hand. she hadn't expected him to do so, not after what she had done today.

"trust me. i promise, it won't hurt," she murmured. she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"abra silentio, rei shas shylo," she whispered.

a soft, tingling feeling sent a shiver down her arm, to her hand, and into shylo's.

rei smiled softly. "now nobody can hear us but us," she explained. "a gift of magic, passed down from generation to generation."

"𝖆𝖓𝖉 now you posses it?" he asked, genuine
curiosity, "or do all demons posses it? i
apologize if this is a dumb question, i've
never come into actual contact with a demon.
i assume i'd know after the feeling i got
when we touched hands if i have before."

shylo was embarrassed by his bluntness and
him being rather ignorant about the subject.
his cheeks flushed a bright red as he looked
at rei.

rei smiled tightly. "yes, you've caught me. i am the daughter of General Keire Sha-Moon, the High Advisor to the King who rules us. we are still a very traditional society, so the rank structure still stands. the gift of magic was given to seven demons,
and any demon who possess magical ability is a descendant of one of them," she explained.

rei couldn't believe that she was telling shylo all of this. she had just met him today, this alluring, ethereal...angel. "how about you, shylo? do you have anything to share with me?"

"𝖞𝖔𝖚 have rulers?" shylo asked, shocked. while he
had a being who made final decisions, they all
got to pitch in. he had a funny feeling that wasn't
how it worked where she was from. "doesn't that
make you like a cool, evil demon princess?" he
asked, joking, swaying his shoulders with his words
and moving his hands.

he nodded softly, pausing his swaying. "what do ya
know?" he chuckled, keeping the mood light and as
fun as possible. "i'm an angel," he remarked, making
jazz hands. he stopped, looking at his hands before
placing them in his laugh, coughing awkwardly.
"parents aren't a thing, everyone co-parents the
younger angels, we're very loving creatures. truly
amazing, if you ask me."

rei laughed, for real this time, throwing her head back and flipping her hair.

“i’m not exactly a princess, but i possess the rank of sergeant and i stand alongside my father in High Court,” she explained.

shylo looked even funnier with his jazz hands. everything her father had claimed about angels were so far, untrue. shylo was cute and funny, all in one angelic body.

“that is amazing,” rei agreed longingly. “that sounds so... heavenly,” she couldn’t help smiling at her own bad joke. “what brings you to earth? and of all places, why school?”

"𝖊𝖉𝖚𝖈𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓, to put it simply. but in a longer,
extended answer, the older generations of
angels thought it'd be best for the younger
generation, such as myself, to live among
humans," he smiled softly through his
words at rei's laughter. it brought him
genuine joy. "why, i don't know, all i know
is that i've had to go to earth solely for
schooling and communication with humans
for a good 127 years. exhausting,
really, hiding yourself, but i assume you
understand."

conversation with rei flew so smoothly
that it was uncanny. she wasn't at all
what she was taught demons were like.
she was seemingly intelligent, funny,
and rather understanding. he enjoyed
her company more than most of the
younger generation of the angels he
lived with for his first thirty years of
living.

"what brings you to earth, let alone
school?" he asked. he then
remembered her awful pun about
it sounding heavenly and decided
to shoot one back, "well, yours
sounds hellish, if i have to be
honest."

rei sighed. “mother and father sent me here for schooling and to become accustomed with humans. usually, children of military families do. it’s supoosed to help with our future jobs. demons do some work on earth, sometimes.” rei felt too embarrassed to reveal that the “work” was usually hunting down angels.

“honestly though, i prefer life on earth. it is a fabulous release from the stress and demands of my life back at home.” rei smiled. “i suppose you could say that my life at home was quite hellish.”

rei unwrapped her banana bread. it was still warm and soft, the aroma of the fruit and the chocolate topping floating up. popping half of it into her mouth, she offered the other to shylo. “my favourite,” she smiled and mumbled around a mouthful, covering her mouth with her hand.

𝖘𝖍𝖆𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖌 his head, shylo spoke, "oh,
i shouldn't. as wonderful as banana
bread is, you should enjoy it."

shylo couldn't help but chuckle at
her lack of manners mixed with
manners. he wasn't used to this.
he wasn't used to mindless
conversation, he wasn't used to
talking to anyone who wanted to
talk about anything other than
what they could do to improve
the life of humans and encourage
them to do better so they would
end up with them.

taking a sip from his now cold
coffee, shylo smiled. he was
really enjoying her company
and was beginning to hope that
this would become a daily thing.

even though they had just met that day, rei had never felt closer to someone. shylo was funny and serious at all the right times, and she genuinely enjoyed conversing with him. their discussion had no motive, no ultimate goal that either of them was working towards. in fact, they were discussing what poor lonely human soul had had the idea to create a large machine solely for the purpose of frothing milk and drawing cats on top of coffee.

rei only looked away from shylo when she realized that the rest of the cafe was empty, and that the young barista had started cleaning all of the equipment.
