ever since the death of his older brother, finn has wanted nothing
more than to seek the killer worthy of his brother's death. the only
way to do that was to sail the seven seas, scouring out every nook
and cranny to find the man that killed his brother in cold blood. a
fter his shared amount of travels, finn came across a gold-thirsty
pirate captain and his crew. the captain promised that he would
help find said killer in exchange for helping them find a mermaid.
reluctantly, finn accepted, and not only has he supported the cre
w and its voyage, but he also became a reckless pirate himself.

With a golden tail, and long brown hair, Cassandara
is one of the many beauties of the sea known as the
"mermaid." She isn't a delicate flower, though she's
far from a wild storm. She's like an untame horse,
calm when treated tenderly, feral when she's scared.

FINNICK HANSEN !!
age twenty-three yo // location abandoned island // tags the ship's crew, cassandra
"Ready the anchors, men!" Captain Thaddeus Taylor's graveled voice lay thick among the noisy air. Finnick, who was aboard the side bars of the ship, had his blue-green gaze set on the anchors plummeting into the sea, disturbing the waves with a few clad shakes. His grip tightened on the wooden planks, biting his lower lip as he twisted his head over to the captain standing just behind the wheel of the ship, large hands cranking a couple of the many handles. The fleet jostled as soon as the anchor hit the shallow end of the water in a muffled thud. The crew scrambled around, fastening ropes onto knobs. The ship gave way to the rising sea floor, eventually stopping where the current met the shoreline.
A few triumphant howls boomed from the crew. Captain Taylor removed his feathered hat from his peppered hair, a jutted grin forming on his lips. Finnick too, was a little more than relieved to know that the sails finally reached the supposed home of the mermaids. At least, that's what the crew thought. Finn had his doubts, but if it meant it would bring him closer to finding the captor of his brother's death, then he would do whatever it took. That was Taylor's promise. It was foolish to put your trust in the hands of a pirate, but Finn's hope was running thin, and if it meant he had to deal a wild card, then so be it.
Finn's boots hit the grainy sand with a soft grunt, his head lifting over yonder to the other side of the island peeking through a jagged stone. A ghost of a smile cornered his mouth on both sides, chin lowering to weave a hand through his golden hair. "By God, we made it," he muttered, mostly to himself. He placed both of his hands on his hips, half-lidded eyes scanning the clearing with a sense of pride twinging his features. With a short-lived glance, he looked over to Thaddeus, and in turn he gave him an expectant look. "What better way to explore an abandoned island than to walk around it?" he replied to his hard stare, as though the captain asked a question. Thaddeus, appearing content, rolled his eyes over to the farther patch just a few feet down from where the crew was standing, scratching the neck of his scraggly beard.
Finn offered himself another comment that would surely convince Thaddeus. "For all we know, there could be a mermaid here," That seemed to catch the captain's attention. His mustache curved upward into a neutral grin, nodding his head. "Alright, boy. I trust your navigation skills. Suppose it's one way to put them to the test." The captain smirked, ushering with his pointed hand past the jagged rock blocking what was most of the pathway ahead.
Without another word, Finn slung his satchel of goods over his shoulder, his feet pushing the sand as it molded his steps like clay. He placed a hand on the jagged rock once there, whipping his head to give the crew one last confident smirk before fully making his way past the roundabout. Not a few moments had past and the man was already captivated by the scenery. Moss clung to more stones, the placement of said stones forming like spiky hills to the very top of one of the peaks. Greenery enveloped the line of sand, casting shadows on the grain to make it shimmer like burning gold.
But he stopped himself in his tracks once his eye caught on to a being washed up on the shoreline. The blue waves clapped away at the figure's form, leaving behind the damp sand, turning it into mud. On instinct, Finn rushed over to the figure's side, kneeling down to get a better look at what it was. It surely wasn't human. In fact, it looked to be a mermaid. A fish tail for legs wasn't something that could be mistaken for a large fish, Thaddeus made that very clear. Finn Hansen, a cabin boy, came across a prized mermaid. By himself, no doubt.
Blinking, Finn shook away his thoughts, instead gently placing a hand over the mermaid's shoulder to flip her onto her back. His eyes narrowed, scanning the mermaid to check if there were any standing cuts on bruises. All seemed fine, from what he could see. Gingerly, he placed a hand underneath the mermaid's nape, cupping her head into his palm as he pulled her into his lap in one swift movement. He parted the mermaid's dark, damp curls from her face, which gave him a better look of the mermaid's elegant, sleeping features. Finn wetted his lips, thinking of what he should say if the mermaid was able to hear him. "Hey, uh, can you hear me?" he asked. It was a stupid question but, he wanted to know if she was able to respond, and, more importantly, if she was okay.

Cassandara's skin felt dry as she came into consciousness. If her memory served her correctly, she'd passed out due to a lack of oxygen only inches from the surface due to the net that had entangled her. It was rare for her to see debris floating in the water, and she couldn't begin to guess where it had come from. All she could do is thank the sea that she was close enough to wash up onto an island before she'd drown. The sky above her offered a warmth, uninhibited by the waves typically crashing far above her head. The sand was soft, welcoming, and likely her savior from dangers of her own home. She could still feel the net wrapped around her body, though she didn't doubt she could figure out some way to get it off of her now that she wasn't struggling to swim.
As she opened her eyes, light flooded them, suggesting it must be sometime around mid-day. The second thing she saw was a face, looming over her and holding her in his lap. Her heart immediately began pounding. Suddenly the net around her felt more constricting than ever and the urge to struggle violently welled inside her. "Hey, uh, can you hear me?" The voice seemed calm, though she wasn't about to drop her pretense of fear. Her chest rose and fell in short gasps, her eyes searching his for something that could tell her his intentions. Nothing.
She tried to push herself away from him but ended up only half rolling into a different position. The ropes around her kept her from really fighting. She gurgled a bit as she tried to speak, spitting up the water she hadn't realized was stuck in her lungs. "Please," she murmured in a thick, untraceable accent, "Help me." The words seemed much more existential than she'd intended, in truth all she wanted was to be released from the net, though she wasn't sure if asking politely would even do any good.

Finn wasn't expecting to hear her reply, so it surprised him once the mermaid gurgled her reply. Her words were almost indisputable, had it not been for the water spewing out of her mouth. Her voice was distinct, elegant.. Thick of an accent that he couldn't recall. She needed help, more than likely referring to the net that trapped her body. The spokes weighing her down from the net's ropes could've very well meant bad luck if she hadn't gotten so close to the surface. The cabin boy gently pulled himself away from the mermaid, hands fiddling around with the knotted ropes. It was a good thing he brought his satchel, because inside was a dagger. Forking it out of the satchel's pocket, he slit one of the ties, one after the other, until the net provided a good enough opening for him to pull her out. Once she was close enough in his arms, Finn kicked her free of the last few tugs of netting, hoisting her back into his lap.
She looked pale, sickly. It made him wonder how long she'd been out here. Days? Weeks? It would've been too hard to guess, but the most important thing she needed was warmth. She was colder than a block of ice. In one swift movement, the cabin boy lifted himself up to his feet, the mermaid well above his weight. She was light and dainty, which was a good thing for now, as it made it easier for Finn to pick her up. The trip back to the ship took no more than a few minutes, and the fact that Thaddeus' greed for mermaids didn't cross the cabin boy's mind until the ship's mast peeked over the roundabout of the jagged rock, the same he'd passed by before he left.
Finn sucked in a breath, out of both exasperation and heavy thinking. Once his figure came into view, the members of the crew had all their eyes turned to him, soon followed by Captain Taylor leaping off the front mast of the fleet. Through a raised brow, the captain met the cabin boy, shock flowing over his features at the sight of what was in his arms. My God, Hansen.. You found a mermaid.." For once in his life, Thaddeus was speechless. A bit of color formed at Finn's cheeks, while gazing down at the fear-stricken mermaid, which made his expression completely contort into that of a frown. "She's deathly cold, Captain. We need to wrap her up in something warm before she freezes over." Through a curt nod, the captain called out to one of the crew members, demanding that he fetch a blanket, while he turned back to Finn to usher him onto the fleet. "Take her to the main quarters below the deck. It should be safe for her there."
The cabin boy nodded, carefully climbing onto the mast while paying mind to the mermaid, making his way back down to the quarter's as his captain commanded. Once there, Finn could see the blanket, already folded neatly on one of the cabin's bunks. He walked over to the bedside and lay her there, unfolding the blanket and throwing it over her frame in a ginger manner. He didn't want to leave, not until he knew that she was alright. In a hushed, calm voice, Finn asked "Is there anything you need?"

Cassandara didn't know what to make of the man. He didn't reply to her, though he did immediately move to help her with the binding. Logically, she knew that the knife was for cutting the ropes. But, her emotions controlled her thoughts and made her heart beat a million times faster than it already was. He never let go of her, at least not for more than a few seconds, and the very moment she was entirely unbound he pulled her back onto his lap. She couldn't tell if he was concerned, restraining her, or both, however, his intentions were made clearer when he hoisted her up without a word and began walking towards an unspecified location. She could've struggled at that moment, likely could've done some damage with the strength she held in her tail, but the boy had walked further up shore now and it would be pointless. She was built for the water, every part of her made for its embrace, but on land, she was weak, nothing more than a fixture of little real worth.
She didn't wrap her arms around him, she didn't make an effort to hold onto her only stability, her focus was entirely set on the scene in front of them. Her eyes naturally strayed to the ocean where she easily noticed, on its surface, a large ship. The mass of the vessel was monumental and certainly something to behold, even by her standards. The next thing her eyes met was a mass of people, twenty at least, all turned to look at her. One stood out to her, even before he approached them.
Mermaids are romantic by nature. Most of their fairy-tales are cautionary to young, lovestruck calves about the charming seamen who die when in falling into love fall into the sea as well and drown with a smile on their face. But there are other stories, ones that are favored by sirens, who show the way to read a person in watching the way their eyes change when present with something new. It was the eyes of that man that she noticed first in that man who then approached them. She saw greed there, lying not far beneath the surface as the smile crept across his face. He was what she feared, men like him. Those men who displayed nothing but greed when they saw the eyes of others.
The man, addressed as Hansen by the man who she now knew to be his captain, held her tightly and brought her aboard the ship. The eyes of all the crew were on her, their strength ready to impress itself on her at one wrong move kept her from struggling. She allowed Hansen to carry her all the way to the lower deck and set her down on one of the bunks set up there. His words elicited internal mocking from Cassandara. She may be frightened, but asking if she needed anything was still ridiculous in her eyes. "I need," she said in that signature accent, holding back the tears and instead replacing them with half-hearted anger, "to go back to my home."

The cabin boy retreated himself at the slightest, and shook his head at her reply. His green gaze flicked aimlessly around the room, to keep his eyes off of her for a short moment before locking them back onto her features. "I can't," Finnick answered simply, slowly rising from his seat on the edge of the bed. "And even if I wanted to, it wouldn't be my decision to make." He kept himself near where the mermaid was laying, even though he parted himself from the bed, just to make sure if she'd actually have the desire to answer his question. And it wasn't that he didn't want to return the mermaid to her home. Finn knew that Thaddeus wanted nothing out of this mermaid but wealth the second he laid his eyes on her. It wasn't his call, he was just a cabin boy among the larger voices of the more authorative ranks on the fleet. And what did he do? He just cleaned up after them and washed the floorboards.
(sorry for the late reply!! and i know this post is shorter lmao)

It wasn't the answer she had wanted, but it was far from unexpected. His wording did somewhat sadden her though, she thought he may have been her only safe place even if he had been the one to put her in this situation. But it seemed he didn't care. "Even if I wanted to," he'd said. Either he was as consumed by greed as the others or he simply held a painfully apathetic view of her. Whichever it was made little difference, she would not seek comfort from him unless he showed reason to change her mind. "Hansen!" A voice cried, accompanied by heavy footsteps from above. "We're-" the man paused upon reaching the bottom of the stairs and seeing both of them. He gave a huff of annoyance and marched over, Cassandara cowering in the corner of the mattress as he grabbed the blanket off of her and threw it aside. "Don't put a blanket on her you'll dry her out," his face glanced back to Cassandara and she stared back at him with a look of death in her eyes. He shook his eyes, instead shifting his gaze to 'Hansen'. "We're going to keep her on the top deck, actually, so we can get water to her without gettin' our own beds soaked. We also need you to watch her while we check the rest of the island, shouldn't take too long."
{not a problem at all!}

FINNICK HANSEN !!
age twenty-three yo // location abandoned island // tags cassandara, member of the crew (briefly)
Finn grimaced as the mermaid's features fell. She was frightened, confused, longing for her home, and the best thing he came up with was that she had no choice to return to it. Showing warmth to others wasn't something he was used to, especially since the death of his brother. He had no desire to show excessive kindness towards others, mostly because he worried about growing too attached. It was all out of caution, really. No matter how abrasive it seemed. Finn's head shot over to a voice growing from above the ship, the thumps of the man's feet escalating until they reached the bottom of the staircase. The man appeared shocked over the state of the mermaid, and threw off the covers, suggesting that she be above the fleet rather than dried out from being too far from the water. It was a wonder how much the man knew about mermaids, suppose Captain Taylor drilled all of the information needed to know about the creatures to his crew. It wasn't until now that Finn thought of how bad of an idea it was to show this mermaid to the captain in the first place.
Reluctantly, Finn nodded, scooping the mermaid in his arms once more and showing himself back up to the main deck. Once there, the cabin boy grabbed a large bucket, normally used for getting rid of extra seawater if the ship were to overflow, after gently setting her down on the floorboards. He knelt down, plummeting the bucket into the seawater until it was full enough. He threw the bucket into his arms, and put it back down on the ground. It was the size of a tub, big enough for the mermaid to lay in. He picked her up once more and placed her into the tub, pulling up a miscellaneous stool beside him to keep watch of her, as the man said. He clapped his hands over his knuckles, rubbing them a bit as he wetted his lips, struggling to think of something to say. "Hopefully that's better," he said suddenly, trying out his warmer, more collected tone of voice. "I should've known better than to leave you in the bunks without any water." He bit his lower lip, green eyes flicking back up to the mermaid as he left his words open in the air. "I'm Finn, by the way. Finnick Hansen."
