“Thank you,” Roanne murmured as a grey Abnegation woman stood up, allowing her to sit on the bus. This woman must have come from the furthest end of the Abnegation sector, because the Abnegation usually walked everywhere.
Roanne felt the warning hand of her father rest on her shoulder. An old lesson: never interact with the Abnegation because they’re not smart enough. They sat in silence as the Candor families chattered excitedly around them. There were a few familiar faces, but Roanne didn't have anything to say to them. Nobody except the Candor had words today.
As the bus pulled to a stop, the Abnegation shuffled around, allowing everyone else to disembark first. Roanne stepped off the bus and looked up at The Hub. It was what they called a skyscraper in her history books. Roanne followed her parents towards the building where they crowded into an elevator. They shot up to the top floor.

"Ji zhu. Ni ji dao za xuan. Wo ai ni." Roanne's father drew her into a tight hug, and her mother gave her a light kiss on the forehead. There was no need for parting words, because they were not parting. The Ceremony lasted two hours, sometimes less if there weren't many kids to Choose that year. Roanne found her seat in the circle surrounding the room, and she watched as her parents greeted friends in the Erudite section.
"Roanne!" Roanne turned to see Janae Vick, a blonde girl from Candor who she knew from school. "Janae," Roanne smiled, relieved to see a familiar face.
"Are you ready?!" Janae was almost bouncing with excitement. "We're Choosing today!"
"Yes, I know. Why else would we all be here?" Roanne responded, then bit her lip. That was harsh, and she knew it. "I'm sorry, Janae. I'm really nervous. I didn't mean to snap like that," she tried to explain.
"Oh, no worries! I'm nervous too! What if I tripped walking to the stage? But I'm not nervous about the actual Choosing though! I obviously know that I'm staying in Candor, it's my home! I really don't understand those faction transfers! I mean, why would you leave behind everything you know? It's just stupid..."
Roanne turned, trying to tune Janae out. Candors really were huge blabbermouths.
"Ji zhu. Ni ji dao za xuan. Wo ai ni." --> "Remember. You know how to choose. I love you."

"Janae Vick!" called Marcus Eaton, the leader of Abnegation. Roanne wiped her slick hands on her blue shirt as the blonde girl jumped up and practically ran towards the bowls. She watched as Marcus Eaton handed Janae the knife. Almost as soon as she had grasped the knife in her hand, her blood was already staining the Candor glass a deeper shade of red.
Roanne watched as Janae joined her parents and brother in the Candor section. Her mother squeezed her hands, and her father kissed the top of her head. Obviously Janae had done the right thing.
"Roanne Tran!" called Marcus Eaton.
For the first time in her life, Roanne didn't have a plan in her head. In fact, she didn't have the faintest idea on how today would turn out. As she took slow, measured steps towards the bowls, she tried to think.
Knowledge is power. Knowledge is right. Knowledge is strength.
Were those not the words painted on the wall above her bed at home? Her bed. She hadn't made it this morning.
Words are the most powerful weapon.
Marcus Eaton handed the knife to her. Roanne held it gently, running her finger against the flat side of the cold blade.
You are my daughter, and my daughter must learn!
Roanne turned towards the five bowls.
No daughter of mine shall refuse the teachings of an Erudite!
The words of her father when she had cried of exhaustion in the eleventh straight hour of studying.
Is it that hard?! Swim, damn it!
She turned to the bowl of pink water.
Water. She hated water.
Roanne slid the knife down her palm. As the first drop of crimson rolled off her hand, she shifted her weight towards the sizzling black coals of Dauntless.
Courage is power. Strength is power.
