There's a lot more at the bottom of the ocean than we know of, marine species that we do not yet know exist.
It is these secrets that have drawn some to the depths of the deep blue, to discover and protect the biodiversity the salt waters hold, treasures that humans presently have no knowledge of...
But, surely not an entire city? That houses strange creatures of the water, which have lives as intricate as humans? On the ocean floors, we cannot possibly expect to find a land that has been lost, for so long as to have been passed on into myths and legends...

          ... Can we?

Poor Luther

Postby feather_light_flight » Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:06 am

Luther generally made it a point to avoid complicated situations. He enjoyed the peaceful things in life. Rehabilitating sea otters, helping injured dolphins, hell, he even dedicated three months to reuniting a baby manta ray with it's family. Any of those things Luther could handle. They were simple, they were enjoyable, they didn't typically put his life in danger. This though, was far beyond anything Luther had expected, and it was shaping up to be a less than desirable day.

He had just finished releasing a pair of exotic fish off the coast that had formed a mated bond in captivity. That much had gone smoothly. What wasn't smooth was when Luthor was preparing to resurface, and a freaking hoard of jelly fish came out of nowhere. Now, normally, Luther and jelly fish get along just fine, he avoided touching them- as you should- and generally they took very little interest in humans. These however had clumped up in just such a way that resurfacing without getting stung was rapidly becoming a nearly impossible situation.

Cursing in his head, Luther twirled around under water, checking his oxygen levels as he tried to formulate a plan. He was farther down than he was supposed to be, making the dive already risky, and now he was prolonged in how long he'd be under. If he didn't find a way out soon, he'd run out of air and....well we know what happens when people run out of air and it's not pretty to say the least.

Never leave the city's borders without your trident. The most important rule any citizen has to follow. Your trident not only acts as a weapon, but as a way of communication with sea creatures, a signal to others, a sign of status, et cetera, et cetera.
Not that Darya ever went anywhere without it, but could barely stand up without have to hear the same speech drawled three times over, before she could start walking in anyway. The Atlantian royal was known to wander outside the city too often, but no-one would, or could, stop her.

And so, wandering around a little farther from home than usual, Darya turned her stroll into a solo patrol, her near-iridescent eyes taking in all that formed part of her domain. The odd fish here, the lonely coral there, the human diver handling some rarer marine species--

Wait. Concealing herself behind a column of rock, the woman observed the diver with a narrowed gaze most wary. Not on her watch were they going to steal anything more from the oceans, after all the damage they had been causing. Rising sea temperatures were one of the most pressing matters for the salt-water dwellers and it was being made worse by human activity.
All she had to do was watch and wait for the fish to leave the area, before confronting the intruder. Watching the scales shimmer, as their tails flickered from side to side was always a mesmerising experience for Darya. So much so that she was always distracted by it enough that her previous task seemed to slip, clean, out of her mind.
Once the pair had gone too far out of sight, she stepped out of her hiding place, if only to watch the fish, just a little longer.
Idiot! head whipping back to her initial focus, Darya crouched, defensively, poised to attack. However, she was met with a rather unexpected situation.

A swarm of jelly fish had begun to gather, blocking the diver from returning to the surface and Darya knew well enough the pain of becoming wrapped up in their stinging tentacles. She also knew that humans could not survive underwater very long, if they ran out of oxygen and even with the device on their back, they would very soon become short of breath. A quick swim upwards was not only made impossible by the jelly fish, but also by the change in pressure, which would be too quick, if one swam straight up. That would lead to some nasty after-effects.

It seemed that attack would have to wait for another day.

Approaching the hoard, Darya raised her essential travel tool and tried to negotiate with the accumulating number of creatures. Unfortunately, it seemed that they felt quite invaded by the diver and refused to disperse for but a few moments.
Well, they'd never been the kindest or most forgiving of creatures, despite their apparent lack of backbone. This left the Atlantian with one other option.

Her father would be most displeased, when she returned, but what was she to do? Just because she didn't really like humans, it did not mean she was cruel enough to leave them to suffocate.
Once nearer to the diver, she focused all her concentration on the water around her and them, willing it to move far enough to create a bubble of air large enough for the two of them to stand in. It would allow for easier communication with the human, at the same time.

Having done this, she managed to ensure the human was also inside the bubble of air, but she said nothing, simply watching their reaction. This was quite a draining task and she wasn't going to waste precious energy with one who was not going to show any appreciation for the assisstance.

      So she waited.

Luther was sure he was going to die some mildly tragic, albeit, ironic death at the sea bed, surrounded by angelic looking jelly fish and his face would be blue from lack of air. Oh damn his luck. Desperation was beginning to claw at his mind, eyes darting from colorful creature to creature, and suddenly, the creatures weren't so close and Luther...he wasn't floating. Swimming. Whatever.
He was standing...in a bubble...at the bottom of the sea....oh man, maybe his oxygen had ran out sooner than he thought. Glancing up, the man was almost convinced that he had somehow died without notice and ended up in some strange after life, because standing before him....was a woman. A pretty...intimidating...woman. With dark brown hair draped around her shoulders and pale eyes, she would have struck Luther intitially as an angel....except he was pretty sure Angels didn't carry three pronged pitch forks.
Gulping down a lump of fear, the man glanced around, daring to pull his respirator from his mouth, and tug his goggles onto his forehead.

"Uh...hi....am I dead...?" Well there's no accounting for grace. The lanky man twisted his neck to look around. The jelly fish still hovered near by, but they were leaving the two alone in their little bubble....god a freaking bubble...at the bottom of the sea. And his boss said the return would be an uncomplicated project. Luther almost snorted at the memory, before he remembered the company he was keeping. "Uh sorry...I'm Luther Ramirez...and you are?" A small, hopeful smile quirked at the corner of the man's mouth, even as anxiety roiled in his belly. What in the world was going on?

You're out of your depth

Perhaps humans weren't as cunning has she had previously thought, in fact, it seemed to Darya that they were quite easily entranced. Perhaps it was the lack of oxygen getting to them. Or him, as it so seemed.

Pulling her dripping hair behing her back, she wrung some of the water out of it, never taking her eyes off the man. It wasn't entirely unlikely that he wasn't dazed at all, but simply acting to stay alive, so he could return to his people and come back with who-knew-what. Maybe the rest of the human race would feel threatened by the presence of the Atlantians, or would purpose to exploit their treasures or anything else in the multitude of bad scenarios that could stem from this one moment. She had to be careful with what she said.

As he removed the devices from his face, Darya got the impresion that this one... this one was genuinely bewildered. Well, the right amount to make it seem natural anyway. Maybe he was a better actor than she thought.

Unexpectedly, a chuckle escaped her, hearing the man's first comment.
"No, you're not dead... yet." Her response felt too impulsive and she struggled to keep a neutral expression. She didn't want to get on a basis too friendly with the human; truth be told, she wasn't sure if she would - or wanted - to see him again, once he was gone.

He seemed distracted by the surroundings for a minute, looking around in wonder. It was an interest that the Altantian woman appreciated, for once there was something other than the harmful need to see everything as a source of prosperity and a wish to simply revel in the wonders of the natural world, which deserved more attention.

Her guard was raised by the scoff that came from the man, but she lowered her trident, choosing to lean on it instead, in a less threatening manner.
Would she tell Luther who she was? Or leave him in the dark? Glancing at her feet, Darya deliberated her answer, before finally looking back up and replying "Here to get you out of this mess."

Purposely evasive was much more her style.

Throwing a glance over her shoulder, Darya began to feel an unease from the congregation of jellyfish that now surrounded them and so, she decided it was time for them to make a move. Inhaling deeply, the Atlantian woman straightened her posture and nudged the Ramirez man's leg with her foot, gesturing he stand.
"We better get going, before they call in the others. Try to stay in the middle to avoid any stray stingers." Commanding as always, Darya waited for Luther to get to his feet, before heading in a seemingly random direction.
Well, it seemed random, but she knew exactly where she was going.
