farmer's daughter twenty tags: her family
the day was dark, the sun was covered by gray clouds, ready to pour their contents down on maria. she felt depressed, just like how the sky and clouds seemed to feel. the small woman laid in a field of tall green grass entangled with bright, beautiful wildflowers that let off a pleasant fragrance but couldn't help but make the young woman feel a deep pang of sorrow. she would be leaving this behind, her whole life would be shoved behind her any moment now. she sat up, looking back towards her small home that her father had built by hand. her younger siblings played outside, chasing their hens around the yard. her father was gone, just for the moment. he had gone to bargain with lord oslen, a noble who had offered them a deal. see, her father was deeply in debt and soon his farm would be taken away unless he could get at least one hundred and fifty coin. lord oslen had offered just that, one hundred and fifty coin in exchange for maria's hand in marriage to his son, faolan.

as the young lady looked out across the landscape behind her, she saw a large noble's cart being pulled down the long dirt road that lead for the city to their home and many other small farms by two proud, white stallions. she pushed herself to her feet and ran across the field, down the small hill and to her house so that she would be there when her father and the nobles made it to their small house. she ran into the wooden building, rummaging around until she found her kettle. she hung it onto an iron hook on the hearth before pouring water into the large pot. she then place ground tea leaves into the water, hoping that the tea would be ready by the time the cart made it to their home.

soon, the tea was ready. maria pour it daintily into four small tea cups, one for her, one for her father, and two for the lords. she heard the hoofstep of the stallions come to a halt in front of her house and soon the door was opened, her father and the two lords standing in the doorway.

faolan stared out the carriage window as they rode down what seemed to be an endless dirt road. despite it being barely midday, the thick cloud cover made it feel like evening. the gloomy day had caused the brunette to tire rather quickly, not that he ever had a great amount of energy, but usually he had enough to at least go out and ride horses with his sister, or help his mother in the garden. not today, however.
perhaps, faolan considered, it had nothing to do with the atmosphere that had him feeling gloomy, simply what the day had to hold. an arranged marriage was not what the young male considered especially ideal. however, given his reclusive nature, he assumed that his father believed an arrangement was probably the only way to ever get his eldest son to marry anyone, and never in his right mind would faolan disagree with his father. he was in no way frightened of him, of course, it was simply the truth, that it was likely faolan would never have married if not for an arrangement.
time seemed to pass while the lord gazed out across the endless fields of flowers, as when he was called back to conversation by he father, it appeared they had arrived at the tiny farm house. faolan was certain his father was in the process of giving him a lecture about being polite and respectful and how it was improper to look down on those less fortunate than them, but honestly, the twenty-four-year-old hadn't heard a single word out of his mouth. it wasn't as if he meant to disrespect his father, he just often got distracted. not to mention, he had heard the speech tenfold, and had it memorized word for word, and could probably recite it in his sleep.
stepping out of the carriage, the smell of rain hit him immediatly. the smell of rain didn't bother him, of course, it was simply the first thing he noticed. though the farm was small, it was obviously well kept. the recent drought had caused an unfortunate amount of people to have to sell their farming land due to and inability to produce a sufficient amount of crop. some of the small farmers had turned to ranching instead, as tending to animals relies less on the inpredictablilty of the rain.
faolan and his father approached the farmhouse following one mr. falk, who was the father of his bride to be. he'd met mr. falk once before when his mother had asked him to join at a town meeting many years back. he hadn't learned his name, of course, but the young lord wasn't one to forget a face. mr. falk opened the door which led into the farmhouse, the noblemen following loosely as to not intrude too greatly on personal space. faolan looked around the small farmhouse and was pleasantly surprised; it appeared much larger on the inside than it looked on the outside.

farmer's daughter twenty tags: her family
before the lords had arrive and, in fact, just after maria's father had left to speak with the lords. maria had begun her daily chores. they weren't called chores, of course. this wasn't side work to her. her whole life was taking care of her siblings. making sure they were fed, that they got good rest and that they were clean. she would miss them all dearly, all five of them. they were all special to her. there was albin, he was the oldest, around fifteen, and looked the most like their father. he had a strong face and dark hair and even darker eyes. after him there were elisabet and diana. they were twins and looked almost identical other than elisabet's dark eyes in comparison to diana's bright eyes. they were about twelve. following them were casper and kaja. they looked very similar and were the closest looking to their mother other than maria. casper was ten and kaja was eight. they both had dark hair and blue eyes. lastly, there was karina. she was only about six and had very light hair and light eyes. she looked very different from her other siblings. of course, maria could talk about her siblings all day because there was so much to tell but the only way she could sum them up was by saying how much she loved them all. she had written them a letter, one that she had left in their bedroom for them to find once she was gone.

she was extremely nervous to meet the lords, more so the younger who she would be betrothed to. she wondered what had driven elder lord olsen to seek anyone for his son's hand. most of the time, lords only married ladies. she wasn't a lady, she was a mere peasant. even worst, she was the daughter of a farmer who was in deep debt. no one would want to marry her, they had nothing to gain from her family other than her ability to produce children. maria took a deep breath. all she could hope was that her husband would be kind to her and that her father would be able to keep his farms with the one hundred and fifty coin that the lords would provide him with.

maria kept her head low when the three men enter her house. she curtsied to them. "lords olsen, it is a pleasure to meet you both," she said to them gently and softly, stealing a glance at them before looking back at her feet. she then rushed to the kitchen and began to mix what would become bread. her father escorted the lords to their table where the tea sat and they took a seat. "i hope you find my home to be welcoming, sirs," he said. "as you see, that is my oldest daughter, maria. she is very well at cooking and cleaning," he told them. "i am sure she would be a humble wife to you, sir," he said looking to faolan. they began to talk more as maria made her way to the hearth, starting to bake the bread. she then heard. "lords, when would you like to have maria delivered to your home? she can leave when ever you'd like, even today on your way back if you'd prefer it."

faolan looked around the small farmhouse quietly. it was obviously well kept, probably cleaned regularly. the male listened rather absently to the conversation between his father and the farmer. when the elder male's gaze was directed at him, he offered a slight nod, despite not actually hearing what he had asked, or told, or whatever had happened. he started listening a bit more after that, even though he really didn't care much about the present situation.

foalan was pulled out of his thoughts by his father's questioning gaze. obviously he had missed some vital part of the conversation and he immediately attempted to back track through everything he could remember. the last thing he could remember anyone of them saying was the farmer asking when they would like his daughter to arrive at the castle. after a moment of further confusion, the realization hit him that his father was requesting he decide how soon it should be that the girl arrived at the castle. the problem with this was that faolan actually did not care. "Uh...-" for a short moment, he fumbled with words, hoping for some help from his father, as he had not 'been prepared to actually have a choice. When he received nothing from his father, he just said the first thing that came to mind, "T-.. Today is fine... I guess..."

based on the disappointed look he got, faolan realized the answer was probably fine, but the way he said it probably wasn't. he could already imagine the lecture he would get about it later. something about confidence and him need to be more sure of himself and how no answer is the wrong answer when the person you're speaking to or about has no control over you. he almost sighed out loud when thinking of the arguments that would follow. of course, he didn't sigh because that was far too immature and he wasn't allowed to disrespect his parents like that or whatever.

farmer's daughter twenty tags: her family, the lords
the peasant girl started to knead the mixture in front of her as she listened to the men talking at the nearby table. she was a bit surprised when her father offered for her to leave today but she knew she couldn't have hard feelings and even if he did offer, she was sure that the lords wouldn't take her today. so many other farmers had to do the same to their daughters, she wasn't the only one. maria sprinkled some flour on the dough before listening again. she didn't really hear much other than her father talking about how much of a 'humble wife' she would be.

maria picked up the kneaded dough and moved it over to a pan to bake it in the heath. she walked over to her fireplace and gently laid the bread dough above the fire to bake it. she then walked over to a corner of the room. in the corner was a broom that she had crafted to help with her with her chores of cleaning the floor. she didn't really want to clean the outside of her home because she wanted to listen to their conversation but she needed to finish this up. she walked out of her back door and started to clean the cobblestone steps that led to a nearby lake where maria would draw water for her family. she finished up her cleaning and walked back inside.

maria's father was surprised to say the least when faolan said that he would want maria to be delivered to their home today, he hadn't expected it at all. "o-of course, m'lord, ill tell her to pack her things now," he said, bowing to him before rushing off to talk to maria. he took her to a room out of earshot. "maria, you need to pack your things, their taking you to their home today," he told her. maria's mother dropped. "o-okay," she said quiet before she rushed into her room, beginning to pack her small chest of clothes and small amount of valuable. her father walked back out of the room. "she's packing m'lords. she won't be long," he told them.

as the farmer pulled his daughter away to speak with her, faolan quietly waited for the scolding he was about to receive. needless to say, he was not disappointed. the first word out of his father's mouth was his name. it was said bitterly, almost scornful, even, and faolan then turned to face his father. "faolan!" mack hissed softly at his son, making sure they could not be heard, "you need to start acting your status, my boy. and things like that start by speaking like one. be confident in yourself and make decisions. no one here can tell you want to do but me, and if i give you permission to make a choice, you make the choice, understood?"

faolan stayed quiet as his father ranted, looking at him with the expression of someone who really did not care, because he didn't. when the time came for him to input, the brunette bowed slightly before replying with a firm, "yes sir," followed by a surprisingly honest, "i understand." he considered adding, 'i'll work on it' but figured that probably wouldn't go down too well, and his thoughts were interrupted as it was by the reappearence of the farmer.

at his words, faolan's father nodded in understanding, saying something about there being no need to rush, as they were in no hurry. after another brief discussion between the two men, mack excused himself outside so wait in the carriage, requesting with no words, only a hand gesture, that faolan joined him. the young male obeyed with ease, being used to his father not using words.

farmer's daughter twenty tags: her father, the lords
there wasn't much for maria to pack. the only things she owned were a few pairs of clothes and a necklace that her mother had given to her when she was young. those were the only possessions she was allowed to have. her father didn't give her many things because he didn't think it was right for a young woman, such as maria, to own property even if that just meant have more than one necklace or a nice outfit. of course, she didn't much blame him. her father was so in debt that he could hardly afford to buy seeds to plant. she hoped the best for her siblings, she had really been the only person they'd ever had who was close to a mother. she packed her things into a small chest that was about as big as a small crate used to carry chickens from their farm to the market.

the young woman walked out of her room with the small chest in her arms, her long dark brown hair lightly draping in front of her face. she wished she could shield herself from her fate like she could shield her eyes from these lords. "shall i see you off then, lords?" her father asked. maria didn't want to marry the lord but what choice did she have? she couldn't work the fields, she couldn't work in the village without keeping and ouch of dignity so the only way for her to serve her family was to marry up. she should be happy, after this marriage she would become lady maria and she would bring pride to her family. she felt the chest being taken from her hands as her father started out of their small house to the carriage.
