    ( A R R I E T T Y ! ! )

It was ridiculous of her to stay up so late. Just like she'd been doing ever since she was a teenager, Arrietty had stayed up until four am. And just like she'd been doing ever since she was a teenager, she was cursing herself for it. It wouldn't have been a big deal necessarily, but considering almost every night went like this, she didn't get much sleep. Still, it would be nearly impossible to break her habit by this point- why bother trying? Besides, she got a lot more done at night anyways. No doubt she'd be regretting this tomorrow, though.

Groaning softly to herself, she adjusted her grip on her purse as she made her way down the silent streets. It looked empty enough by now, but the young woman was in no mood to be robbed. Then again, it would be her own fault if she did- because she just had to have a cup of coffee, apparently. Huffing, she ran a hand through her disheveled hair that she'd left open and trailing down her shoulders, then opened the door to a small coffee shop she'd never tried out before. A bell jingled softly to announce her arrival and she walked inside, hands stuffed in hoodie pockets. There was only one other occupant, an elderly man sitting at the furthest table. She made her way to the counter and rubbed at the dark circles under her eyes.

"I'll take whatever has the most caffeine," she grumbled, too tired to bother looking up at the menu.

sɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ɪs ᴛʜᴇ sᴡᴇᴇᴛᴇsᴛ sᴏᴜɴᴅ | 🅡🅨🅝

The day had started out rather lackadaisically, churning out events at an extremely lethargic rate. Even though
Ryn had grown mildly accustom to the new routines of a more mundane life, sometimes the rush of energy in
his blood couldn't be sated by meditation or kicking back to some music. Energy for the guy didn't run in short
supply and was in fact a generous contributor to his ability to keep the shop safe and cleaned at nearly all hours
of the week. Any man needed sleep, but when nightmares plagued and ate away at what sweet dreams you'd
hoped to have, slumber wasn't always something to look forward to or participate in.

A regular had waltzed into the shop, his name was Edgar-- a stout elder whose hair was thinning and skin was
sprouting arbitrary age spots across his cheeks and arms. Gran had went out for the day in hopes of attending
the local beauty festival down the road on the corner of Baker street-- leaving the cafe in the very skilled and
capable hands of a Mr. Hatanaka. Eyes were fixated on the television, the thick scent of coffee beans and curry
hung heavy in the atmosphere of the little building-- it drew strangers in typically, but it must've been a rather
slow day.

The ring of a bell was all it took, causing the barista to turn his head and gaze at the incoming customer. A
young girl whose soft bags under her visionaries spoke to what she needed. Sharp jawline was further defined
as he clenched his teeth for a moment, only to pivot upon his heel and start on her drink. A double shot of
espresso stirred into a bit of dark roasted Italian blend would be a good combatant to the disease that was
fatigue. A dollop of cream and about a teaspoon full of a cinnamon and nutmeg fusion was carefully sprinkled
into the mug, creating a perfectly blond cup of joe. Politely did Ryn set down the cup and a container of cane
sugar in front of the blue haired belle, tipping his head in respect before taking a step back and folding his
arms firmly across his chest.

He hadn't seen her around before.

    ( A R R I E T T Y ! ! )

Arrietty raised an eyebrow halfheartedly as her vague request was fulfilled, steaming mug slid over the counter to her. Reaching for her wallet to pay, she lifted her gaze to more thoroughly examine the barista. He looked to be around her own age, with one eye a brilliant blue and the other a pale colour. She would've looked closer- was it blindness?- but didn't want to appear rude with her staring. Either way, she was almost certain there'd been something else to him when she caught his gaze- some sort of vibe she hadn't gotten from another kalon before. Shrugging it off, she tried to remember what the price for the drink had been. She'd had one before, hadn't she? This lack of sleep was really getting to her. Shaking her head slightly, she removed the correct amount of money from her wallet and handed it to the man, the cup warming her as she wrapped her hands around it.

"Thank you," she said at last, shuffling over to a small, round table right near the counter ad pulling out the chair with her foot. She flopped down with a long sigh and took out her phone, a notification lighting up the screen. Another donation from her blog- that was good. Her books were slowly gaining popularity, but the money she did manage to scrape in through the internet never hurt.

Whilst she took the time to look him up and down, Ryn exchanged a similar routine of observing her appearance
with a sense of both care and dignity. She was beautiful, her hair was a pale cerulean hue that brought out the
vibrancy of her irises-- but she also looked extremely exhausted. With cash set upon the counter the man
delicately plucked it from the granite and slipped it into the register homed beneath the counter.

"You're welcome." The ebony locked male responded, leaning his weight against the back-most shelf and focusing
back on the target of intrigue that was the T.V. For a moment, a soft lull veiled over the java bar.

Arrietty set her phone aside and took a sip of the drink, feeling it warm her from the inside out. Rubbing at her eyes again, she let her gaze wander around the homey-looking shop, fixating on the tv and then trailing off again. She let out a soft sigh, tapping her fingers against the tabletop for a moment. It was at night when she got lonely-felt the urge to talk to others. Ordinarily, she would've minded her own business, but the solitude was eating her up. And making small talk with this person would almost definitely be better than trying to befriend the old man in the corner. Finally, she rested an arm on the back of her chair, turning slightly to face the barista.

"Is it always so quiet this late or is it just a slow day?" The words were said casually, rolling off her tongue as though she couldn't care less whether or not she answered him, but there was a secret hope in her that he would take notice. She had cooped herself inside all day with no contact whatsoever, and was dying for someone to talk to.

Her voice was a sweet hymn that had cut through the static white noise that the media had become. It drew the eyes
of Ryn in, making her his new focal point from the moment her sentence had run its course. Inhaling softly did the
coffee maker cast a gaze outside as clouds began to gather above.

"There's a beauty festival happening right on the corner of Baker, a lot of the local regulars are over there with the
owner of this shop.
" A brief interval of silence was offered as he contemplated the question a bit further, letting his
lids veil over captivating eyes before he'd enlighten her a bit more. "The shop really relies on the local interest to
remain open, we get a lot of tourists when the festival is around who just walk past us because of the coffee chain
down the street about a block. When an event like this is going on, we suffer pretty badly.
" Opening his visionaries
he looked back to the dame, rolling his shoulders for comfort's sake just as he turned and checked the pot of curry
being made. Its delicious smell wafted into the air heavier than before, and caused the old man to look up
immediately.

"Hey Ryn, can I get a plate of that?" He casually inquired. To which the cook smiled so gently-- it could hardly be
noticed.

"Of course." After a few spoonfuls of white rice had been shoveled onto the dish along with a hefty serving of
the curry, the barista turned and looked to the girl and begged the question of his own whilst he walked the meal
over to the elder. "You don't sleep a lot, do you?"

Arrietty nodded absently as he spoke, discussing the event and such matters. She honestly didn't really care about any of it, but it was nice to have someone talking to her after a full day of solitude. She spun her coffee cup slowly on the table as the topic changed to other matters, namely, the curry he'd prepared. It smelled wonderful, but she had a slow metabolism and didn't eat much-a meal and a small snack would suffice her for an entire day. She remained silent as the male served it out to the elderly man, asking her a question over his shoulder.

She let out a short, one-syllable laugh, settling back in her chair. "It's that obvious, hm?" Figuring her answer was discernible enough despite it being only vague and somewhat rhetorical, she raised the mug to her lips and took a sip, setting it down again. "You seem pretty accustomed to being awake at this hour yourself."
