generations ago lived two siblings, fern and ebony. they were owned by housefolk, but one day the
ir housefolk left and never returned. this led fern and ebony to be on their own. the two journeyed
into the forest, looking for their forever home. they traveled into a valley, where they followed the
stream that cut the valley in half. they came across one spot in particular, where the stream had ro
cks in it, making it easy to cross over. they began to cross over from the open land into the dense f
orest, when they stopped in the middle of the stream. fern realized that she would rather have her
home in the open, where the trees were very thin and the reeds spread nearly everywhere. ebony,
however, wished to live in the dense, shadowy trees where the sun didn't seem to shine. he and fer
n fought over where to live. in the end, the two split ways, making their own groups to live with. e
bonyclan and fernclan.

ever since, the clans have had some hostility towards one another. however, just as clan tradition g
oes, the two still have clan gatherings, where they come in peace with one another and talk about
what has been going on with their clan. however, the night before a gathering, the deputy of both
clans were found murdered in the middle of the stream. some may take this as a threat from the oth
er clan, but the medicine cats and some of the others from the clan think it is a sign that the two m
ust get along. tensions are rising between the clans, and they must figure out what will happen bet
ween them.

xxxxthe vivid image of the feathery ginger coat mixed with water and blood stained the tabbys mind as he jumped down from the gathering rock. it was a full moon, thus the two clans had a gathering. however, in the middle of the gathering, clouds flooded over the moon, and it began to pour, ending the gathering. as hailstars paws hit the ground, he turned his eyes towards his cats, who were uncharacteristically sitting in their own group instead of intermingling. he motioned with his wide head that they were leaving, and he watched them through the pouring rain as they stood up and began to approach him. hailstar twitched his drenched whiskers in greeting to them all, before turning tail and exiting the clearing. he slowed his pace to walk besides his brother, stormheart. hew knew it was the right choice to appoint him as his deputy, it was something they always joked about in kithood. one would play the leader, and always appoint the other as the deputy. it was more than a joke, it was a dream.
xxxxhailstar turned his muzzle towards stormheart so the other tom could hear him over the pouring rain. "i wonder if this storm is a sign from starclan," he meowed, loud enough for his brother to hear. he turned his head back forwards as they trekked through the forest. ever since the death of reedwhisker, things had been frisky with ebonyclan, there was no denying that. and it showed tonight at the gathering. fernclan cats sat across the clearing from ebonyclan cats, and even he and thistlestar sat a good distance away from one another on the rock. hailstar flattened his ears against his skull, his paws suddenly feeling very heavy. that was no way to act as a leader. he was supposed to be setting an example for his clanmates to follow - but how could he? even starclan called off the gathering, there had to be a reason. he padded along in silence for the rest of the trek home, entering fernclans camp through the tunnel of gorse.

xxxxthe pale she-cat flattened her ears as a raindrop hit her right between the ears. she turned her head to look upwards, before looking back at thistlestar and hailstar. they glanced at each other, and then both silently jumped from the rock, beckoning for their clans to head out. fawnleap stood, shaking out her short pelt before quickly following along behind her clanmates as they began to flood from the clearing. she found herself in step besides a cat she knew from kit-hood, fallowmask. the two grew up together and trained together, so it was no question they were friends. fawnstep remained quiet, flicking her tail behind her as she glanced around the dark territory. she then lifted her head slightly to glance towards the front of the clan, where she spotted thistlestar and her former mentor, lightningtail. the two were padding along, and fawnstep couldn't help but wonder what was going on within their heads. frowning, fawnstep turned to fallowmask. "i wonder why starclan put clouds infront of the moon." she pondered aimlessly, wondering what her friend would think.

XXXTo be honest, Stormheart had not been watching or listening to the leaders at the gathering. He had taken a spot at the front of the Fernclan cats. At one point before the gathering truly started he had tried to speak to Lightningtail but the tense state caused him to stay back from speaking to the other deputy. As soft clouds billowed overhead, he had kept his green eyes up to the moon. The threat of the clouds was as fierce as a snake bite and he wasn’t surprised when they finally covered the moon entirely and let out the pent up rain. The murder of the deputies had angered Starclan greatly for them to send such a downpour. The leaders glanced at each other before jumping off the rock; Hailstar gathered the clan. Being in front, it was easy for the small tom to quickly follow his brother. He decided to not stay too close, only back a half-step, until he heard the other speak then he moved to be beside Hailstar.
XXX“I was just thinking the same,” Stormheart replied, flicking rain off his whiskers periodically, “Perhaps they’re warning us about the murderer, or murderers, of Reedfeather and Cherrytail.” He paused a moment in thought, “or even what happened between the pair. I can’t see Reedfeather killing Cherrytail unless it was self defense and while I never really spoke to Cherrytail, only at a few gatherings, I’m not sure she would either. They were good warriors, I still can’t believe a cat would do such a thing as this, it’s awful.” By now, Stormheart’s thick pelt was plastered to his skin, just showing how small the tom was and right now he truly felt small thinking of his lost friend again.

XXXPearlpaw usually enjoyed going to gatherings. Pebbletail, her late brother, used to introduce her to friends he had in Fernclan and she herself could meet others from their neighbors as well. She had always tried to find the other apprentices and speak to them, just to know other cats her age. Though this gathering, she didn’t slink through to crowd to find Loudpaw, Lionpaw, or Sunpaw (though she did look for them). It was tense to say the least. Especially once the storm came; Fernclan was first to leave, and they did quickly. As her own clan left, Pearlpaw hurried after her clan. She was going to hurry and catch up to her mentor but instead fell into step beside the other Ebonyclan apprentice, Thunder.
XXXShe stayed quiet as they left the gathering area but once they were clear, Pearlpaw flicked her tail at her and meowed, “What a dreadful gathering that was, huh?” Her voice was calm but her eyes showed that she was worried. “I suppose Starclan’s mad about Cherrytail and Reed- uh, Reedfeather? I think that’s what his name was. Anyway, they’re probably mad about their deaths. Er, what do you think?” Pearlpaw looked at Thunder, her good ear open to whatever the other apprentice had to say.

thunder's intense golden visionaries were torn away from the handsome, feathery white and orange tom. her vocals, despite her tense segments and harsh glare, were smooth and sweet as honey-comb. she portrayed more age than that which she had lived, giving her conveying thoughts a careful deliberation, reluctantly shooting one last dismayed look towards fernclan's 'paw. "if they're angry, a clan-cat has done this." she commented quietly, before adding with an anguished glaze over her orbs. "and they must have been at the gathering. her diminutive paws splattered a puddle that had formed because of the light rain-fall, and she flicked it outwards, accidentally spattering pearlpaw. choking down an amused purr, she apologized with a shrug of her lean shoulders. her height difference over the younger she-cat was distinct, and manifested itself within the flame-colored thunder's long legs. with a lash of her lengthy tail, she pinned her ears against her cranium. "they will pay." she found herself murmuring, though her deliberations were not on the murders of reedfeather and cherrytail. instead, the tom flashed in her thoughts once more. he will, anyways.

observing starclan's anger made the adolescent tom gaze up at the now covered stars hopelessly. he wondered if his ancestors were lost to them forever. shaking his crown solemnly, he returned his visors to the separate and distance clans. no one mingled, and before long, the moon disappeared under a wreath of heavy clouds. from his small position underneath the tall rocks where the leader's held ceremony, he felt further from starclan than he ever had. he watched hailstar rose to his mitts and signaled the end of the gathering. waving his long tassel slowly towards mottledleaf, disappointed he had no time to ponder or share tongues with his fellow medicine cat. though he was the only medicine cat apprentice, sunpaw felt an attachment to the calico tom. he wondered if he was saying goodbye to starclan as well.
