It was a warm day at sea, though not unpleasantly so. The sun shone brightly, providing natural heat, however the gentle, cool breezes of the sea settled the temperature, preventing humidity from setting in.
Standing in the bow of the ship, Lukas Salathiel looked to be rather calm, an arm resting on the side of the ship as he took in the soft breezes, amplified by the ship's movement. Before him, a brilliant expanse of blue lay, with only the smallest speck of land in sight.
"Oi, Sala! You see that?" It was Jonathan Thornton that disrupted Lukas' perfect composure. Upon his call, Lukas turned to meet the gaze of his crewmate, situated across the bow from him.
"Land? Yes, I do," Lukas responded in an even, measured tone, before looking back out to sea.
"You want to tell the captain, or should I?"
"Whatever you'd like, Thornton," Lukas responded in a rather tired tone. He was particularly fond of this Jonathan Thornton, though he was able to keep any negative convictions from his voice.
As Thornton rushed from the bow off to the main deck of the ship, Lukas found himself left once more in a calm, peaceful silence, for which he was quite thankful. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy the company of others - he actually appreciated it greatly - however over the past few days, he had managed little sleep, in a particularly vicious storm.
As the speck of land grew larger, into a visible, small island, Lukas turned his attention more closely to the shore. It was often that they would find intriguing things along the shores of such islands - from old shipwrecks to bone beds of slaughtered crews. This time, however, it appeared that nothing of particular value or interest was to be found on the shore.
"Ey, Sala," Markus Kingsley, another crewmate of Lukas', greeted him casually as he made his way swiftly up onto the deck of the bow, "We're bringin' 'er around the island, just to check for anything that could be promising on the shore."
"Standard protocol, then," Lukas replied with a nod, giving his crewmate a short glance before turning his attention back to the island.
Kingsley said nothing more, giving a mere grunt of agreement.
The two stood in silence for several minutes as the island drew nearer. It was rather simple - sandy beaches covered most of its shores, with cliffs dominating a small stretch of the north-west side. The interior of the island was covered mostly by a large, tropical forest, rather level in elevation, however this forest was dotted with higher areas of sparser vegetation, resembling a highland climate.
It was as Lukas looked back to the shore that something out of place came into his sight. A distinct blob on the sand, that, as they drew closer, became clear as a sprawled female figure.
"That's... That's a... I's a woman!" Thornton struggled to find his words, joining Lukas and Kingsley on the bow once more.
"Very observant, Thornton. Notify the captain, please," Lukas responded, leaning over the bow in an attempt to get a better view of the girl.
"Right here, Sala!"
Tomas Newton, the respected captain of the ship, joined the party quickly, having cast off the helm to his second in command.
"Ah, Captain, there's someone stranded on the shore. I'll get my basic medical supplies ready while you bring us in," Lukas responded, turning to face the captain and gesturing past him towards the lower decks of the ship, where he immediately started towards.
"Stop, Sala." The Captain extended an arm to block Lukas' path, receiving a confused glance from his subordinate, "We won't be going in. We're already a week behind our scheduled arrival time, even following standard protocol is against my better instincts. We don't have time to stop right now."
Lukas stared at the Captain for a moment, incredulous.
"What the hell, Captain?! No, you don't just leave someone to die! Have a little humanity and think for a second! That is an actual human life on that shore, and our destination? We're not even meeting anyone there! It can wait!" Lukas insisted, raising his tone slightly as his stance shifted into a rather strong, stubborn one.
"No, it can't, Sala. That girl can. We can come back for her later, if you really insist upon it."
"No, she can't! She'll die! I'm sorry, Captain, but I can't let you abandon her."
"Oh, really, Sala? You can't? You can't?"
"No, I can't. First, do no harm. And by abandoning a helpless, likely death-bound human being on the beach, I am most certainly doing harm."
"Forget about your code, Sala. This is a pirate's life. Our purpose is to do harm!"
"Well, to hell with our purpose! My purpose is to protect the inhabitants of this world! Now, before I jump in the water myself, bring this ship in!"
"I am the captain of this ship, Sala, and I deliver the orders, I do not take them! Now, go make yourself instead of standing here defying your captain."
"Sorry, Captain. I truly do respect you, but you're making it awfully hard for me to show it right now."
With that final quip, Lukas shed his heavy brown trenchcoat and ran to the side of the ship. Hoisting himself onto the railing, he hesitated for only a moment before pushing himself into the air, his form molding into a streamlined diving stance from years of experience.
"Bloody hell, Sala! You idiot!"
Lukas failed to hear his Captain's remark as he breached the surface of the water, the splash of his impact blocking out any other noise.
He was lucky, Lukas realized as he came to his senses, that it was a calm day. If it hadn't been, he wasn't sure he could've fought the waves to shore. However, given the calm, ideal conditions at sea, he made his way to the shore of the island rather easily.
Dragging himself out of the water, drenched, Lukas took a moment to scan the shore, before locating the girl.
"Hey! Are you alright?" Lukas took towards the girl at a steady jog, ignoring the cries from his crewmates for him to return to the ship.
