the commander let out a sigh when the door of the lift closed and they began to ascend the tall tower. the past days had been almost too much for her. nadezhda didn't think she'd last much longer without rest. she began to feel the burning pain from fighting, walking and riding spread across her body. she stepped off of the lift with octavia and walked into the washroom. she started to clean off the wounds from fighting and washed off her face. she started to bandage herself up.

Octavia walked off the lift and turned the other direction to enter her own quarters. Fatigue and angry wounds compelled her to flop onto her bed and sleep for days, but she knew she couldn't climb into bed with days of dirt caked on her. Taking the pot of boiling water that someone put over the fire in the hall, she brought it into her water closet and filled the small tub with it. Grabbing the soap, she stripped and got inside, continuing to wash the grime off. Her cuts stung and the water turned red from the blood of their battles but it was all so relaxing. Dozing off for a few moments, she awoke when the water was cold and got herself out and ready to sleep.

once her wounds were clean, nadezhda decided to clean the rest of her body. she walked out of the washroom and asked a few of her servants to fill her tub. the commander laid on her bed for a bit, thinking about what had happened in a day. mostly, she wondered what had happened while she was captured. she had given herself up to the queen to save octavia and she had thought that the girl might have been killed anyways. that was why she had finally poured her emotions out, why she had finally kissed her. "heda," a servant said hesitantly. nadezhda nodded before opening her eyes. she walked into her room and closed the door behind her. she quickly stripped and dipped her toe into the warm water. nadezhda slipped into the waters and closed her eyes, drifting off into a light slumber.

Octavia should have had her wounds tended to, but the fatigue and warmth commanded her back to the bed. As much as she wanted to plunge under the furs, she still felt uneasy. Pulling her dagger from her discarded clothing, she placed it on the under shelf of her nightstand and pulled the furs back to climb in. As much as the heat and the softness commanded her to sleep, her mind jumped into overdrive. The kiss, seeing Nadezhda alive, and the adrenaline of battle all came flooding back almost in an intrusive way. She laid there as it all replayed out and she was left with contorted feelings of relief, fear, and what must have been some aspect of love. She wanted to think about it more but found her body shutting down and pulling her into sleep, letting her dreams decide.

the last night had been a blur. she knew she had fallen asleep in her tub but when she woke up, nadezhda found her in herself in the middle of her cool sheets, fully clothed, thankfully. she guessed she had unconsciously done all of this. she pushed herself out of her bed, feeling all of the muscles ache in her body as she hobbled over to her dresser. she pulled out her ceremonial dress, slipped it on and then put her sheath, with sword still in it, around her shoulder. today was they day. she would announce the death of the azgeda queen and the promotion of octavia from her second, to one of her personal warriors. she walked out of her room. "light the ceremonial fire," she told two servants who were standing outside of her door. they bowed slightly and then ran to light the fire.

The commotion outside was what stirred her awake from her tumultuous dreams. Feeling like she barely slept, she stood out of her sheets and stretched, working at all the kinks and aches that complained. She turned when she saw a young girl around her age slip into the room and greet her.
"I'm here to help you prepare for the ceremony," she audibly mumbled, "did you need a bath?"
A little stunned, she looked herself over to see if she missed anything last night, "I guess I could use a proper one. My wash last night was a little sloppy."
"Of course," she said as she approached the bathroom, "I'll draw the water while you pick what to wear. It's ceremonial dress code."
Octavia acquiesced and had her things all laid out. She let her prepare her and finally lay the finishing touches on to finalize her outfit. She was ready.

the commander watched as her servant scurried off to light the fire. warriors from every clan would be here soon to listen to her. she took a deep breath, thinking of what she would say. "gon azplana em stedaun(the azgeda queen is dead)," she whispered to herself. she had to be ready to improvise if anything happened. no amount of training could have prepared her for that part of being the commander. she heard footsteps behind her. "heda, im here to do your hair," she heard someone behind her say. she turned around a saw a small servant girl. she nodded. "thank you," she said before she walked into her room, stilling down on a chair so the servant girl could weave intricate braids into her long brown hair.

She was about to stand when the servant's hand fell on her shoulder to keep her in her seat. She checked the mirror one more time and saw a clean reflection looking back; what more could she need?
"Someone will be in to address your hair," the servant noted before giving her a respectful nod and exiting her room. Now alone with only her thoughts, she let her mind run wild.
A gentle rap on the door cleared her daydreams and rosy blush and she allowed the person to enter. A young child, with nimble fingers and a step stool, clambered up behind her and began to address her newly cleaned hair.

it hadn't taken the servant long to finish braiding her long brown hair. "thank you, ill be on my way out now, you may join the others to break your fast," she told her. she watched the girl bow to her before scurrying off. she walked into her bathroom to do on final touch. she pulled out a jar of watered down charcoal and dipped the tips of the fingers of both of her hands in the jar. she looked in the broken mirror before smearing it onto her eyes. "ai laik chit heda, ai laik gon op chit heda,"(i am the commander, i fight like the commander) she growled to herself. she was ready. her heart was beating at a million miles a minute as she walked towards her door. her hand hesitated to turn the handle but she, reluctantly, did.

The small servant girl stood and weaved intricate braid into her hair for what seemed like hours. The dark strands managed to knit and stay together without much struggle as she tied and placed them strategically on her head. Larger ones held smaller ones at bay and tied behind her head in one large knot. Finally, a three medium sized strands were curled around in a circlet as if to represent a crown of her own hair. The young girl seemed quite satisfied with her work before stepping down and leaving again.
She inspected the work in the mirror as she stood there; a stark contrast from the haggard warrior who entered this room only twelve hours prior. Now well-groomed and well-dressed, she felt a little more confidence in the day. Not wanting to take any risks though, she returned to her nightstand and retrieved the dagger from its hutch, placing it in a secluded notch belt beneath a slip in her dress. Waiting for her cue, she stood and waited until one of the guards came to fetch her.
