Birds of the Rainforest

Apaches anger snapped and she dove into the hallow and pushed Devlin against the wall. "Note and Vibrant are my family! The whole flock, Geranium, violet, Flara, who you probably already ate, are my family. Monkeys, lizards and carrion are the perfect diet for me and can be for you! If you'd open your eyes, you could see just how attached to you i am and how much I don't want to kill you!!!" she yelled.

Note nuzzled Vibe and thanked him in a singsong voice, before eating what she needed.

Doriel giggled. "You will learn. The more you stay at the Canopy, the more you'll learn to hunt rather than scavenge."

"Aggh!" Devlin winced, as he was slammed against the wooden wall behind his back, through the thick vines his prison was made of, as the much larger bird of prey pushed him backwards. He blinked, looking into her eyes, hoping to gain even the slightest inkling of understanding. "Oh, so the other animals of this forest don't get to be under your deserving umbrella of protection?" He questioned, trying to wriggle out of Apache's claws which pinned him, but had little success. After a brief struggle beneath her grasp, he sighed, and met her gaze again, confused by her next words. "You're...attached to me?" He said, almost laughing. He just couldn't believe this.


Vibrant sat back and watched her eat, wanting to make sure she got her fill before he indulged. As he sat there, watching her, a smile lit his beak. "You are beautiful."


Cameo shrugged, smiling back at her. However, he refrained from eating, waiting for invitation. He would hate to impose or be rude, as Doriel's guest.

Apache growl-chirped. Then let him go, moving the vines out of the way. "Get out of here while you can. And stay away!" she said.

Nite blushed. "Oh.. thank you, my love. You are handsome..." she said.

Doriel looked at Cameo. "Go ahead, dont wait for me." she chirped.

Devlin cocked his head, fluffing his feathers, and then stared curiously at her with one bright, beady eye. "Just like that? You're letting me go?" He shook his head, straightening his wing before extending them for flight. He took one last glance at Apache, with perhaps the slightest hint of regret in his eyes. Then, with small huff, he took off, flying into the canopy. His figure grew smaller and smaller, and then his shape disappeared into the leaves of the canopy.


He laughed. "Thanks love." Vibrant replied, nuzzling her. "I know." He added with a smirk. "Nite..." He murmured, staring into space. "Have you thought of any name ideas?" He asked, turning to face her. He was regarding their soon to be hatched chicks.


Cameo smiled gently. "I'd love to share a meal with you, but as a gentleman, I cannot eat until the lady takes a bite first." He offered, gesturing toward the feast. "Please humor me." He added, with a grin.

Apache nodded and watched Devlin go, shedding a tear. Maybe one day he'd return, changed.

Nite thought a moment. "No, but that can wait till they hatch." she cooed happily.

Doriel nodded and began to eat, watching Cameo, thoughts racing.

Devlin flew for over ten minutes straight, wanting to get as far away from Apache's lair as he could. When he finally started to feel it in his wings, he settled on the first branch he saw, pulling his wings close. A frown was on his beak, as he sat there, Pondering all that had happened in the previous 48 hours. He sighed, feeling a drop his feathers. Never fails. He thought, doing a quick fluff. The rainforest is actually quite the dreary place to live.


Vibrant nodded, wrapping a wing around her, beginning to eat. Though he didn't say, he didn't quite agree. Excitement was filling his body, and was already running names through his mind.


Cameo waited a couple seconds, and then also began to indulge, flashing her a sweet smile. (wb, sorry)

Nite smiled at Vibrant. "Raven..... Isn't that a beautiful name?" she said.

Apache bowed her head in sadness. She couldn't believe that she liked the most evil of the birds.

Doriel smiled and soon finished her meal.

Geranium was preening his feathers, watching his daughter silently.

Vibrant's head tilted, and he gave a slight nod. It was a lovely name, he knew it was a species of bird, but he wasn't sure what they looked like. Having never seen one, it was quite hard to picture. All he knew was that their feathers were the shade of ebony. "I love it." He assured his mate, smiling. "But, I must admit, I've never met a raven." He said simply, settling down beside her. "Have you?"


Devlin scooted further down the branch, closer to the trunk of the tree, for there he was more sheltered from the downpour of rain. He pulled his wings as close as he could, blinking as drops of water bounced off his beak. He shivered, and then turned his around tucking it into his feathers, soon falling asleep.


After he had finished, Cameo stepped back and began to preen for a few minutes. When he was through, he turned to Doriel, a nervous smile on his face. "Um, hey, do you know if there's any nearby hollows 'round here that are vacant? I may need some place to crash and I ain't used to all this rain..." He mumbled, not wanting to overstay his welcome.


Violet mumbled some gibberish in her sleep, and instinctively wormed her way up against her adoptive father, snuggling into his plumage with a contented sigh.

Nite shook her head. "No.... But... They are black birds... There's two in our jungle." she said.
(In thinking Nites stroke has unlocked the ability for her to see what no other has.)

Doriel giggled. "Stay in this hallow,and when the rain lets up, ill take you to an Eagle that will know."

Geranium smiled. "Violet. Time to wake up honey."

(Cool! Maybe she could foresee something terrible happening to Devlin and then she could tell Apache and Apache could save him from certain death. But he'd still be on death's doorstep for a few days.)

Vibrant smiled. "They sound like beautiful birds, I'd love to meet one someday." He spoke softly, assuming Nite had just heard from someone else that there were two ravens around these parts. News did tend to travel fast here.


Cameo grinned, clearly pleased with her invitation to stay. "Well, if you insist." He replied, peeking out to look at the rain. "Is it always like this?" The male asked, casting a glance back toward her.


Violet stirred, lifting her head with a few sleepy mumbles. "Morning already, daddyyyyy..." She trailed off, yawning.
