High school for the arts

I quietly did the work that was assigned to us during class. I glanced over at Eric every once in a while, wondering why he was so tired. When class was over, I stood up, saying, "okay. Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I grabbed you some food since you didn't get to eat breakfast." I handed him the apple and granola bar. As we started walking, I asked him, "so why didn't you get enough sleep last night?"

Eric looked at her and took the apple and granola bar. "Thanks. I appreciate that. I am okay. My parents called me. They are in Japan right now so the time difference made it difficult to talk. They talked to me for four hours." He said to her as he walked with her.

"Of course, I couldn't have you skipping breakfast," I say, listening as he says about his parents calling. I wait for him to tell me about what they talked about, but when he doesn't say anything, I decide to ask. "Well? What did they talk to you about? Do they believe that you broke up with me?"

"Yes they believed it but at the same time, they do not see allowing me back into their home anytime soon. They will allow me to stay here next year but I have to pay for part of my tuition and it is a loan from them. They are not happy that I disobeyed them and they say that now I have to pay for it." He said to her. He sighed and kept walking. "It is fine though. At least I can stay at the school and I will do my best to get scholarship money and will hopefully soon have enough money to move out of your house. I know your parents and little sister are tired of me and I really had not meant to have to stay this long. If they want me out, I can go." He said to her. "I will figure something out." He said.

I didn't understand why his parents were doing this. He couldn't go to this school or live in their house just because he had been dating me? I had met his parents, and of course I knew they didn't like me or my parents, but didn't they care about their son's happiness? Now he did what they wanted he 'broke up with me' but he still had to pay for school? It was frustrating. "It's not fine, you shouldn't have to deal with any of this. My parents feel the same way about it, that's why they're letting you stay as long as you need. And my sister can learn to deal with it. She doesn't know what's going on in your life. If she did, then I'm sure she'd want you to stay too."

Eric looked at her. He gave her a small smile. "I am really glad that your family seems to like me enough to be okay with it but I still feel bad. I don't like that I can't give them their space back but I did find a guy who said he might rent me out a space in his house for pretty cheep until I can get my own apartment." He said to her. "So I have to go look at that tonight and then I might be able to get out of your house. It will be fine. I don't want to make anyone feel like I am not trying." He said to her.

I let out a sigh, knowing that he was right. It was probably best if he could find somewhere else to stay, even if I didn’t like the idea of it. I’m sure my parents would be happy that he was staying somewhere else, but they didn’t act like it bothered them. Then again, I guess they knew that he had nowhere else to stay, but now, he might. “Okay,” I say to him. “If you think it’s going to be fine, then I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

"Ya. We will see what happens." He said to her. He kissed her forehead. "I really am trying but I still feel like most people do not feel like I am." He said to her with a shrug. He looked down at his hands. "I am not sure if it will work out with the guy but I am going to try my best. He is very particular and very hard to live with, but I will do my best." He said to her. He looked as the teacher started to speak.
