Gingko slammed the glass down on the table, then rose to her feet. "That's not how the charm breaks. Two of the Garde have to meet up, that's the only way," she said unhappily. "So, yes. It is time to unite." That was her family Amber was talking about. Gingko didn't want any of them to die, as much as she didn't want Amber to die. Everything she did was to protect her. Her temper only grew when some tumultuous noise sounded from outside. Her first thought was teenagers before she realized it was coming from above.
"They're here," she hissed under her breath. She allowed Amber to keep Gingko's spear, then the Cepan grabbed two large kitchen knives. "We have to get out of here before they notice," she said, even angrier as she reached for the back doorknob. If any idiot showed up looking for Amber, they would get a piece of Gingko's mind.
In their eye.
Icaron was still aboard the Acacia ship, monitoring the progress of his more senior hunting parties. He barely had to keep an eye on Rori's Brigade, they were just that competent. Suddenly an unpleasant noise interrupted the transmission, and Rori's radio cut off with a sound that didn't seem very good. "What is this?" Icaron demanded. Displeased, he turned to his colleagues. "Please leave this room," he ordered sternly, and watched with an impatient glare as the other Mogadorians evacuated the monitoring room.
Icaron temporarily severed all the connections, then waited for Rori's status to come back online. When nothing changed, he began to grow worried. He opened one monitor and replayed the final moments of transmission, but all he could see was panic and was that an engine burning out in the distance? This wouldn't do; this was definitely not happening. Icaron picked up the phone and paged her himself.
"Is everything alright?" he demanded, though he was shouting at a dial tone. "Pick up, dammit! You can't do this to me, you can't just-" his voice broke, and he struggled to keep it steady.
He did not succeed.
"Rori," he whispered, "please."
Apricot took a deep, shaky breath. "Thanks, mom," she muttered grudgingly. Though her voice was as hostile as always, her dark eyes betrayed her sincere gratitude. "Yeah, let's," she agreed with a familiar gleam of violence in her gaze. "The Sam kid seems pretty tough. We will kick some Mogadorian," she proceeded to say swear words for 'rear end' in seven different languages, "and I'll mount Icaron Matthias' head on my bedroom wall!"
Her sinister smile was back and she clapped her hands evilly before running upstairs. But after a second, she walked back down. "I hate you," she told Esme fondly, before walking back up the flight of stairs.
Maple sprinted right into the middle of the city. The Mogadorians did not follow, knowing they couldn't give themselves away, couldn't show the humans that they were murderers. Maple hid in a library, watching the three split up. They were circling around the city's perimeter, one going around each side to try to intercept her at the other end. Bad idea. Maple calculated when the Mogadorians would be at the far other side of the city, and at that very point, she ran back the way she came. Unfortunately she forgot about the third soldier, who raised his sword in a threat.
"No thanks," Maple declined before snapping his neck and taking his sword.
She kept running.
Erin, where are you? she demanded. But she soon found she didn't need to ask. After Erin had communicated with her, Maple could almost feel her mind's presence, and she ran in that very direction. Try to get to the airport. We'll steal some tickets and board the plane. No, don't be guilty. We're going to be saving their planet so three tickets will just count as their advance payment, she said mentally.
