Welcome, all, to the medieval world of Plexus. The founders hath intended to name it Pleus, for t'was thought that sounds kinda cool and semi-roman-y, but alas the dreaded Automus Correctos made it Plexus. So. Welcome to the Medieval world that is named after a system of veins and arteries. For I wish not to fight Automus every time I write this out.
Oh, Lord, I need a hobby.
Anyhoozie.
This is Plexus, a scantly inhabited medieval world that knows only one continent and a plethora of islands, none farther than one hundred miles from the coast, and many of which are volcanic. The rulers of this world dwell in two separate kingdoms that are divided from each other in the middle of the continent by a tall but narrow mountain range called the Tusks. The capital of each kingdom is as far as possible from that of the other, and the farther from each capital city you get- and the closer to the Tusks- the less patriotism is displayed. In fact, hardly anybody along the mountainous center line of the kingdoms even knows to which they belong: Mora, to the north, or Kar, to the south. Trading there is free and nationality is given very little thought. However, with little to no concern for nationality, there is also little to no concern for the law, as neither kingdom really enforces their own laws on the dangerous and distant Tusks. This has allowed a huge uprising of black markets, as well as a large population of wrong-doers and other "unwanteds" of society. When a criminal is banished from either kingdom, they rarely travel farther than the Tusks.
The inhabitants of Plexus are of a unique variety. While a majority of these people are just your basic human beings, for others size, shape, and color ranges from three to eight feet tall, aquatic to land dwelling to gifted with flight, and to any shade that can be found in nature. Those with these abnormal attributes all share one thing in common: tattoos. It's the tattoos that allow them to change their appearance, as well as (in more gifted cases) the world around them. The more bewitched ink one has, the more power. Most of those with powers are born with the tattoos, as after childhood comes to a close it becomes very dangerous- life threatening, even- to attempt to add ink to a body that is unfamiliar with magic. Two marked parents are likely to produce a marked child. Once the body has accepted magic, it will likely accept more ink, it's just a matter of finding an "artist" with the right skill set- who knows the right designs- and who can be afforded.
Unfortunately, as is the case when anybody has something that somebody else finds threatening, there are those who wish to destroy it. Once a movement that was localized only to the eastern most end of the Tusks, the self titled "purists" have now begun to infiltrate much of the mountain range, even slowly creeping through some of the kingdoms.
Obviously, they are antagonists.
So, those who wish to avoid being purged have a few options:
1. Go into hiding, or just hide your ink, assuming you haven't already been marked with appearance altering designs such as non-retractable wings or purple skin.
2. Some how get enough ink that you really don't have to worry about attackers, but there are few who can afford to be illustrated to that extent, excepting those with the right... connections. However, even fewer can physically stand the strain of using that kind of magic. The farther from the self the power is being used, and the larger the affect, the more energy it takes.
3. Seek help from the rulers of the kingdoms, though it's unclear just how likely assistance from either Kar or Mora will be.

Like... are we chillin in the castle of Mora or Kar and dealing with those politics of deciding what to do with the mountain scum or are we in the mountains or... what? haha
