Just as Anna was about to speak again, the waiter returned with their drinks. He flashed her a smile. "So are we ready to order?"

Jamie looked at Anna. "You go first."

Anna ordered, then stole a glance up at the waiter. He looked her up and down once, smiling, before he looked to Jamie. His smile fell a bit. "And you?"

'A new waiter,' he thought to himself but kept his cool and orded calmly.

The waiter nodded. "I'll be back with those in a bit," he said, taking their menus before heading off.

Anna sighed and dropped her head to her hands, her elbows propped up on the table. This wasn't going exactly as planned anymore.

Jamie watched her. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Anna lifted her head. "Just...embarrassed. I shouldn't have other guys checking me out when I'm on a date with you. It feels wrong."

"It's not your fault the punk doesn't have any respect."

She stayed silent for a long moment before looking him in the eye again. The corners of her lips tugged upwards in an apologetic smile. "Thanks, Jamie." She was so relieved that he understood. Some of the precious boyfriends she'd had wouldn't have blinked before punching the other guy's face in, or on the contrary, getting angry at her and leaving. Jamie was different: he was kind and understanding. She liked that.
