Kristyna held him to her. "I know babe," she said. "But you never told anyone? Not a friend?"

Luke rested his head against her shoulder. "No," he replied. "I never told anyone because I guess I wanted to believe that my mom was a regular mom and that my life was somewhat normal."

Kris stroked his hair. "When did you stop trying to convince yourself of that?"

"A few months before I joined the army, I think," Luke told her as she ran her fingers through his hair. "I think that's why I joined the army in the first place."

"To get away?" she asked. "I'm glad you did though."

Luke nodded. "A little, yeah. I needed to get away, and I figured that the army was my best chance." He smiled a bit when she said that she was glad. "I am too. I guess it turned out pretty well, huh?"

Kris nodded. "Yeah," he said. "Just know that I love you so much, and I'll never hurt you. And I'll never let anyone else hurt you."

Luke looked into her eyes. "I know you do, Kris. I love you too. And I promise that for as long as I'm around, nobody will ever lay a hand on you or Sarah. People like my mother..." He wet his lips. "People like my mother won't ever get near you." He pressed his lips to her forehead and sighed.

Kris closed her eyes when he kissed her head, and when he sighed, she looked at him.

Luke wrapped his arms around her. "Enough about me. Is there anything you want to get off your chest?"
