Luke turned back and looked at her. He gave her a two-fingered salute and a half-hearted smile, then stepped onto the bus.

Kris returned the salute, then watched him get on the bus.

Luke gave her a reassuring smile through the bus window as they drove off.

She gave a slight nod. When she was sure they were gone, she turned and looked at Cecilie, the tears already falling down her cheeks.

Cecilie hurried to her and pulled her into a hug, sighing softly. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, "but things will get better." She'd been without Jack for a bit, but she missed him every single day.
