Jack woke up, and stumbled out to the kitchen to make coffee.

Cecilie was already awake, making breakfast for everyone. Coffee was already being brewed. She'd had to wake up early to meet JJ's demands. It was like that kid never slept. Of course she loved him, but toddlers tended to wake up far earlier than she'd prefer.

"Hey, baby," he uttered, yawning.

JJ giggled. "Daddy! Mommy yook, it Daddy!"

Cecilie lifted her head from where she was making pancakes at the stove. She smiled tiredly. "Yeah, baby! It's Daddy!" She walked over to Jack and kissed his cheek, then turned back to flip the pancakes. The other kids were still fast asleep.

Jack smiled at JJ. "Hey bud," he said, yawning again. He smiled at Cecilie. "Sleep well?"

Cecilie yawned a few seconds after Jack did. What could she say? It was contagious. She smiled a bit and nodded. "Oui. And you?" After living in the United States for practically three years, she'd lost some of her accent, though she still mixed French into her sentences often.

"Yeah," he said, running his hands through his hair. "And what about JJ?"

He nodded. "Yeah, Daddy!"

Cecilie smiled and slid a pancake onto her son's plate. "Jack, could you cut that up for him?"

Jack nodded, and did as he was asked.

Cecilie made pancakes for Jack as well, then sat down at the table. She hadn't been particularly hungry lately.
