"No... I don't want to..." whispered Shadow as she sank down to her knees.
Both of the girls in the image appeared to have aged about two years. Shadow trudged after her sister in the ally, restraining the urge to kick dust across the street. Shade was wearing her normal sullen expression. They were both too lost in thought to notice the footsteps behind them, and din't even have time to scream as the were hit from behind and the world went black.
When Shadow woke up, she found herself in a small room with just enough light to see her sister staring blankly at the door. She began to stand up, when Shade interrupted her. "There's no way out. I've already tried." she leaped up and kicked the door. "See? Shut tight." Shadow could tell what she was thinking already. "You know not everyone is like this," she said softly. Shade turned around. "But some people are. It shouldn't be some, it should be none! Some is enough to kidnap two worse-off girls." Shadow bit her lip, knowing the older girl had a point. "They might help us," she said hopefully. "You can't give up yet. We don't know what's going to happen." Shade laughed distastefully before whipping around to face Shadow. "Don't you get it by now?" she said, her voice shaking. "No one will help us! No one in the same situation, no stupid rich person who doesn't understand pain, not even GOD will help us now!" she punched the wall and looked her sister in the eye. "WE HAVE BEEN ABANDONED BY THE WORLD!"
Shadow slowly stood up, stumbled, and fell again. She was exhausted.
"My my, isn't someone angry," purred a silky voice from somewhere in the room. Shadow shivered, from the cold or from fear she wasn't sure. But her sister stood her ground. "Who's there?" she asked boldly. From the shadows, a man appeared. He appeared to be in his twenties. Shadow shivered again, looking at his black attire. "My name is Vincent," he replied with a grin. "And it seems like you would like revenge right about now."
Shadow could feel tears beginning to run down her face. With every step she took, she became more unsure of where she was going.
"Now. Would you like to make a contract with me?" asked the man, smiling pleasantly but with an evil look in his red eyes. Shadow looked over at her sister, who was staring at the ground uncertainly. "Who are you? And what do you mean, a contract?" she asked. He stepped forward and held out his hand invitingly. "I already told you. My name is Vincent. And by contract I mean I can help you get revenge on anyone you want, help you fulfill your wish, at the cost of your soul." Shade looked up and smiled. "My soul, huh?" Shadow stood in the corner, terrified. "No, Shade! You can't!" Her sister looked over at her, her expression cold. "I can do anything I want. Having my soul eaten is better than continuing in this hell." Shadow flinched. She didn't like this, not one bit. Shade turned back to Vincent. "All right. 'll make this contract, and I'll show everyone how unfair things can be." Vincent smiled triumphantly and took her hand. At once, Shade collapsed. Shadow gave a small scream and ran over to her. "Sis! Are you okay?!" Shade's eyes fluttered, then opened. Her long hair fell off her face as she stood, and Shadow gasped to see a strange symbol blazing across her sister's cheek. Shade looked at Vincent, then down at her sister cowering beneath her. "get rid of this place," she ordered. Shadow looked up at her, shocked. "Sis--"
"I don't care. Shadow, you always underestimated them. In this world, people are capable of any act, no matter how cruel. You never realized that. You were weak. But now I'm about to show you," she said calmly. Shadow looked at the ground sadly. "I'm sorry, sis. I'm sorry this was the one time I let you slip away." her voice trailed into nothingness as Vincent followed orders.
Destroying Shade's hurt pride and resentment, along with Shadow's life.
Shadow was now crying very hard and scared. "I can't trust anyone," she whispered. "They'll just go away when I need them the most." She buried her face in her hands and ran. Running from the memories she didn't want to be hers. Running from the fears she had discovered anew. To the only place she would feel remotely safe, her only friend who had welcomed her the most. "What is she goes away too?" she thought miserably. But she knew she couldn't go on if she thought like that, and continued running to a lace where she would never be let alone, if such a place even existed.
