Katherine stared down at the ground, a small rat scattering away from the edges of her feet. In the old days she would have freaked out at the site of such an animal, but they had gotten so common to see that it didn't phase her anymore. She was left sitting down and thinking about Rem's words, which continued to haunt her mind.
"There's nothing we can do in this world that can make a difference - it's broken beyond repair." Maybe he was right. Maybe the world really was going downhill to doomsday, and there wasn't anything they could do. But where would humanity go? Would they travel away to one of the far-off planets that the space exploration program had found with earth-like qualities a few years back? It could be a possibility, but this world still had so much potential. There were organisms that still existed, and the oceans hadn't yet dried up. There were still rain forests left in the world.
But Katherine wasn't going to be able to finish whatever thought she had been thinking. The wall behind her felt like it was sucking her in, like it hadn't actually been a wall in the first place. She turned her head sharply to see a man wearing what appeared to be the colors of the wall itself, and wrapped his hand around her mouth to keep her from screaming.
Katherine started to thrash around like a fish out of water, but the man had injected her with a syringe that worked in seconds. The man pressed a button on the actual wall and opened up a doorway that Katherine hadn't seen before, but the effects of the shot he had given her were working at a fast pace. She felt her eyes get droopy, looking up just in time to see the doorway she was dragged through close. Katherine finally closed her eyes, falling into an unconscious state.
