The scary girl's mouth was slightly agape, enough to where I could see blood flowing freely. Each breath of hers was a mangled wheeze. It looked as if her day had been a rough one, to say the least.
"Where's Spec?" Cailyn asked, diverting my attention away from the girl.
"I'm right he--" I began to respond before I cut myself off, remembering that I didn't look like myself at the moment. At times, it was difficult being an illusionist, keeping up with all these disguises and losing track of who I had touched last, as I could only hold onto one capable illusion at a time. For example, I wouldn't be able to turn into that flight attendant lady unless I encountered her again.
Anyways, I fumbled as I searched for an excuse for Spec's abrupt "disappearance." "Er, um, uh, I--I don't know...." I mumbled, losing momentum and credibility as my eyes darted away from Cailyn's demanding ones.
"What happened to Spec?" She questioned, edging ever closer. Sweating, I gradually backed up until my back was against the door.
Without warning, the scary girl started stirring in sleep. Feeling as if a bomb was going to go off, I scurried out the door, calling out, "Err, I'll be right back with the food!" I neither wanted to answer Cailyn nor wanted to be in the room when that girl woke up.
When I finally approached the cafeteria, I briefly wondered if there would be anyone
left to give me some food (since it was getting pretty late and all), much less any food in the first place. Once inside, the only person I saw was the surly lunch lady, busily cleaning up for the night, complete with furrowed brows as thick as the hair on her upper lip.
I tried to hide, but she had already caught me with her predator's gaze. To my surprise, her fierce eyes softened as she got a better look at me.
"Harriet!" The lunch lady exclaimed, breaking into a gentle smile that I would have never expected to see on the likes of that woman. "What are you doing here?"
"Uuuuhhhhhhhh..." I said stupidly.
Way to think on your feet, Spec! "Oh, come here!" The lunch lady invited, holding open her arms in a hug that appeared very bear-like. "I know
exactly what you're looking for!"
"Uhhhh--"
"Hold on ONE second." The hairy woman turned around and disappeared into the kitchen. A great deal of rustling and scuffling sounded before she emerged with a hefty bag that rivaled with those I had to deal with when I was a flight attendant.
"A little midnight snack," she beamed, handing me the bag. I was immediately brought to the floor by its immense weight.
"Well,
technically it's not even close to midnight," the lunch lady mused. "BUT I just want to make sure that my daughter'll grow up big and strong!"
"Um--"
"Now off to bed with you!" She said, shooing me away.
Well, that was, erm, convenient, I thought after leaving that weird situation behind, dragging the leaden bag the tiring way back to Cailyn's room.
