A few weeks later, Mack sat on his couch, waiting for Hannah to text back.

Hannah could only stare at her phone with tear-blurred vision, her hands shaking. She couldn't text him back; how could she? She'd just found out that she was pregnant, and she couldn't bring it upon herself to disgrace him by telling him. What would his family think? She hadn't told Nan yet, but she slowly stood and went to go do that. She set her phone on her bed and made her way out to find Nan. When she found her, she told her all about what had happened, and she was shocked by the response she got: Nan kicked her out. She yelled and screamed at her about being a disgrace to the family, and then she kicked her out of the house. She'd already been fired earlier by Mary after she'd told her the horrible news. Sobbing, Hannah ran to her room and grabbed a backpack, blindly stuffing it with things. She grabbed a notebook, a pen, her phone, and the bag, then ran out.

Usually, Mack wouldn't get too worried when she wouldn't text back, thinking she was asleep. But today, he was very worried. He got up, pacing around the living room. "C'mon, baby just text back," he murmured, watching his phone as he paced.

Hannah stopped by a tree and sank down against it, pressing her pen to the paper and starting to write. When she'd finished her note, she ran to Mack's house and taped the note to the door, then turned and sprinted away, knowing she just had to leave. She couldn't do this to Mack, couldn't make him stay with someone who would only bring shame. She was horrified and disgusted with herself, so how could she allow Mack to be a part of that?

Mack sighed, and after a few minutes, he went outside. He grabbed the note when he noticed it, and read it.

My dearest Mack, read the note,

I'm pregnant, and I can't do this to you. I can't make you be with someone like me; can't make you live with the shame. That's why I've decided to run away. I lost my job and Nan kicked me out. I know that you said I was always welcome at your house, but...I just can't do it.

I'll probably be long gone by the time you read this note, so don't try to look for me.

I'm sorry, Mack.

Meanwhile, Hannah continued to run, tears streaming down her face.

Mack read the note, and teared up. She left. He ran back in, and tried to call her, crying.

Hannah didn't pick up. She couldn't bear to face him; not after that. She let her phone vibrate in her pocket, still running as fast as she could with tears streaming down her cheeks.

Mack practically threw his phone, and groaned. "Why did she have to leave?!"

Lizzie heard the commotion and walked downstairs to where Mack was, frowning. "What's going on?" she asked, immediately alert as she saw his tears.

Hannah kept running, her lungs burning. The bag weighed heavily on her back, even though she'd packed light. A clap of thunder tore through the sky and the clouds opened up as it started to rain.
