The world as everyone knew it changed forever the moment those dark magicians appeared in the eastern parts of the continent. Evil and malicious, they sought lands to conquer and they craved world domination.

Towards the west, the townspeople of Pirth were terrified. Terrified for both themselves and their family and friends. It wasn't just a rumor that the magicians were plotting to take it over soon. But nobody - not one citizen - was willing to step up and build an army to confront the magicians. The enemy had already made it very clear that any resistance would be met with sure death.

But before the darkness always comes just before the dawn.

In the midst of all this despair and darkness exists hope. For a long forgotten line of "magicians", known as elementalists, were about to reappear again and save the world from the enveloping darkness. To keep the only salvation of the world safe, they are sent off to a special academy - its whereabouts are unknown - where they will be kept watch twenty-four/seven so that the creatures and magicians that know of their existence do not try and illiminate them before their prophecy can be fullfilled.

нιѕтσяу - Kyle had quite the normal upbringing. There was nothing out of the ordinary that really stood out to him. Well, other than the fact that his mother disappeared whilst he was still young - around eight. But, seeing as disappearences were typical in Pirth, there wasn't much of a search party for her. Of course, Kyle spent many nights insisting that hey search for his mother and had spent even more nights trying to appeal for bigger search.
But his voice fell on silent ears and he couldn't help but break down.

He'd ran off from home one evening to the quardened off area of the forest - the only safe area left. He'd sat there with silent tears running down his face for what felt like forever. His mood continued to escalate in degrees of anger and before he knew it he was screaming his heart out into the night, calling out for his mother only to hear his own voice echoed back to him.

He heard distant howls of the creatures within the forest but not the voice he wished to hear. That soft, sweet voice that had cooed him out of so many tantrums. With his tears now burning not with heat but with an ice cold chill, his hands brushed the ground at his sides as he fell back against the grass only to find that it had grown cold and hard with frost. He frowned, wiping away the strangely crystalised tears, as he sat back up once more. Indeed the ground had frozen completely and, he realised, it had frozen every where other than where his body had laid. It was almost like the ice had sprouted from him.

Of course, being as traumatised as he was, he had sprinted back home without a second thought and had locked himself in his room... But he had never forgotten that moment.

History of Catriona? I suppose it could be told, if you insist on knowing it. Just be warned that Catriona herself probably won't be happy if she found out that someone else knew of her history. Anyways, she led a generally normal life, acting like a good girl and going to school each day. Her weekends and summers were all spend at home, sleeping or eating or reading. I know, not much to it.

But there was one incident - one strange incident that happened a year ago that most have forgotten. It was Catriona's birthday. She had invited several of her closer friends to her house to celebrate, and it was time for the cake and the blowing of the candles. But when the time came, her younger sister insisted on blowing the candles out herself. The two began an argument that escalated in volume and emotion until... boom! An explosion erupted from the birthday cake. The small flames of the candles had enlargened little by little until they were all touching one another, then they'd all burned out.

Explanations were made for the candles and the fire. Perhaps someone had added extra flames to the candle, or perhaps it had just been a total freak accident. But Catriona felt otherwise. And from that day on, she never thought of herself quite the same way.

With his arms folded over his chest, Kyle stared idly up at the sky above. His fingers idly tapped the opposing arms muscles and he sighed quietly as he listened to the sounds of the night. He was taking one last look up at the sky of Pirth before he headed back home to pack for the elemental academy. He'd heard little about it nor did his mother and father. Infact ther were more in the dark than he was. He bit his lip a little and lowered his gaze from the sky to look at the surrouding trees. He could hear those familiar howls that he had often confused for wind when he had been younger. But he knew what they belonged to now. The beasts that scowered the forests and lands surrounding them. Leaving into the forest alone without any form of weaponry was suicide.

After a while of gazing at the trees, Kyle heaved a sharp sigh and headed back towards his house only to pause for a brief moment. His eyes were locked on a nearby tree. His silvery-blue eyes narrowed. Had that tree just moved? With an unsatisfied hum, he turned to watch it only for it to shake once more but this time much more violently. His body froze much like the ice that swam through his veins every time he lost his temper. He could hear distant grumbling but it was just that, distant. His eyes narrowed a little more as he gazed at the tree for a moment longer before he continued on his way at a slightly swifter pace.

Night was falling. Even though Catriona was inside the family's wooden cabin, she could still feel the darkness descending upon Pirth. Shadows flickered in the corners, where the candlelight's glow couldn't reach. She continued to pack - stuffing clothes into a small duffel bag impatiently. Meanwhile, her thoughts wandered to the mysterious note she'd received earlier in the week. Written in a thin, spidery handwriting, it had summoned her to a special academy where she would be able to further her studies. Her mother had agreed to the idea of the academy, saying that "it surely shall be a good life experience, right?".

She stood then, suddenly uncharacteristically unsure of herself. What made her so special that she alone was to be summoned? Nobody else she knew had even mentioned this. Her thoughts flickered back to her last birthday, but she immediately pushed the memory out of her mind. No, it couldn't be that. She shook her head, stretching her sore legs and arms, light brown eyes flickering towards the glass window. Even through the grime and dirt, she could make out a shape in the distance, watching the skies. Kyle.

A sudden urge to be with company overwhelmed her. Her parents were out at the butcher's, buying meat even though it was dark. Surely someone else to talk to would be nice. She snatched up her bag and ran through the hallways to the front door, the floorboards creaking eerily after her. Catriona then set down the bag and opened the door slightly, peeking out into the darkness. "Kyle?" she called.

Kyle sighed quietly as he headed back down the path that lead back into Pirth. The only sector of the forest that was safe enough to stand in was only a few feet wide. It was a sorry excuse of a park but he loved it nonetheless despite the memories attatched to it.

His mind ran back to that moment when he was young. His fingers had lightly brush the grass but there had been so much frustration in him he just didn't know what to do with it. Then, of course, he found the ground to be hard and cold when he'd fallen against it. He still didn't understand it now and he'd never been able to do it since. There had been the odd time when he'd lost his temper and he touched a window pane only for it to freeze over and break.

Then his mind flickered back to the letter he'd recieved. It had been short, abrupt and to the point. It mentioned some sort of academy and his parents had instantly jumped for joy at the fact that their only son was to be going somewhere better to learn. They didn't even seem to care about the fact that there was no address or even a 'yours faithfully, blahblah' at the bottom. It just simply stated that he was to be sent off to some sort of academy.

"Joy," he sighed to himself, now wandering along the main road through Pirth. He jumped a little, however, when he heard a voice and shifted his gaze from the path ahead to the source. Catriona. He smiled a little, thankful it wasn't some stranger, and headed slowly across to her. "Hey," he said lightly, "you alright?"

Catriona peered out through the slightly open door before deciding to go fully out into the open. She left her packed bags in the corner behind the door, so he wouldn't be able to see. She didn't want anyone asking questions about the academy, thinking that she was different and had to go to a special school. Even though her mother had protested when she told them her thoughts about that, why not? The letter hadn't really mentioned the specifics of each course. It just had the label of a Pirth school certified to teach, and that was all that had been needed for her to immediately transfer to this new school that actually wanted her, unlike most others.

"Yeah, I suppose I'm fine," she responded, trying to make some light talk. It was strange speaking with Kyle - she'd had no intention whatsoever of starting a conversation with him before, and now she was the one initiating? "And what about you? I don't think I've ever seen you looking up at the skies from here before. Interested in the stars?" She raised her head towards the heavens above, scanning the dark expanse for their reassuring glows.
