A dense cloud covered the city. The city was packed with large buildings, rivaling at which was taller and which had the highest chimneys that were constantly spewing out thick black smoke. On the cobblestone streets below, horses clogged up the roads with carriages and carts and single riders, as well as motorized carriages that needed no horse, but only the wealthy had those. Everything was run by steam or coal, as it was abundant and cheap. There were no humans here, it was all canines. The rich were probably purebreds of some sort, and the coyotes were stereotyped as thieves. Foxes had been eliminated at some time, and the wolves were not city dwellers. Here were dogs- lots of dogs. Though they walked on all fours, they could stand on two legs pretty well as their back paw pads got a little longer to better balance. Their dew claws had grown out and were now capable of moving to grasp onto things.
They were intelligent. They created these machines, unknowing of any sort of consequence. To them, the black smoke was beautiful- a sign of progress. Though the streets in the poorer part of the city were covered in filth and starving, desperate creatures, it was all normal.
Now a dog, around five, with mostly white, short fur except around the head and tail which were fluffy, was trotting through the streets. She dodged horses and other dogs and retreated into a shop. The windows were darkened and the door was locked with a "CLOSED" sign in the window. She got in with a key that was held on a string around her neck. Once she got in, she pulled down the sheets that covered the windows and revealed small machines. They were mostly brass, some of a darker metal, some mixed with different metals. They had tubes connecting to various parts and they appeared to probably do something. As to what, it was unclear. The sign was flipped over so it said "OPEN" and the dog used the same key ring around her neck to select a key to unlock the old, wooden cash register on a counter. The small shop was full of little gadgets. Most probably didn't do anything and were just a scam for suckers who liked shiny stuff. Some of them were actually sort of interesting- like a golden sphere (not actual gold, just made to like like it) that could be opened if you were able to figure out the exact position to put little knobs all around the center of it. It was a puzzle of sorts, and there was supposed to be a prize inside if you could get the "impossible" combination.
It wasn't useful items- but hobby items. Something for a teenage dog to tinker with if they liked that sort of thing. Not exactly toys, but something a business dog might set on there desk to mess with once and a while. The dog hoped to get some customers that day.
