The Borrowers' Side
"Arrietty was a legend amongst us borrowers." Mother would always say, telling the legend one way or another. Some mothers didn't like Arrietty, for she had been reckless and thoughtless with her actions and cost her family their home. Others thought that she was a gift, showing that they could live with humans. Borrowers still remain hidden as best as they could be from human life, none ever bold enough as to speak to a human without claiming to be a ghost. To talk to a human was believed to be suicide, so most didn't have the guts to try it. Those who did disappeared, but a trace of where they could have gone left behind.

The Human Side
The Borrowers were a race that had been said to have disappeared, but to this day, everything that went missing was because of these little creatures. It was said that only children, the elderly, and the mentally insane could see these little people, but there are those who aren't so sure. Those little people have been appearing a little more often according to some people around the country, but those little creatures were still said to be nothing but myth. No one was able to get any kind of proof that wouldn't be said to be photoshopped or a trick, so no one every thought that they could be real. Or at least, that was what most would think if they never heard their tiny voices.

Mayia sighed lightly while watching the world go by. Humans were frightening, the way that they would stomp about without a care. Getting around was hard enough, and finding a home too… That really wasn't helping. She was able to ride the mice now and then, but none of them were wiling to let her on when humans were involved with her plans. Sitting in a little nook that was under an awning, Mayia watched as humans were running around to avoid the rain. That meant that more and more people would be leaving their trash out or dropping it on the floor. It may have been unsanitary, but food like that wasn't always gone before she could get to it. Other usually didn't take tainted food when there were so many other places with much better food that was easy to get. She just couldn't handle the competition. She was too weak for it. Once she was sure that most of the humans wouldn't be able to see her, she trotted out of her hiding spot, a candy wrapper over her head to keep her dry from the rain, her long brown hair and flowing white dress trailing behind her and making it look more like she was a little chipmunk under a candy wrapper, looking for a place to hide. She needed to find a place where few Borrowers claimed ownership. There were some clans that would claim entire buildings to themselves, and would have the means to back up their claim, so she couldn't just pick any fast-food restaurant. After dodging feet and occasionally tires, Mayia ended up outside of a rundown coffee shop… The stench was disgustingly strong, and they didn't sell more than doughnuts here, but it was better than nothing. She was able to get close to the step, but she was too small to climb up while trying to keep dry. She would have to keep waiting until the streets cleared a little more and the door opened for her, timid sky blue eyes watching from her hiding place under the candy wrapper.

=============================

Dex grumbled to himself, looking up at the grey skies as the rain fell. He was safe in the warmth of his home the loud and heavy rain bingeing him down. His Internet had gone down so there wasn't anything that he could really do. He was a lazy boy, and going out didn't seem to be an option. His mother said otherwise, though. Picking himself up off his seat, he ruffled his dirty blonde hair and slipped into a black windbreaker before heading out with his hood up all the way. He scuffled out the door in his winder boots and headed out. As warm as it was, the rain made it cold. Even in the middle of summer, it was cold, which really made it a wonder to him. "I'll be back in an hour." Dex called to his mom, unwilling to even speak to that woman. She probably wouldn't listen anyway. She wasn't going to care, as long as she had a bottle of whiskey in her hands.

Quietly bringing himself out the front door, Dex pulled his hood further over his head and trudged slowly out towards the sidewalk, looking over the overgrowing weeds in his yard. He would have liked to help take care of it, but again ,he was a lazy teenager. There wasn't much that he would do without proper motivation. He didn't care about his mother or the house that he was living in now, so there wasn't much point to it. Not to him anyway. In just a few months, he could legally move out. He would have enough money to live on his own in just a few more weeks, so he couldn't wait until he turned eighteen. He didn't need some drunk lady trying to run his life. It was the last thing that he needed.

    Ain curled up tighter at the sound of rain drumming on the doghouse roof. She was a lone Borrow, one with no family or friends. She sighed, unable to sleep any longer, and sat up. Just then, a huge fat dollop of rainwater smacked her in the head, soaking her red hair and clothing all the way through. She groaned and moved to the least leaky part of the empty doghouse, and opened up a zip lock bag. Inside it was another set of clothing she had made of scraps and strips taken from the humans. She quickly changed into it, and wrung out her wet clothing. After yanking on her boots, she stuck her cloths into a homemade messenger bag and slung it over her shoulder before grabbing a wrapper and using it to cover her head. She walked out of the doghouse and into the pouring rain. She moved the wrapper a bit so she could catch a stream of water with her mouth.

Dex never did like going outside very much, his eyes cast to the floor and his hood protecting most of his head from the pouring rain. Even over the pitter patter of the rain, he could hear the barking of the dog next door, and his neighbour telling at that stupid dog to shut up. He hated that dog, but he didn't think that they needed to yell at it. He was absentmindedly stepping on the sidewalk, then out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a bright splash of colour that was out of place in his little suburban neighbourhood. A candy wrapper… Of course. Those kids must have tossed it even after he scolded them about it. He leaned down, his hands now resting on his dampened knees and was about to pick it up, when he noticed that there was something off. It was moving, but not with the wind, almost like something was using it as an umbrella. He wondered what could be under it, but he was kind of worried that he might get bitten if he tried to pick it up, tilted his head a bit to try and see underneath the wrapper that use to hold a strawberry fruit drop.

((Just guessing it's Ain Dex sees, cause you didn't post for Mayia. X3 Correct me if I'm wrong.))

    The young Borrower shifted the wrapper again so the stream of water stopped going into her mouth, and began jogging forward. She licked her lips. Tastes like artificial strawberry. She thought, and rolled her eyes. It was annoying, having to hold the wrapper up, but she wasn't in the mood for getting soaked through. Anyway, a human might notice her, and that wouldn't be good at all. She sighed and came to a halt. The wrapper was getting heavier, probably because rainwater was collecting on top of it. She tried to shake it off, but that did no good. "Oh, to heck with it all!" She sighed. "Hit me with what you've got, rain." Ain almost set the wrapper down beside her, but hesitated. What if there's a human around? She thought. After a short moment, she poked her head from under the wrapper.

[Mayia is in an entirely different area of town X3 All alone T-T Hiding from the rain in the corner XD]

Dex watched for a moment longer, his head tilted slightly to watch the wrapper, when to his surprise, the head of a doll popped out. His eyes widened for a moment before he realized that it wasn't made out of porcelain. Almost as an instinct, he reached down, brushing the creature and the wrapper onto his hand before holding it close to his chest just under his hood. "I really must be nuts…" He mumbled to himself before bringing the thing up to eye level. It sure looked likes a little doll, but with it on his hand, he could definitely feel that it was more than that. He couldn't wrap his head around it, tilting his head over to the other side before reaching his thumb over to poke the little… girl? Who knew? With things that small, who could say that this wasn't a boy in a dress. There weren't many male dolls… "Huh…" He huffed in awe, wondering if this thing was going to bite his hand.

Ain yelped when she saw a human boy, and yelped again when he picked her up. She tried to remained standing upright, but every little movement made her tumble down. Aw, crap! This isn't good, this is not good! She thought, heart pounding. When the boy brought her to eye level, she stared at him with wide eyes. With I had my needle with me... or my glass! Either would have done. She noticed his thumb moving, and quickly dodged out of the way. "Ahh!" She squealed. Okay, okay... calm down, Ain... Act tough. Instead, she did the only thing she could do when she was really scared; curled up in a little ball, hiding her face and covering her head with her hands. Yeah, very tough, Ain. Your a pathetic whimpering ball of... of wimpyness. Can't even face a human, and a boy at that! Ha! Being found by a human was on the top of her list of fears and phobias, right above being eaten by a dog. She didn't know how to handle fear. It was her weakest point.

Dex blinked a few times, watching the little creature cower in the palm of his hand. It was kind of cute, his eyes watching over her. quietly as he picked the wrapper from over her and tucked it into his pocket. "C'mon now. Don't be scared little fella." He said tenderly, pulling his other hand from his pocket and carefully using one of his fingers to pat her back. He sauntered over to the fence and leaned himself against it, his hood keeping the little thing dry. He couldn't believe his eyes. This thing was so small… It had to be some kind of toy. He wasn't sure how to test its authenticity, though. "You okay?" He murmured, under of what to do in a situation like this, where he had a tiny person in the palm of his hand, cowering like he was just about to pick her up and eat her like the last jelly bean.

    Ain stayed curled for a moment longer, listening to his words. Eventually, she peeked out, brushing her long red hair from her eyes and staring at him in a mixture of fear and interest. He was looking at her the same, but without the fear part. I wonder what he's thinking... She thought, and blinked at him. She knew humans were big, but she had never seen them up close and personal like this. It was just.... scary. She summed up the nerve to speak. "Y-your not going to hurt me, are you?" Ain forced herself to speak loudly, so he could hear her. If he could hear her. She had no idea if he could, or if she was just squeaking or something. That would be weird. Maybe she sounded like the squeaking of a mouse? She shrugged inwardly and continued to stare at the boy.

Dex couldn't help but be fascinated by the little creature. It was kind of cute, so tiny and frail looking as it looked back up at him. She seemed scared, and he really couldn't wrap his head around how someone so tiny could even be alive. He stopped petting her once she moved again, using that hand to shield the little redheaded girl from the rain. He was simply amazing. "I won't… But… How are you even alive? You have an… owner or something?" He asked lightly, trying his best not to come across as a jerk, not that this puny little specimen of life could really do anything about it if he did. He could bully her all he wanted, being so much bigger, but he really didn't have the heart to. It would feel like bullying a baby, without the annoyingly loud crying that they always managed to pull, mistreated or not.
