- Calcifer looked down at Skye, smiling at her as he sat down beside her, lacing his fingers through hers. He felt her lean her head on his shoulder, just as she had asked how it was in his district. Immediately, Calcifer could picture the pine and spruce trees, the beautiful scent of the pines, the lumber that the district men - and some women - carried back to town. The kids often wrestled or played with hatchets, and at night there would always be a bonfire made from the wood of a recently cut oak or spruce..
"It's.. peaceful. We may look like insane psychopaths because we're all bulky, even the girls, and we use chainsaws at young ages, but really, we're more civilized that most other districts.. And you can infer everything else.. The forest of pines and conifers and spruces, the bonfires at night, the little kids chopping little twigs with their hatchets.. If only the Capitol had at least some trees.. And I would have preferred it if it weren't so bright." He murmured, squinting against the bright light again as he peered down at the people that were celebrating.. Celebrating probably another year of child slaughter... Calcifer wanted to spit at them in scorn, wondering how they could stand watching kids kill each other.. If Calcifer were to be a future president of the Capitol, the first thing he would do is ban the Games.. Or maybe he could make President Snow get rid of those wretched Games.. That is, if Calcifer survived these Games.
Calcifer sighed softly, remembering that the Games were later tomorrow. He only had so much time with Skye left before they might be separated in the Arena.. He wished that they had longer time.. All these negative thoughts kept pushing themselves into him, making him look away for a few moments. But Skye's question brought him back, his eyes directing themselves back to her and seeing her smirk at him then give that smile that he adored.. He smiled back at her, giving a chuckle as he shook his head.
"I'm not sure why they even gave me a twelve. They barely paid attention to me, too! I ripped a dummy's head off, threw a three-hundred pound weight, and threw about three of the four axes.. They didn't pay attention though.. So.." He paused for a moment, running a hand through his hair. "I threw my last ax at the Game-Makers, almost getting one of them in the head, but I nailed the portrait that was in the center of the wall that they were near.. That was pretty much what I did. I don't think it counts as cheating." He said teasingly as he nuzzled her head, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"So, how was life in District 4? I heard from a few friends back at home that all you guys do is catch fish and make nets.. Is that really all you do?" He asked her with a teasing glint in his eyes, although he seemed more curious. He heard that District 4 had the industry of fishing, but his fellow District 7 people never really told him anything much about them.
