Calcifer had thought that this year would be the same as the previous: he wouldn't have his name called during the reaping. Ever since he was twelve, he had been in the reaping, but never has his name been drawn. Those were the years of relief, when his mother and sister would run to him after the reaping and hug him, his sister crying from her relief that her precious brother wasn't taken from her... Calcifer himself had thought that he was invincible during the reaping! Seventeen years old, and still he was never called during the reaping. Life had been so easy, despite the fact that he had no father and that the Hunger Games took place each year..
But this year was different. Calcifer stood with the rest of the boys in the reaping, looking over at the announcer as she called the first tribute, a girl.. Then, after a pause, she picked out a boy's name... "Calcifer Prideaux!" His name rang out, and he felt his blood run cold. For those moments he was locked in a daze, staring down at his feet. His name was called. He was the tribute.
Calcifer strode past the crowd, hearing his sister screaming his name and his mother's sobs. He looked over his shoulder at them and lifted a hand, giving them a reassuring smile. "I'll be back." He had told them then walked up the stairs to the stage, where he looked at the girl tribute. He shook hands with the red-headed girl that was the other tribute, then turned, going into the room where he said his final goodbyes.
His sister refused to let go of him, clinging to his shirt like her life depended on it. His mother was hugging him tightly as well, trying to keep a straight face, but her lips kept dipping into a frown as a tear went down her cheek. There was nothing else in the world that hurt Calcifer more than seeing his mother and sister, the two people whom he cared for the most, cry and hurt so much.. "Mom.. Leah.. I'll be back.. I promise.. This is District 7.. I'll win this and come back home in one piece.." He told them quickly, as the men in white were moving to drag them away. His sister was ripped from his arms and his mother was yanked away, and he was left alone. Calcifer felt his heart constrict, the muscles lining his arms and back going rigid with tension, taking in a shaky breath as he straightened himself out. He was going to win this, whether he liked it or not. If he lost a limb, he wouldn't care. As long as he returned to his mother and sister.
Now, he was on the train, taking the food that was given to him, talking with his mentor and gaining some strategies before venturing back into his room, where he sat minute by minute, thinking over what had just happened. He was Reaped and sent to the Capitol. He was to go into the Arena and kill other tributes to win. He needed to win, for his mother and sister, for his District.. Calcifer sighed heavily as he ran a hand over his face, hoping that he was prepared for the Games.. They were in the Capitol, and the train was starting to slow to a halt. He dreaded to know what awaited him.. The people of the Capitol where by far the oddest things he's ever laid eyes on. He heard his mentor summon him and he rose, carrying his burly frame out of his room, ready to deal with whatever was coming to face him..
