Dropping back onto the floor by the wall, Kelsey rolled her thumb over the bookshelf as listened to him. Did she like painting and such? "Huh- oh, yeah. Drawing is practically my life and painting... it substitutes drawing, I guess." She shrugged her shoulders again, painting was alright. As she crossed her legs Kelsey let her eyes wander over Saul as he sorted through little bits and pieces of the Music Box. Watching him for a moment, her back leaning against the wall behind her, the mini-booksheld resting on her knee, she just watched him. Her gaze finally dropped to the project at hand, so she quickly poured a few shades of brown onto the paper plate and started to dab a few of the colors together with the paintbrush. "What about you? What made you realize you liked doing projects and things?"

I chewed on my lip as I thought about how to respond. Unfortunately, any reply I could come up with was most likely going to generate more questions from Kelsey. Oh, well. Might as well get a few overwith.
"Well, my grandfather liked to make things," I told her. In the middle of my sentence, I found the piece I had been looking for. I gingerly picked it up from the table and moved it closer to the pieces I had already fit together. "I thought it would be cool to be able to make all of the things he could, so I asked my grandmother if I could start building things. She wouldn't let me near the power tools when I was that little, so I got dollhouse kits and airplane models for my birthday."

"That's neat," Kelsey spoke softly as she gently stroked her brush across the small shelf. Her mind was concentrating on it, though she could still talk every now and then. "Did you live with your grandparents?" Peeping up for a moment, her brown eyes quickly glanced up at him before returning to the wooden piece in her hand. Again she swept the brush across the top before glancing up at him. "I just mean- why did you pick those things up from your grandfather and not your dad or mom?" As she twisted the brush in a spot of paint, Kelsey rose her eyes up to look back over at Saul. Why in deed had he picked that up from his grandfather?

I paused in the middle of what I was doing. My hands were poised carefully over the tweezers and miniature pieces I needed to make the music box. "I didn't know my parents," I said, taking care not to sound too aggravated or annoyed. I hated talking or even thinking about my parents. "My grandmother raised me, yes. I grew up in a house full of things my grandfather made by hand, then refinished and mended years later. I wanted to be like him."
Meaning normal. I'd also grown up in a house void of all company excluding my grandmother, who had rarely bothered to mention that being blue wasn't normal. I wanted, more than anything in the world, to be at least a little less alien than I was. A little more human. Even though my race was bred for the opposite.

She got quiet when he said he never knew his parent's. Maybe this was a sore topic for him then? Taking a few moments in silence to continue on painting, Kelsey wondered what had happened to his parent's so he didn't know them. Had he been given away? Or perhaps his parent's merely couldn't raise him for some reason? She couldn't even think of which parent gave him his... blue traits. Not being too sure, she just went the safe way and guessed both. "Would you mind saying why? If you want to- if not I understand." Curious about the answer, Kelsey set aside her bookshelf and planted her elbows on her knees and her chin in her hands. As she waited for him to answer she studied him, wondering as to why on earth he would be raised by his grandparent's.

I placed the tweezers on the tabletop and set my hands in my lap. I stared at the pieces on the table. They were so tiny and fragile. I could break them if I wasn't careful enough. I could easily break anything in the room.
"Dad skipped out on mom nine months before I was born," I said. I didn't regret how blunt my tone was. It hadn't sounded that bad in my mind. "Mom died in childbirth. Her mother raised me like her own, and I hold them both in the highest respect. I only hope that my dad has come to an unfortunate end as well, because if I ever ran into him, all hell would break loose in the form of a knife to his stomach."
I paused here. Perhaps that was a little too morbid. I didn't want Kelsey thinking that I was a creep who hated the world. I was too worked up to finish with the music box. I'd have to work on it some other time. "Sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound like that," I murmured.

Being a bit startled by his words Kelsey grimaced lightly before continueing to paint the bookshelf. So maybe Saul had some... tense feelings with his father, that didn't really mean anything. She argued with her parent's all the time, that didn't mean really mean anything either. "It's - It's fine. I can understand." Blowing softly on a bit of paint that was still very wet, she let her eyes roam around the room again. The question about his house slipped into her head. "Why do you live by yourself out here then? If you liked your grandparent's so much?"

I shrugged. There was no way I would be able to concentrate on a project after this. Well, that was fine. I could find something else to do. Play music, or something.
"I woke up one day and realized that I was blue and had horns," I said simply. It was a legitimate answer. "It came as a shock, actually, to all of a sudden realize how different I was. I hadn't noticed the terrific divide between what I was and what other kids my age were. Then I understood why my grandmother had never let me socialize with other kids my age. She was protecting them from who-knows-what."
It sounded depressing when I put it like that, but it was true. My grandmother had kept me away from other children for my whole life. I hadn't known how to use my camouflage then, but that wasn't worth mentioning out loud. She always told me that she didn't want me to get myself hurt. Other kids would bully me, she had told me when I got older, and that was why I was homeschooled and had no friends. I realized one night when I woke up for some reason or another that it hadn't been because of bullying at all. She had been afraid that I would hurt someone, because I was dangerous. I didn't know my own strength. That had cost me quite a lot without my even meaning for it to happen.

Kelsey sat the small shelf down and looked up at the boy across the room from her. What her eyes picked up was very much different from how she really say him. Yes, the horns were there. They peeked out of his curly black hair like they wanted to see the world just as much as he did. His blue skin -scales, she reminded herself- tone was a very bright reminder that he wasn't any usual person. Still she didn't see him as a blue man with horns. Even with her odd fear/scaredness, she could see that those traits didn't define who he was. "Then why move? Whats special about this house? Why kidnap a girl?" Her voice was soft, trying her best not to sound prying even though she was. She wanted to know more about the matter, if that included prying or not.
Slipping a loose strand of hair behind her ear, Kelsey gazed over at Saul. Still her mind was trying to come up with reasons as to why he would move away from his grandparent's if he liked to so much there. What really was special about this house? Had they died and he just stayed in the home left behind? All the possiblities came to her, yet she couldn't really guess at which one it could be.

I took a deep breath. Why would I kidnap a girl? Because I wanted company. I was lonely after four to five years of -guess what- being alone. It was what made me consider that okay that she might have a probably with. I would kidnap a girl because that was what people did in my society.
"You probably don't want to hear my sob stories," I sighed. Perhaps Kelsey would get the hint and drop the subject, but chances were that I wouldn't be that lucky. "Um. I think I'm a little tired. I'm going to...go back to the house, I guess. Do you want to finish the little bookshelf, or are you ready to go back too?"
