Elizabeth stiffened slightly at his words, picking out the double meaning in them.
"I did not mean to imply such things, sir,"
she said quietly, turning away to fuss with some of the things in her room.
"I have good reason to be uptight and worried. Lord knows that if I get fired from this job for messing up, my family will suffer because of the shortage of pay. The older a woman gets, the harder it is for her to find a high paying job, because the nobles only want the pretty faces working in their houses and will only pay them well! I try my hardest to earn your parents' trust and string out my employment here as long as I can. If I can get them to see that I am a competant maid who is willing to do her work without complaint and does it right the first time, maybe I can get lucky and stay here for a very long time. So I apologize for wanting to keep my job!"
