When they arrived at the peninsula, he saw Brightmist, (the Leafclan deputy) cautiously approach him when he was done talking to a Marshclan elder.
"Hawkstar," she murmured.
"Hi Brightmist," Hawkstar said, looking down at his paws. They had become friends when they were young. Eventually though, their friendship had dwindled. "We haven't spoken for a long time." He paused, then said, "I've missed our adventures."
Brightmist smiled sadly. "Me too." She paused while looking around for a moment, her amber eyes wary of eavesdroppers. "Remember that night, when we were apprentices?"
"Starlingfur, Kinkheart, and Rockpelt were there too." He smiled. "We were an odd group of friends."
"Yes, we were." Brightmist looked around some more. "Remember the old cat that we spotted?"
Hawkstar's stomach churned at the thought of him. "How could I forget?" He paused. "Do you ever think about what he told us?"
"All the time."
"Well it's certainly not us. It has to be another group of five."
"To take the quest? I suppose. I mean, it makes sense. We can't go anymore."
"Then.. who?"
"I don't know," Brightmist mewed. "We-"
Her sentence was cut off by Jaystar's voice from over by the tree. "Shall we start?"
"We'll talk later," Hawkstar whispered to her. Then, much loudly, directed towards the leaders, "Who wants to go first tonight?"
"I will, if you don't mind," Otterstar said.
