Lilli burst into the backyard and the sounds of Kous digging were carried to her ears. She yelped excitedly and located the spot along the fence where she could hear Kous. She stuck her paws in and began to tear at the earth.

Kous heard the flapping of a door of some kind, quickly followed by Lilli's bark, loud now and unmuffled by the glass. Her panting joined his and he heard her little paws begin sweeping at the ground. Pathetic, he thought smugly as he flung chunks of dirt out behind him with powerful scoops of his legs.

Lynx

He strode forward silently, his eyes locked on a 4 legged mammal. He then stopped, his hind quarters wagging. He lunged, taking the small deer down easily. He killed it, and started devouring it. He thought, bitterly, Since when did deer start coming into town? Since when did lynxes live in towns... He growled, his black and gray body twisting. He was small, because he was young. He streaked across the grass in the park where he lived. He leaped underneath the bridge, carefully making his way over the frozen river, and slowly walked toward a hole behind a sheath of trees. He padded in, his mother sleeping quietly. He dropped some deer beside her and her new kits. He then moved toward a tunnel in the hole, and walked in. A small dirt cave with moss lining it greeted him. He sighed, and curled up, falling asleep.

Eben

Quietly, paw steps echoed through the ally. Pitch black sucked at her, but she saw clearly. Her eyes darted here and there, her head tilted so her eyes didn't reflect light. She then stopped, and looked straight on. She saw the flash lights moving quickly in her direction. She knew what they were there for...To kill her. She turned tail, and ran, jumping onto a fence, she turned and looked at the mob of hunters. She jumped off the fence, but not in time. She heard a bang. They saw her. Another shot. Pain shot up her spine, and covered her body like water. She yowled, but kept moving, streaking across the grass in the park. She jumped into a hole under a tree, blood pounding in her ears, a hole in her side. She panted, the people still looked for her. She then saw them walked away. She sighed in releif, but then...she heard a voice, Who are you? She turned slowly, her emerald eyes falling onto a large, black and gray cat thing growling at her. A mother and her kits sat behind him. She stammered, I-I'm Eben...I'm sorry, but I was going to get killed if I didn't hide soon! She then realized the cat was merely a kit itself. She heard the soft, soothing voice of the female mother, saying quietly, Let her be, Lynx. She's exhausted, and filthy. Lynx reluctantly backed off, allowing her into the den farther. It was quite warm and cozy. Eben smiled softly, saying, quietly, Thank you so much!

Snow Bird

Snow Bird slowly walked across the park, her eyes keen, her tail flicking irritably. She walked to a play ground, and jumped up onto the highest slide, and looked at the moon. A sigh escaped her.

Lilli huffed as she dug, unused to the exertion. Oblivious to the danger as always, she barked. "What are we doing?"

Kous's ears flattened breifly as Lilli make a racket requesting more information. "Keep your voice down," he said, just loud enough to be heard. "I'm not exactly supposed to be here, digging you out."

Antoinette shivered in the autumn cold. She loved the season and its crisp air, but this kind of cold was unusual.

Lilli clapped her jaws shut at Kous's command. He sounded very sure of himself.
But after a minute curiosity got the best of her and she repeated her quesition in a murmer.

Despite Kous's warning, the ignorant puppy spoke again. He felt a flash of annoyance; her way of doing first, thinking later was getting under his skin. But he replied in a low voice, "Getting you out."

Lilli heard his answer and was mildly surprised. "Why?"
"Don't tell me you want to live here."
"It's my home."
"So what was the howl about?"
Well, I was hungry... the adults forgot to feed me-"
"So, there you go. We're doing what ignorant humans don't- feeding ourselves."
"Okay!" Lilli's unbeaten enthusiam sprang up again.
Kous continued digging with a short snort of laughter. You'd think she enjoyed being stuck with humans, the way she talks...
