Lead Stallion: The lead stallion is the one who is the leader of the herd. He is the father to most of the foals in the beginning.
Lead Mare: The lead stallion will usually mate with all the mares first, but the lead mare is his favorite. The lead mare will come and lead when the Lead Stallion has something to do and will be away from the herd.
Back-Up Lead Stallion/Lead Colt: The back-up lead stallion, or lead colt, is usually the first-born male of the lead stallion's offspring with the lead mare. He entrusts his eldest son to take his place one day, and he comes in handy when extra protection is needed. He goes under training by his father and when the lead stallion dies, he will take over. His mother is always the lead mare, and when he takes over, she will be demoted to the Dowager Mare status. The newly made lead stallion will then choose the new lead mare. In the case that the herd is taken over while he is still lead colt, he will be kicked out and a new one will be made.
Dowager mare: The dowager mare is the former lead mare when the back-up lead stallion takes over after the death of his father. This rank is still important. She trains the new lead mare and teaches her about good places to go and such. She can no longer mate and stays in this rank until she dies, unless she leaves the herd.
Mares: These are just mares within the herd. They follow the orders of the lead mare and lead stallion. They mate with the lead stallion almost every spring.
Yearlings: These are the colts and fillies of the herd that are older than 11 months but younger than 2 years. They no longer drink their mother's milk at this stage and have moved on to eating grass and plants. They also learn about herd life at this stage and improve their social and fighting skills. Colts are typically kicked from the herd in the next year unless they are to be a lead colt.
Foals: They are younger than 12 months old. They are either a colt or filly. Fillies are female and colts are male. They do not stop drinking their mother's milk until they are a yearling. Usually the offspring of the lead stallion.
Stallions: There will only be 2 other stallions other than the lead. They may pick their mate after the Lead Stallion does, and only can they mate after the first foal, fathered by the lead stallion is born.
Courting: Simple. When a stallion mates/is mating with a mare.
