it started with a simple cough, but quickly spiraled out of control. the cough led to terribl
e pneumonia which in turn brought upon a blazing fever which ends up killing the infected
host. it was a horrible and painful sickness that killed many every day, but surprisingly onl
y the older mature horses were affected. the immature youngsters seemed to be immune
to whatever the sickness was, only getting a minor fever if they were yearlings. the plagu
e lasted a week before the humans took notice and came with their metal boxes and loud
machines. all of the mature horses were captured while the immature youth fled to the c
anyons to wait out the disaster. two weeks later, they return home to find it empty. no on
e knows if the sickness will return and no one is sure how to go about life without adults,
but spring is here so instinct will be the guide. fillies of age are going into their first heat
s and colts are fighting for their favor. they are determined to not just survive, but thrive.

  this is a relaxed literacy roleplay (3-4 lines per character), but it's not a no-literacy rp so no 1 liners or short choppy posts. please use proper punctuation and spelling but i don't expect you to all be perfect. for example, i almost always write in all lower letters which is acceptable. all caps however is not acceptable. please do not use images in any of your character posts, or links, some people can't access the page when links and images are trying to load. please make your character posts pretty, include their name, tags, herd, etc. please make it different from other peoples, so don't use their one, but it can be the same for each of your characters obviously.
  
  
• forms & characters //
  please provide your own forms, do not steal others form. you can ask to use others forms, but if they say no, you can't use them. (put credit in the form somewhere to who made it) take note that if you do use someone else's form, it does not show me your creativity, so if you can't role play to the standard you will be asked to leave it.; please include name, age, gender, breed, height and personality. also, if you add horses/foals, please add it to the original post of your forms, or set up each of your character posts as i've done. one for stallions, one for mares, one for foals and add horses to those posts, please don't have random horses scattered across the discussion thread, let people/me know when you've added a horse. foals born into the roleplay are automatically accepted unless twins, pm me first as said.
  
  
• breeds & sizes //
  almost any breed allowed except full draft breeds [shires, clydesdales, etc.] as they are far too large to survive in the wild like mustangs. draft mixes must be diluted with the draft blood being the secondary/lesser mix [ex. warmblood/percheron or thoroughbred/belgian draft] so they only gain marginal size/strength from the mix and aren't overpowered. please keep in mind that this rp is based around foals and young horses under 3 years of age so heights will be quite limited for the younger ones. horses tend to stop growing around 4- to 5-years-old, so the 3-year-old horses in this roleplay will be within a hand or two of their full height. small pony breeds [basically anything under 14hh full grown] won't be accept either as they are far too small to successfully breed and survive along side much larger horses. pony mares that breed with larger horses tend to have much larger foals which result in breech births and death while foaling.
  
  
• number jacking //
  if i find that you are purposefully exaggerating your horse's size or breed for the sole purpose of one-upping whomever they are in a fight/argument with, you will be kicked from the roleplay. it's both annoying and extremely frustrating for someone to suddenly jack up age and/or size when their horse is confronted with a bigger/older character. if i, or anyone else, find that you are jacking numbers after being accepted with lower ones only to make your character win every fight, you will automatically get kicked from the roleplay. i will not tolerate such behavior anymore [it's happened too many times in previous rps]. consider this your only warning. being unsure of sizes is okay, we can work it out and get things sorted, but do not think you can just amp up sizes or age after the numbers are set. you may ask to change the size or age of a character, but only for good reason.
  
  
• age limits //
  starting ages are limited to only 6-months to 3-years, no older and no younger since the plague killed off those older and those who need milk can't survive. time will pass in the roleplay so your character may age past the 3-year cap and have foals that disregard the limit, but characters cannot start off older or younger then the limit. your horse can live to be twenty-eight years old and no older. mares will be able to breed until they die, but after 18 the risk for death is at about 80%. it is of course entirely up to you to decide when and how your characters die; this is just here as a general guide for those who don't go out in a dramatic blaze of glory.
  
  
• signatures //
  i must ask that you disable your signatures on this thread. not only does it give the thread a seamless feel, but myself and others often access the site via mobile device and it helps cut back on lag and loading time greatly. chronic breakers of this rule will be warned of an impending strike, if they keep breaking it they will get a strike.

• twins //
  twins are rare. i'll allow a max of 4 pairs born per spring, but only 2 of the pairs will survive full term. the other two the role player must decide which foal won't make it, or, the dam will die, which in turn, both foals will die. be aware, twins are dangerous for a mare, often taking the mares life before labor. for below, singleton is where only one twin from the pair will survive.

• herds //
  keep the herds realistic, some colts can start breeding at 6 months, some not until they are yearling, to keep things interesting, you can with the mare's permission, have a colt of the stallion breed the stallions mares (note this is between the player of the mare and the colt, not the stallion's player... don't chuck a hissy fit if your mare is covered behind your stallion's back.) since the cap age is 3-years-old, colts may start breeding as a yearling should they find willing fillies, but fillies can only start breeding at age 2 when they become mature. yearling fillies will not survive pregnancy should they be covered. all horses start as loners, only through roleplay will herds be created.
  
  
• seasons //
  spring, summer and autumn will last thirty to forty pages, winter will last twenty to twenty five pages to avoid the rp dying; if this needs to be altered in the future, it will be, but for now this is the schedule. the seasons are better explained below.

  the winter snows are melting and the flowers are starting to bloom. the clear blue sky is warming up with the bright rays of the newly awakened sun that had been sleeping all winter long. with the warming of the meadows, comes the birth of new life. foals are being born and their mothers come into heat a week later which causes the stallions to fight and fend off any bachelors who want to start a herd of their own. fillies covered in the spring will birth right on time next spring.
  
  
• summer //
  the days are longer and the nights are getting shorter as the sun blazes down on the valley and horses below. many of the smaller water holes have long since dried up and there is only one large pool of water left which causes tension in the already aggressive stallions as they have to allow their mares to be around other stallions in order for them to drink. mares are still in heat and the stallions still have their work cut out for them. fillies covered in the summer tend to have late summer births which is a danger for mothers since water is limited.
  
  
• autumn //
  the temperature is starting to decline once more and the nights are longer as the hot days begin to shorten. most of the mares are no longer in heat, but there is always that one or two who arrive late. lone mares start searching for herds in earnest now since winter isn't too far off now. as the season begins to change into the dreaded coldness of winter, light snows will coat the land during the night, but it's still too warm for it to really stick and pile up until later. fillies covered in autumn will birth in the late autumn of the following year which is very dangerous for foals since they don't have enough time to develop enough fat or a winter coat.

  days are very short and cold with the nights even worse. many equines die during the deeper freezes, but those who are young and healthy will survive. the older equines usually don't make it since their worn out bodies can't produce enough heat and they freeze. young newborns are at risk as well, late winter foaling can be a death sentence for a newborn as is an early spring birth if their is still snow on the ground.

it has been 2 weeks since the youngsters returned from their hiding in the canyons. spring started a few days ago, but the youth are uneasy and unsure since they don't have adults around to show them what to do. those who are older [2- and 3-years-old] know some from watching the adults last spring, but it's all still new to them. none of the colts has ever bred or tried to breed since they are all far too young to keep a herd and stallions would keep them away. instinct is all these horses can go on as a guide. and lots of trial and error.

winter had been rough this year, more so than any other year probably. hopefully, spring will be the best in years. it already smells like a normal spring at least. heat scents hang in the air like it always does in the spring, but this year atreus can actually do something instead of stand around and watch as older stallions take all the pretty ladies. now he can take all the pretty ladies himself. the black colt idly drinks from the waterhole, appearing calm and disinterested while actually scouting the area with practiced ease. he makes it look like he's just glancing around boredly while licking the water from his lips when in fact his mapping out the location of other colts and where the fillies were. he did this last year, acting as if he wasn't interested to keep the older stallions off his tail. if one showed interest in the mares, their band stallion would chase the offending colt away.

from his 'casual' glances, atreus finds only a few other colts who would be a problem. they were his age or a few months younger and also smaller. not much of a challenge, but still a possible annoyance should he want any fillies they end up with. his father had taught him the easy way of getting mares, defeat a younger brute for their herd and take them. it was much easier then running around and trying to court every single one. then again, this is different, there's only young fillies to get instead of older mature mares. fighting off a younger colt with young fillies would only result in chaos where the fillies will probably scatter in fear. many of the fillies don't seem old enough to breed anyway and were still quite immature and ignorant of the ways of a herd. there seemed to be a few older fillies around his age that would have been on their own during the plague so they would know herd politics. he'll have to start with the oldest fillies then, get them first and have them teach the youngsters he collects. for now he waits, idly drinking and grazing by the water's edge, all the while staying by the waterhole since horses have to drink sometime. fillies will end up coming to him instead of him wasting time and energy looking for them.

it wasn't much of a change when the adults died from the plague, her mother having passed the month before and her sire being disconnected. the few other mares in her birth herd were nice, but they weren't interested in another mare's offspring. eos' birth herd was quite broken from the start. now it's gone. eos didn't really mind not having any adults around, they only got in the way anyway. perhaps she can find a decent enough colt and start a new herd, one she can lead and keep together better then her birth one. she was old enough to breed, her heat scent says as much, but she was still quite young in the ways of herds and politics. her mother had tried to teach her as much as she could before dying, but she had left out a few parts. seems like she'll have to figure it all out on her own.

eos grazes alone like most of the other horses who were scattered across the valley. there were no herds yet since they had only returned a couple weeks ago when spring arrived. she wonders which young colt will start a herd first, one of the older ones or a yearling youth. it would be quite amusing if a yearling started a herd before one of the older mature colts. the filly grazes calmly, though was getting restless. she was unsure if she should go find a colt herself or wait for them to come to her. it would be easier for one to find her, but it also could take too long. the grey filly snorts to herself and starts walking down the valley towards the waterhole in the distance. perhaps there will be horses drinking and she can find someone decent to join there.

He just wish he was the type to get a fillie, but he knew that no matter how hard he'd try they probably wouldnt like him. Its not that he isnt kind and caring, its that he is awkward and closed off. Delicate ran after her brother in a happy mood for some reason, but thats only when shes with him. Unlike her brother she is rude and offly mean. When they reached the stream she lapped at the water breathing heavily, then looks around, she squints and sees others. her happiness disappearing.
Tossing her head she walks back to danny and playfully nips him on the shoulder, he didnt feel like playing today so she just walked away and wondered off by herself. She kept close to the stream, and made sure no filles or colts where gonna bother here by glaring at them

The lone colt, trotted through the valley his head held high, and his ears pricked. It was a beautiful day for roaming, the valley. His gaze scanned the vall
ey, the last bit of winter snow melting away. But winter itself would take a while, if ever to forget. Last winter, a few mere weeks ago. many horses died
off. He didn't understand why, nor did he think anyone else did. The valley was blooming with flowers, but it seemed to be almost empty. A few horses
we're scattered around the valley, but otherwise it was no where near the number it used to be. He wondered what could have caused this. Well, at least
he wouldn't have to deal with the older stallions. At least, not the really older stallions. Most of the stallions we're either a few months older than him or
younger. He wondered if this would finally be the time, to try to find a filly of his own. He stopped and glanced around, before snorting. He wasn't really
interested in finding a filly. He wanted to roam, and travel. To discover new places. And now he could do it. So, with a flick of his tail, and a whinny he
trotted off in search of something interesting. Something that no horse had ever seen.

The young horse galloped through the grass, the last patches of snow crunching under her hooves. It was finally spring, every horses favorite season. Hea
t scents traveled through the air, and with a sigh she knew those scents would be coming from her as well. Which meant she would have to deal with you
ng colts. She wasn't interested in any colt, and wasn't planning on starting a herd with one either. She stopped to graze for a bit, her ears twitching slight
ghtly. She came to a patch of snow that had not melted yet, and memories from a few weeks ago came back to her. Winter was rough, but last winter es

The cream colored filly trotted through the grass, her ears pricked, and her tail swaying slowly. She was traveling at a steady pace, her eyes taking in ev
erything around her. Flowers we're beginning to bloom, and the last of the winter snow was melting away. But winter itself, wouldn't be forgotten for a
while. She sighed, remembering her mother's words. She had to stay strong during these times, and help others who needed it. She pawed at the snow
with her hoof, before continuing onward. Her tail swayed behind her, as she made her way toward the waterhole. Slowing down, she glanced around no
ticing a few colts, and fillies. No doubt that one of the colts would try to find a filly of their own, as she had seen the stallion do many times, before th
ey died off. With one last glance around, she padded up to the waterhole, and dipped her head beginning to drink.
