Life on a ranch is perfect for some dogs. But it is serious work and everyone is expected to complete their tasks. Certain dogs have different tasks. Some are expected to guard the sheep, herd animals or simply patrol the area. There are even some dogs that are used for hunting and tracking. There are many different job positions that need to be filled. What position are you suited for?

This is an rp of dogs living on the ranch. You can have your dog(s) be whatever breed you want as long as it fits with a job on the ranch. The ranch has a lot of land as well as different kind of animals living on it. They need dogs for herding sheep/cattle and keeping animals like coyotes and wolves out. There is a lake and a wooded area next to the ranch as well

Panting softly after herding the sheep together, she was relieved when all of them were safely moved to the field for them to graze. The farmer gave the signal for the dogs to go about their business and she eagerly ran down the side of the hill. Maybe she could go down to the lake for a bit. It seemed to always be cooler there.

Apollo

Having helped to herd the sheep, he waited until the farmer set them loose and he was at Skye's side, running for the lake. The lake and the barnhouse was usually where most of the others hung out. He could use a quick swim to combat the heat of the day. The sun was shining brightly and despite the heat, it was a rather nice day.

Walking along the fence by the field, she saw some dogs running down the hill and realized they must have finished herding. Sometimes she helps and sometimes she checks to make sure no coyotes are lingering about. Although she was sure that Atlas would deal with them if they were.

Seeing the others take off, he laid down in the field as the sheep began to graze. He usually stayed with the flock to keep an eye on them. His kind was known to do that and he didn't mind his job at all. It was rather peaceful and coyotes got scared when they saw how big he was. Honestly, all he had to do was bark and they were send running with their tails between their legs.

Out near the woods, she was practicing scent following with Dakota. The Lab was rather skilled in this area but he was used more for duck hunting since he adored the water. She didn't like going in the water and preferred to stay out. Nose to the ground, she caught fox scent but it was rather old. "The only new scent I can find is raccoon. I don't think we will find anything. We should head back."

Sitting down as the other sniffed around, he let out a soft yawn when she spoke. "Alright. Sounds good to me. We should go and see how the others are doing anyway." He said as she stood and stretched his back out. "I bet they are going to gather by the lake today."

Willow

As the dogs finished the mornings work, Willow lay in the shade of a tree next to the lake, drifting in and out of sleep. It had been a beautiful morning, and though the shade had been fine for a few hours, even it was starting to heat up to an uncomfortable level.

Standing up, shaking her coat out, the matriarch couldn't help the slightest spring in her step as she stretched, and then immediately jumped into the cool water, putting her head straight under and blowing bubbles. Even older as she was, Willow still enjoyed the water, and as with many of her breed, she was almost puppy-like at times while in any body of water.

She had just settled in a sandy, shallow hollow on the edge of the water when the other dogs raced down the hill towards her, and she barked happily in greeting. So many of her family, all vital in life! As she watched, she felt a deep sense of pride in them, and as the border collie reached the water, Willow barked once more with a greeting. "Skye! How was the morning work? Did everyone do well?"

Wandering through a thicket of trees that stood on the ranch, the big, grey dog sniffed and investigated. A squirrel here, the trail of a hare there. Nature had so many interesting stories to tell, and luckily, apparently, no jackals lately.

Hearing the sudden bay and barking or various dogs in excitement, Hunter pricked his ears and listened. Seemed like the herding was done for the morning, to give way to a relaxing afternoon until the heat of the day melted away. Deciding it was time to head back, the gentle dog trotted towards the lake, his nose working as ever, and a slight more eagerness in his step.

Not even hesitating, Tess tore off after the pack of fellow herding dogs, racing towards the lake, tonque flying, almost bouncing. She had done really well this morning, and had been given a pat on the head for being a 'good girl'. Tess knew this statement to be almost as heavenly as 'food'.

In her headlong dash however, she saw a particular brown and tan figure on the otherwise of the fence closest, and she quickly changed direction, her tail swinging to help her keep balance with the sudden turn. "April!" Diving headlong through the fence, the youngest dog on the ranch (for now), grinned her big grin at her friend and playfully jumped on the kelpie's back. "You coming for a swim?"

Seeing the older female, she smiled as she easily waded into the water. It lightly lapped at her belly fur as she didn't intend to fully submerge herself. "Quite well. Tess is learning fast and doing an excellent job. With a little more practice, I am sure that she will be able to herd sheep on her own. But everyone is working well together and no sheep broke free from the group this time."

Reaching the water, he laid down next to it as a soft breeze ruffled his fur. The area always seemed to be much cooler here and he enjoyed the breeze. Closing his eyes for a moment, he could hear the others move about and several voices drift by. Opening them, he glanced over to where Skye and Willow was. "You should join us sometime Willow. I could show you some of my special moves!"

Feeling someone jump on her back, she let out a soft laugh as she realized who it was. "Hey Tess! I am. How about you? Did the herding go well?" She asked, knowing that she was working on joining the other herders. Her tail wagged eagerly behind her, a mere blur as she kept walking to the lake.

Making it to the lake, he barreled past Dawn as she stopped before the water. Bounding forward, he leapt into the water and began to swim across the lake. His head was the only thing above the water as he happily doggy paddled around. He loved the water and it showed as he swam back to shore, gave himself a quick shake, and then leapt back into the water once more.

Smiling happily at the news, Willow rolled over in the water and then grinned widely at Skye. "Good to hear! Tess is a good pup, and I'm sure if any sheep had got away, you would all have it so covered." At the sound of another dog joining their conversation, the golden dog laughed at Apollo's comment and shook her coat out, accidentally splashing both the other dogs. "Oops, sorry! And Apollo, I'm sure you have some very special moves. I'm not sure I'm made for herding though!" She rolled once more again in the lake, dripping wet and barking happily as she did it, tail wagging. "I'm happy in the water. I had a lovely nap too!"

Coming out of the tree line that bordered next to the lake, Hunter stepped into the sun and padded down towards the edge. He didn't mind water but preferred to keep his feet dry in general. Skirting around the pond, he paused for one moment and then took a quick drink, before moving across to where Apollo sat, talking to the other two dogs- Willow and Skye. Hunter had a soft spot for the talented female border collie, but, being a gentleman, he was hesitant to make any sort of move. In the meantime, he was just friendly and gallant, wherever he could be.

He lay down on the bank, next to Apollo and barked out softly. "Hi guys. How is it going?" He couldn't help it and smiled especially at the collie. "Hello Skye". He tried to ignore Willow's knowing grin.

Following her friend, Tess bounced, her tail wagging madly, tongue hanging out still. She had even more of a proud bounce when she answered the question. "I think I did REALLY well! Skye smiled at me and told me I did a good job, and the farmer did too!" When they reached the water, Tess grinned at her friend and then raced ahead as quick as she could, before taking a flying leap straight into the water, making a larger splash than seemed possible for the dogs size. Laughing and barking happily, she called out, "The waters great!" A thought occured to her, and she stopped for a moment, cocking her head, before looking around at the other dogs, searching. "Where's Eclipse?" Eclipse was their other young playmate.

"No doubt but it's nice to see her doing well. Master seemed very pleased with her as well." She said before turning to look over at the two males,"Hi Hunter. Keeping those pesky coyotes away?" She asked, figuring he had been been on guard duty.

Noticing how Hunter specifically said Skyes name, he rolled his eyes in amusement before laying on his side. "Why don't you go in the water Hunter?" He asked before whispering to him,"Might be able to get closer to Skye if you do. Never know when a dog like Atlas may steal her heart." Despite Atlas being a gentle giant, other dogs didn't mess with him because of his large size.

He bounded across the water over to Willow, enjoying the older females company. "Hey guys! What's up?" He asked as he gave himself a quick shake. "Did you hear the news? I heard the rancher talking and we might be getting a new dog. He was talking to a guy about buying one when we were out practice hunting."

Laughing internally at Hunter being such a puppy around his crush, the golden smiled and greeted the bouncing Labrador that was Dakota with a happy bark and a small splash in return. At the words though, her ears perked up, and she didn't even notice the wagging of her tail intensify just a bit. "Oh really? Did they say what sort of dog?" Willow liked when new dogs were added to her 'family', and they had not had it go wrong, with everyone fitting in great... for now, anyway.

Pretending like Apollo hadn't said anything to stir him up, the big grey dog couldn't help but feel the slightest hint of panic at the mention of Atlas. The dog truly was big, and not someone he would ever want to have to fight. He did, however, take the first word of advice from the other dog, and stepped into the water, moving closer to the Border Collie, but not too close- he didn't want to scare her. He let out a depreciating laugh at her question and gave as much of a shrug as was possible, being a dog. "There weren't any around to scare, but I suppose so, yes."
Hunter wasn't a dog to brag to others and didn't like being the centre of attention much at all. He quickly seized the opportunity to turn the conversation and looked attentively at Dakota as the news was announced.

Nodding, the little mix started bouncing in circles around her friend, barking and splashing the whole time. "Maybe. They look really hard though. I saw one somewhere once, I can't remember, and the sheep look really awkward, and you have to get them through gates and everything!" She cocked her head and then grinned her doggy grin again, taking one big leap and splashing water directly at April with a giggle, before stopping suddenly, looking across at all the adult dogs on the other side of the water, her head cocking in curiosity. "It would be good to get a ribbon thing though. What do you think they're all talking about?"

He chose to stay where he was, his fur liking to soak up water and retain it for a while. "Another one? Is the ranch expanding again? Our owner just bought another acre of land the other day." The ranch was growing bigger and bigger so more dogs would make sense.

Poppy woke up, blinking the sleep from her eyes, and she raised her body up. She tilted her head and sniffed the air, her noise finding a familiar sent, and she ran over to the nearest group which was Apollo, Willow and Hunter. "Hey guys!" She panted cheekily, her gaze sliding over the group.

Nathaniel's eyes scanned the ranch as he looked around for a group to join, and finally he saw Dakota and with a few others and he pushed his body into a jog until his presence joined there's, and he smiled. "Hey! What's up?" He said, his muscular body rippling.

"I just hope they are friendly if they come here."
